I mostly agree. If you're a grown person who can't prepare a simple meal for yourself, or sew up a hem or reattach a button in a kind of 'emergency' situation, then you really need to work on your life skills. (Everybody should know how to do laundry, clean a toilet, pump gas, etc., but omg, the people who don't....)

However, i never 'mend jeans', because sewing through denim is pretty much impossible by hand, and i don't have a sewing machine. I take jeans that need a patch to my local dry cleaners, and they fix them for about three bucks.

You need a special attachment to sew through denim and it's still pretty difficult to work with unless you're using an industrial sewing machine. I definitely agree mending denim is not one of those must have skills.

IA. Tossing a perf. good pair of jeans that can be patched for a few dollars (yeah my drycleaner knows me real well), or at worst-case scenario, repurposed as camping clothes/gear, then spending upwards of $50 on another pair is pretty ridic, IMO.

...Do people who don't drive need to know how to pump gas? Not ragging on you, just curious about exceptions to rules and stuff. :P

(Not saying I couldn't, because it seems straightforward enough. I just... Never needed to do it.)

It's a useful thing if you're going to help someone, but if you don't drive, i don't imagine you'd *need* to know. But it's one of those things i'd *want* to know, just because it's such a common thing, you know?

99% of pumps have instructions on them now.

different person here but personally, I define skills as a 'will this save me in a zombie apocalypse scenario' like I don't have the muscle dexterity to drive stick safely but I still learnt 'how to do it' because I am afraid of being in a doomsday scenario and only finding a stick shift and dying so lol

but I mean gas is pretty self explanatory I think so long as you have basic familiarity with the pump and have ridden in cars and been to gas stations before. it's the 'hitting the desired amount on the penny' that has a trick to it, but for some people it's still a natural thing.

If your eyesight is fairly good, buy smaller needles. It's easier to get a thinner, sharper needle through denim. I use size 9 or 10 quilting needles. A thimble (to push the needle with) also helps a great deal, no matter what you're sewing.

My SO uses a kind of saddle-shaped stool at his work (he's a tattoo artist), so the inside thighs/crotch area of his jeans wear out. It's a million times faster and easier for the dry cleaners to patch it. They do this oversew of the patch with a zig-zag stitch, makes it very strong.
