Using any sexuality to describe a character is major backbutton for me.

This. For me anyways. Maybe sex and sexual attraction is just an abnormally low priority for me, but I just think it's unhealthy to center a huge amount of your identity around it.

I identify as gay, but if someone asked me to describe who I was that would not even be in the top five things I would say about myself. It's not the most important thing about me.

Most people don't put their sexuality in the top five things they would use to describe themselves.

I identify as asexual, which I fully admit may be my problem empathizing with this. I understand that sex is important, and that socially who you have sex with is important, I just have a very very hard time understanding why and understanding why it's so important to some people.

I feel the exact same way, so I don't think it's because you're asexual. Unless I'm wondering if they want to have sex with me personally, I don't know why it's important.

I couldn't agree more. Sex is not the central tenet of most people's personalities or daily lives.

I don't identify as anything? I mostly date dudes, but I have a way harder time defining "dating" than most people do, so who really knows.

People end up hyperaware of their own sexuality because that's what others around them are forever noticing, criticizing, and trying to make them feel bad about. Sometimes people choose to take extra pride in, and therefore have extra focus on, their sexuality just to fend off everyone else's insistence that they be ashamed of it and hide it away for whatever reason.

Sometimes it's a big part of the character, though.
For example when the char is in a homophobic environment.

Or are you simply referring to basic descriptions in text like: "Lana went to get a coffee. She was a tall, bisexual brunette and she was wearing a red dress"? Because that kind of shit is always a backbutton to me, no matter if the sexuality is named or not ;)

The latter or when the sexuality is made to be a huge deal when it has little bearing on the story at hand.

The first makes total sense.

It's "show not tell" for me. It usually reeks of sub-par writing, but it does depend on the way it's mentioned. By another character? Or is it in the narrative when the narrative is supposed to be omniscient or focused on one character who wouldn't think/care/understand sexuality? Those matter, too.

Circumstancial stuff for me I guess. But usually I don't need to see it in writing. And some medieval fantasy character probably will never have heard of "demisexual" so that would throw me to heh kingdom come. -_-

seriously, just let my ship make out you don't have to define their sexuality for me, unless the characters want to define it for themselves
