Very much so. Your sister is adorable, OP. (And her ending is awesome.)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That's some Princess Bride realness there, good for your sister. I never understood why being depressing automatically gives a book a leg up on the competetion, my kingdom for a Newberry Award winner actually having a fully happy ending.

Shiloh.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of the more recent Newberys have happy endings. Holes, The One and Only Ivan, and Criss Cross all come to mind.

But it does seem to be the depressing ones that get more attention in schools. I cannot imagine why anyone thought Out of the Dust was an awesome book to give to children.

I like your sister's ending better, too.

Did she also tell you Old Yeller lives?

Shhh!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck you. Old Yeller DOES live. On a Farm. With lots of chickens to chase and a family who loves him and wouldn't put him down because of a silly thing like rabies.

That's a really great ending.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That is really adorable. And a great ending, imo.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That is adorable and I want fic of that ending

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
We'll always have fanfiction. :P

But seriously...I like that ending too, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I don't find this cute at all? The alternate ending is, but not the situation. If you were too young to handle it, she should've picked a different book altogether. It's not like that was the only dark part of the book anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Welp, I'm in the minority but I don't think this is sweet. It's pathetic. If you were too young to handle an ending of that nature, your sister should have picked something age appropriate.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of baffled that you'd call something like that pathetic but then I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
OP doesn't say how old their sister was then (or exactly how old they were, for that matter). If sister was a young teen, I wouldn't expect her to necessarily be as concerned about age appropriateness as about wanting to share a story she loved, with a thoughtful edit for her sibling.

When I was little, my parents and I always watched The Sound of Music up until the wedding and then my mom said 'the end.' I didn't see the second part for several years, but I'm happy I got to enjoy the first part during that time instead of waiting until the entire movie was 'age appropriate.' Different things are right for different people (and different kids) but I would hardly call OP's story "pathetic."

Secret 3 - Spoilers for The Great Gatsby?

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-07 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
spoilers for The Great Gatsby?

[Picture are Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio playing Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby from the movie "The Great Gatsby". They are both men with light skin and short brown hair wearing suits with other similarly well-dressed people behind them. They are looking attentively at something off-screen and in front of them, while Carraway is smiling a little.]

Not secret: When I was little, my older sister read this book to me but, because I was so young, changed the ending. In her version, Gatsby is shot but doesn't die and these two end up traveling the world together while Gatsby's body, heart and mind recover, and he learns what real love is through friendship, etc. I didn't realize until I was much older that that isn't what actually happened.

Secret: I hate the original. Despite it with a passion of a thousand suns. I can't help but feel like the 'message/lesson' behind the original is cheap in comparison to my sister's version.

Secret because: Obvious reasons, etc.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Add me to the list of people who would read the hell out of that.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
This is a cute secret though like others I don't get the point of your sister doing that... but yeah, I don't know the whole story so whatever. Thing is if you think that the book's message is cheap and hollow just because it doesn't contain something lofty about healing through friendship you have missed the whole point of the book. I say this as someone who doesn't even like the book.

Um, well it's not 'friendship' but you might like this fix it which is exactly the same principle as your sister's only with a romantic relationship: http://archiveofourown.org/works/806687
