I would've understood your sentiments, OP, if there was any indication at all that it made him uncomfortable or that he was in any way not OK with it. As it is, well? It is Victorian England? Nobody knows what informed consent is.

I see where you are coming from, but I cannot help thinking that you judge actions of a character who belongs in a different epoch by employing modern ethics, and that's where the problem lies.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
if that's the case, why did everyone here say lucretia from spartacus was a rapist for having sex with her husband's gladiator?
dreemyweird: (austere)

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2013-09-06 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
...probably because they're committing the same mistake as the OP

But then I'm not overly familiar with this particular canon source, so there may be other, more valid reasons. Perhaps the gladiator in question seemed to mind at some point.

Because F!S is full of stupid and incoherent SJWs.

I think it's indeed relevant that this incarnation of Sherlock doesn't mind the situation at all. And one might even argue Irene is enough of a judge of character to know he isn't. Which are all factors that lead towards me not interpreting this scene as rapey.

This reason sucks, because we are not talking about an historical accurate movie. Do not pick your beans only when you want them.

The real reason would be the "Women can´t rape men, because men always want to have the sex, especially with a pretty lady. When a woman molest a man it is totally funny!" - trope

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Women can't rape men. Men are the perpetrators of rape and women are the victims.

In the beginning when I saw such sentiments expressed I had to laugh, because nobody could be that morally off-center, right? Right?

Yeah, nowadays I'm just torn between sobbing and rolling my eyes.

(yeah yeah, probably troll or sarcastic.. still it gets so tiring)

AIRT could probably learn to make funnier jokes or make their sarcasm a little clearer considering the nature of the Internet, BUT still...am I really the only one who assumed sarcasm first, misogynist troll second?

Secret 12 - Sherlock Holmes 2009 (warning for sexual violence)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-06 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
warning for sexual violence

[Picture is Robert Downey Junior as Sherlock Holmes from the 2009 movie of the same name. He is naked, lying back over pillows with his legs crossed at the ankles, and presumably tied from the wrists to bedposts on a bed and with a cushion covering his crotch.]

I'm not a rape or sexual assault victim, I'm also not the kind of person who thinks everything is advocating rape culture (not that rape culture isn't bad).

But the fact that Irene explicitly drugged him, made out with him and at the very least tied him up and took all of his clothes off still makes me really uncomfortable.

Double standards ahoy!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
You have every right to feel uncomfortable, OP.
kelincihutan: (Default)

[personal profile] kelincihutan 2013-09-07 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Why is it hypocritical to say that something feels rapey/non-consentualish to you but you don't think that absolutely everything is rapey? If everything is rape, then nothing is and the attempt to critique anything (like, say, this scene for example) as uniquely or specifically problematic becomes impossible and pointless.

I just don't understand the "double-standards" comment here at all. Especially since, while this scene never made me uncomfortable, you make a lot of good points OP.

You are allowed to feel uncomfortable about rape without being a victim of it

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-09-07 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
For years this problem has never come up, and now I'm saying that sentiment for the third time in like a month. WTF is going on? Is this some new trend of some kind? Why is it lately I've been seeing people say they've never been raped and yet are really nervous about rape culture like it's something to be ashamed of? Do I just have weird friends or something?

Anyway, OP, you have a very valid point. And you don't need to think everything is rape culture to have that point. As the person above me pointed out, if everything is rape culture, then eventually nothing really is and critiquing it would be impossible. You're allowed to not see rape culture everywhere but see rapey undertones here.

Re: You are allowed to feel uncomfortable about rape without being a victim of it

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
OP: Well the main reason ehy this makes me so uncomfortable is that if the genders were reversed, there would DEFINITELY be a huge outrage (at the very least, by the SJWs) But I have heard literally NOTHING about this situation. I just wanted to clarify that I'm not one of those really oversensitive people who thinks everything is rape culture, but yeah, I have a good friend (who's a guy) who has been sexually assaulted, so I've seen firsthand all of the fucked up bullshit that male rape victims have to go through.
