Phobias

What are your phobias, fs? I for one am scared of people in those giant mascot suits and heights. Anybody got anything weirder?

Sand/the desert. I have an irrational fear that I'll just fall through. It's all so...sandy and not solid seeming.

I'm afraid of sea monsters.

You know the giant eel in 'Shadow of the Colossus?' (If you don't, then: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK_2bzF4JjM) Scared the ever-loving crap out of me. It took me hours to defeat not because it was hard, but because I was so fucking terrified.

When I go to the beach, I can only swim so far past the shelf, because I start getting afraid that a monster is going to come up from the depths and grab me.

This is what I'm afraid of too when I get wigged out by deep water.

Dogs. I don't think it's that weird or unusual, but to hear some dog owners talk it's the most ridiculous phobia in the world. /bitter

Yeah...though I've found that pointing out that having had a dog lunge for your throat when you were 7 generally shuts them up - or at least makes them a little less dismissive as a whole [though, of course, ~their's would never~].

Robots with artificial intelligence. Nothing terrifies me more than something that is as smart as a human/smarter than a human, but with a body that is hard to kill. I think the terminator scarred me as a child LOL

The anon with a dog phobia

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
My phobia of dogs is fairly moderate -- as long as I'm not around a dog, I'm OK. I can talk about them, look at pictures of them, whatever. I just have difficulties when I'm near them.

However, my big, big, terrible phobia is that of vomiting. It, again, developed when I was too young to make sense of it (again, 2 or 3, from gastroenteritis). I can't even talk about the subject without getting uneasy, even bursting into tears sometimes. I've never been on a rollercoaster because of it, and I also avoid drinking too much because of it.

Spiders, which is pretty standard. And for a weird one zombies, specifically the old-school shuffley groaning zombies, don't know what it is about them but they freak me the fuck out.

I'm also wigged out by water I can't see the bottom of.

Eyes! Especially eyeballs outside heads (THE FIRE GANG FROM LABYRINTH, YOU GUYS) and injury to eyes. Nope nope nope nope.

Oh, and on a somewhat related note, I'm incredibly anxious of losing my glasses. Not so much actually losing my SIGHT, just that I've worn them since I was around 7 years old so they are part of my "body". I need them to function.

Snakes. I can't even look at a picture of snakes without shaking, and if someone tries to make me touch one? I run away - literally.

Pregnancy and childbirth. That's my big one. I can't even talk about it without shuddering or crying.

Losing my mind, like with dementia.

And I'm also a trypophobe. But it's only small, organic holes. Like, looking at the end of a handful or straws is fine, but lotus pods make me feel like bugs are crawling on me.

I actually had phobias as a teenager which genuinely got in the way of life.

Fortunately I got over them, mostly.

I all started with a phobia of failure, which then escalated into a school phobia, which later started to escalate into agoraphobia (but fortunately I never fully went there). I did prevent me from going to a normal school, though.

Not really exotic as far as phobias go, though!

Pregnancy/childbirth (tokophobia), spiders (arachnophobia), talking on the phone (telephone phobia), and developing a severe mental illness (maniaphobia).

Re: Phobias

I think I have mild claustrophobia or stenophobia. Now, this isn't actually something that's ever affected me in real life, it's more of a hypothetical. I don't have trouble with small rooms or enclosed spaces in general. I just really, really hate narrow passages.

For example, any of those caving movies or stories where people have to squeeze through passages not much larger than they are? Creeps me out. Same thing applies even to narrow hallways that you'd have to turn a bit sideways to go down. The idea makes me uneasy.

Also, as a child, drop-offs in bodies of water creeped me out. There was just something generally scary about not being able to see the bottom, even though there was no fear of any particular thing being down there.

Crickets. Also spiders, but not tarantulas or daddy long-legs--anything that has long chitinous segmented legs, especially if it moves in that 'motionless--slow creep--SUDDEN SPRING OF MOVEMENT' pattern. Uuuuuggggghhhhh.

Deep water. I HATE deep water. I will never swim in one of those super-deep diving pools and just pictures showing water depth scares the crap out of me. No no no no no no.
