Not being popular isn't the same as being oppressed.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What I'm curious about is there are more than a few fandoms where het shipping isn't what you'd call popular. So either OP is very inexperienced or they actually believe this fandom is doing something new and different. ...Or they're trolling, who knows.

I think many words are being overused in a way that slowly makes them lose their initial meaning. I see "oppression" or "discrimination" everywhere as soon as one interest is not as prevalent as others. It's pretty annoying.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Sigh. I've been avoiding getting into this fandom for a lot of reasons (spoilers mainly) and this is not making me any more likely to join. I can see why people would be really into the femslash because there are more options than in your average shounen show, but I'm surprised there wouldn't be much in the way of het as well. Oh well. /ships weird het pairings in the show

"Oppress" was probably not the right choice of word here. At all.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
My guess is that a more accurate description would be "excludes" or "ignores". Then again, there are many fandoms that could be described as largely ignoring het shippers, so maybe not. Tell me, OP, what raises this to the level of oppression? Are you chased out of the fandom by mobs with torches and pitchforks? Constantly written off as... I don't even know. I'm having trouble coming up with a plausible mechanism even assuming your description is accurate. Details, OP!

So where does all the cute fanart of that pairing come from that a friend of mine (and fan of that ship) keeps reblogging? It must be ~*~*magic*~*~ !!

(Poor oppressed het shippers boohoo)

Not getting your own way all the time is not the same as oppression.

I'm not in the SNK fandom, but what you just described isn't oppression. Good try, tho.

Not in SNK fandom, but I've seen Connie/Sasha on my dash quite a few times, so I'm really doubting that het shipping is nonexistent.

In any case, I think it's a good thing that a femslash pairing is so popular when femslash is usually so ignored. From what I've seen in most anime fandoms, there's usually a juggernaut slash pairing and also a pretty popular het pairing. From what I've seen, Ymir/Christa is very popular. In fact, it has appeared on my dash more than Eren/Levi (is that the most popular slash pairing for the show? idk)

But Mikasa/Eren, Misaka/Levi, Annie/Eren, Annie/Armin, Mikasa/Eren/Armin, Hanji/Levi, Petra/Levi and other het pairings have a decent following- Maybe not as big as the most popular slash ship, but it's not like they're hated or something :/

Secret 3 - Shipping, Shingeki no Kyojin, Attack on Titan

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-14 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is two blond and pale skinned people in uniforms from the manga/anime "Shingeki no Kyojin" or "Attack on Titan". One of them is a man and the other presumably a woman. The man is blushing as he carries the other person, who is kissing him on the cheek and also blushing.]

This is the only fandom I've been in that oppresses het shippers. All I find with these characters is femslash and slash. Where is the love?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
first time i hear someone complain about a surplus of femslash

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, it's not often that I use the term "delusional" in a fandom setting, but...

Like, yeah, sure, Eren/Armin, Eren/Levi, and Ymir/Christa are probably the most popular pairings but there's plenty of het. Hell, I have a bit of a crackship in Eren/Petra and I find stuff for that sometimes.

Unless you're talking exclusively about Reiner/Christa you're out of your mind. And even then you're out of your mind.

Wait. WAIT! OP is Reiner!

Reiner, pls. Christa just isn't that into you.

Het isn't even unpopular, though. Eren/Mikasa and Levi/Hanji have pretty big followings, for example. If you're talking about Reiner/Krista, well, she has something going on with Ymir, so that's a bit more difficult.

Kinda off-topic, but can anyone explain how Ymir/Bert came about in the Japanese fandom? I see a lot of it on Pixiv and it's quite baffling tbh. Is it some kind of symmetrical pairing thing with Reiner/Krista?

I agree that 'oppress' might be the wrong word, but I definitely notice that het ships are not given any love. It sucks but it's not unique to SnK. If you've been in more shonen fandoms you'll notice they tend to be completely overrun by fujioshi who only care about slash.

I am glad that femslash is getting good attention in SnK fandom since they rarely get any love in shonen fandoms typically overrun by slash fangirls. But yeah, I wish het fandom was bigger for this series.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Lol good. Hope it stays that way.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
...If you're talking exclusively Reiner/Christa, I think your problem is in the ship itself. What with Reiner saying 'I didn't think I looked like the sort of guy who was interested in women' and Christa pledging to support Ymir literally no matter what (in a manner that would definitely be taken as romantic if one of the people involved was a dude), you picked some pretty gay characters to ship in a hetero relationship. That's the reason why there's not a lot of love for them.

If you're talking 'het in general' there's definitely stuff out there, don't worry

So because this one show I like has inspired tons of het and femmeslash fics, but almost zero slash fics, I'm oppressed?

Do I get to join the Oppression Olympics now? Are there uniforms? Do I get to wave a flag?

Oppression? LOL no.

It's just a fact that in most fandoms the slash ships and shippers tend to be louder and outnumber the het shippers. But it doesn't mean that het shipping isn't there.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
TBH this is one of the few fandoms where I find it easy to find, slash, femmslash and het pairings. And that is a beautiful thing.
