I'm not quite this bad, but sometimes someone I love/respect will say something offensive and I'm just totally shocked. I'm so used to being in spaces where homophobes/sexists/racists etc. are ripped apart, that I always have this moment of utter shock when someone who is otherwise decent will say something completely ignorant that I kind of didn't realise people still actually say and I just stare at them, speechless.

And it's definitely because of the internet, because I used to say the same bigoted, fucked-up shit before I got immersed in circles that discussed feminism, sexuality and race.

I have this problem too, as a consequence of too little RL interaction in the past few months.
Someone called Mily Cyrus a "dirty slut" in conversation and I was so shocked I couldn't help my "what? NO!". Not my best moment.

I guess I fail to see why that's bad? I mean, if you got hugely huffy about it, maybe, but shoot, what's wrong with saying, even out in the world, "Wow, that was kind of a lousy thing to say. How do you feel about Thicke's rape song?"

THANK YOU. I think the environment of fandom has made me a lot more sensitive to the way people are IRL but that doesn't mean fandom is always too sensitive, it means that people can be ignorant dicks. Oh, it would be lovely to revert back to my pre-feminist stupidity, I would probably have less anxiety attacks, it's not like it's FUN to know any better, but we're never going to evolve as a society if people are only called out on that stuff on the internet.

Ayrt

Yeah I would say hugely huffy would describe it. I'd had a cocktail and the person in question was someone who isn't worth the effort. He's a childhood friend of my partner who we were struggling to deal with already, and if I was going to convince him, a tipsy indignant rant was not going to work.

This whole thread is giving me a great perspective on the incident actually...

Same. Even though I am now vastly more aware of the ignorant and hurtful shit people say on a daily basis, I am thankful for what I learned since now I can work on being part of the solution and not the problem.

I have this problem every time I go home for the holidays. I love my family, but wow am I realizing they are not the most PC people in the world :|

Yes, this. I was by chance present in a reunion where a politician of certain relevance started speaking by saying "Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen. Oh, and faggots too, we have to be inclusive." And then everybody in the room laughed (or so it seemed to me), while I just sat there, shocked. Because this is an acceptable joke in a society where machismo is prevalent, even people I respect and trust though it funny or at least didn't seem to find it offensive.

None of this is a bad thing, in my opinion.
