Sad but true. People don't just stop being who they are because they have a pseudonym on the internet; spend enough time around a fandom, get to know the people in it, and their flaws will start to become apparent.

I would also venture to suggest that some people only show certain sides of themselves online because of the thin veil of anonymity and/or that side is only brought out by their fandom interests.

I know I show a hell of a lot more of my cynical side online, because I get into discussions about things that I have developed a strong cynical reaction to.

Fandom would be everything you said if there weren't people in it. Butttt....

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
haha butt

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. The shit behavior you see IRL is the same shit behavior you see in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The most you can hope for is the usual caliber of shitty people, but with similar interests.

Secret 4 - General fandom

[Picture is a sandglass.]

I used to think fandom was a magical place where imagination ruled and everything was fun and games. As I get older I realise; it's all the same people as real life, acting the same way they ever did, merely hiding under different labels and rationalizations. Maybe younger me didn't notice before because I came in with the pre-conception that fandom isn't real life. Except it turns out it's all the same.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2013-09-09 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah'yup. The older I got, the more I realized fandom was not much different from other social groups /structures out there. The only difference it was related to stuff I and like-minded people were into.

It was kinda sobering when I realized that, ngl. (But I've slowly learned to adapt)

Fandom can be magical, but there's definitely an underbelly to it that can be vicious.

that is a really good way of describing it. Unfortunately, even though fandom can be a wonderful place, there's always something nasty trying to crawl up through the sewers to muck it up.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think that pretty much describes everything in life.

...Meanwhile it took getting to the comments for me to realize I'd somehow missed the negative tone of the secret; I think I fixated on the hourglass and connected this to "anyone can be in fandom, even adults! it's not just for kids until they have to join the 'real world'"

I clearly have rose-colored glasses on today.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Did I submit this in my sleep?

Seriously though when I was young and lonely fandom was a magical place full of outsiders who "understood me" to me. I wished fanfiction .net was a school that I could go to so I wouldn't be the outsider.

But then I grew up and left high school , went to college, worked for awhile. Just generally grew up and discovered high school was not the world. Then when I looked at the fandom community, I realized that they were just like the high school experience I hated.

People starting drama, picking on each other for dumb shit, frustration and petty jerks.

(Though I wouldn't mind going to a writer school. Just not for the reasons I wanted to before. The student body wouldn't be a walk through a daisy field but writing is fucking fascinating and I can churn out a mini essay in three hours tops. )

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to school for writing right now and I love it, but the majority of writing students are really pretentious and annoying.

This is why I have a "fandom is real life" tag on my tumblr. The two overlap with alarming frequency.

I agree.
Maybe I'm bitter but since I lost the rose-tinted glasses everything looks like shit. Sometimes I even need to take vacations from my fandoms because what happens online stresses me out more than my "real life". Especially fandom friends. I've never had that much drama with my "real life" friends.

Aw. Well, it happens to us all at some point. Would you like a party that now that you've joined the club? (I'm not being sarcastic. I'm trying to be welcoming. I am bad at this, I know.)

The good news is that this realization doesn't have to ruin fandom. It just means you have to navigate it the same way you do real life in order to have fun.
