Time to vent!

[personal profile] queerwolf 2013-09-02 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna start with some grammar stuff.

English is a sucky language full of tricky homonyms, I know. But I'm tired of seeing these mixed up constantly in fic.

First: taut/taunt/taught

taut means tightly drawn or tense, as in muscles or nerves

taught is the past tense of teach

taunt means to make fun of someone/ridicule. Can be a noun or verb.

Second: peak/peek/pique

peak is the top of a mountain, the most important point or level of something or the maximum point, level or volume of anything

peek means to look or glance quickly or furtively. Can be a noun or verb.

pique means to arouse an emotion or provoke an action, to excite interest or curiosity or to wound as in pride or vanity

Third:

bear means the animal, to carry/support, to bring forth/give birth to, to hold up under/be capable of

bare means naked, uncovered, undisguised, unadorned, plain

I mostly try not to care about this kind of thing, but I have to admit, when I see someone confusing "lose" and "loose", the red mists descend.

They don't even sound similar, for fuck's sake!

NAYRT

for me, the confusion comes from the fact the the O in lose sounds like OO

Like it's not pronounced L(oh)se it's pronounced L(ooh)se

"Intact" means whole or entire, and is a single word. If "in tact" means anything (and I'm not convinced that it does), it means in a state of being tactful or politic.

lead/led: the past tense of 'leading' is NOT lead, it's led. 'Lead' is only pronounced the same as 'led' when you're referring to the chemical (and not 'leading' with the former.

Yeah, it's a set of different rules than 'read' but yay for English's many inconsistencies.

Please give me some juicy general comments, people, to sink my letter-shaped teeth in. Wank even. Anything!

Thank you! Sheesh! I know people write fanfic for fun, but having a grasp of the actual language is important, if only for the sake of your readers' blood pressure.

Along the same lines:

"I's" is *never* the possessive form of I. That's "my".

"It's" is short for "it is" or "it has". The possessive form of "it" is "its" (no apostrophe).

Lots of grammar things irk me. Some I can understand at least a little. One that bothers me a lot, though, is "weary" when people mean to say "wary". Why do they do that? They don't sound alike and they mean nothing even close to the same thing. I've even seen it done by people whose first language is English!

Am I the only person who actually means it when I say I have religious beliefs and am open to all ideas, not just all ideas that mirror mine perfectly? I hate thinking I'm about to have open, honest dialogue and realize five sentences later I'm practically being unofficially Baptized.

Well, if you're going to be picky, none of these are grammar errors, they're word choice errors.

'Alot.' There's no such word. It's 'a lot.' (Or 'allot,' if you're talking about apportioning something.)

I am getting irrationally angry over people treating brackets and parentheses as if they are interchangeable. They serve distinct grammatical purposes, people! Brackets set apart or interject; parentheses explain or qualify.

I would write:

I'm feeling crappy (getting over the flu).

NOT

I'm feeling crappy [getting over the flu].

On the same token, I would write:

In his paper, he explains that he has "spent time with the Irakois [sic]..."

NOT

In his paper, he explains that he has "spent time with the Irakois (sic)..."

She quaffed her hair.

And we you make an angry face with teeth exposed, you are BARING your teeth. Not bearing them.

That's one of my headbangers. Along with "could of" instead of "could have".

epithet vs. epitaph

(Anonymous) 2013-09-03 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Not the same thing, people! Get it right!

The folks on the freaking nightly news get this wrong. "He was heard shouting racial epitaphs..." Really? He was shouting racist gravestone inscriptions?

Re: Time to vent!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-03 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
As an ESL, I drives me insane that Americans apparently have done away with quite a lot of irregular verbs. In school, we got drilled to never get one wrong and then recently, I was watching Green Lantern. And the last damn lines were "Of all the Lantern's who have ever worn the ring, there was one who's light shined brightest."

Shined? Come on!

(Yes I know it's the preferred version today but when you spent a lot of time memorising those things, it's kind of jarring.)

Oh, and you pore over books--you don't "pour" over them, unless you're at Hogwarts and you accidentally Transfigured yourself into a raincloud.

My favorite of all time: the self-described ~grammar Nazi who out of the clear blue sky proclaimed "It's case AND point, not case IN point! Get it right, you morons!" (It actually is "case IN point," jsyk. I love it when people like that get it dead wrong.)
