Re: It's that time again (non-fandom confessions)

I look down on grown men who can't cook and/or do a simple things like mend a pair of jeans or re-sew a popped off button.

To me these aren't "girly" things but needed life skills. If you can't take care of yourself but you need a woman around to do these things for you, you aren't an adult but a fucking child.

I also look down on their parents even worse. You should have taught him better.

/had a few male friends like this
//taught them how to cook and sew because I found it pathetic that they didn't know how already

I agree about cooking, but not about sewing.

I'm a grown woman and my sewing skills pretty much extend to pillows and pillowcases. With a sewing machine. I'm just not very dexterous (never really got the hang of crafts, even 'simple' origiami). And I'm not going to die because I can't replace a button.

I will add however, that I feel this way about people who can't their own laundry. No matter what gender.

Nobody's asking you to create an outfit from scratch. But a button? If you don't know how to re-attach a button, it's a wonder you know how to fasten a button in the first place. It is literally that simple.

My mother never sews. I guess she's not a grown up, either.

You can't even resew a button? It's not that hard. There are dozen of videos on youtube alone that show you how.

Who has to mend jeans or sew things.

Part of being a grown ass man is the money to do those things being less valuable than the time.

okay I know how to sew on a button but why the hell would I "mend jeans"? people wear jeans with holes in them and nobody looks twice.

I look down on grown PEOPLE, from every gender, who can't do a simple fried eggs/boiled potatoes combo to feed themselves if in need, and can't fix a button.

We ain't talking about Cordon Bleu cuisine here, or making AMAZING COSPLAYS with the sewing machine. It's about being able to take care of yourself :/ And the people on this thread that are like "Naaaaaaah, I just buy another shirt/pants if I pop a button" baffle me. The culture of throwing stuff away instead of fixing it is completely alien for me. Please tell me not everyone in First World countries is like that O.o

Re: It's that time again (non-fandom confessions)

Agreed. They're called basic life skills for a reason, and they're kind of required. :/

fried eggs and TOAST you mean. boiled potatoes are disgusting.

I can cook a lot of different kinds of eggs pretty well, but for some bizarre reason, I can never remember how to make scrambled eggs. It's like the dumbest thing in the world to forget!

fried egg/boiled potatoes is a thing? Like, do you put the fried egg on the potato or???

I mostly agree. If you're a grown person who can't prepare a simple meal for yourself, or sew up a hem or reattach a button in a kind of 'emergency' situation, then you really need to work on your life skills. (Everybody should know how to do laundry, clean a toilet, pump gas, etc., but omg, the people who don't....)

However, i never 'mend jeans', because sewing through denim is pretty much impossible by hand, and i don't have a sewing machine. I take jeans that need a patch to my local dry cleaners, and they fix them for about three bucks.

Re: It's that time again (non-fandom confessions)

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-09-14 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You need a special attachment to sew through denim and it's still pretty difficult to work with unless you're using an industrial sewing machine. I definitely agree mending denim is not one of those must have skills.

...Do people who don't drive need to know how to pump gas? Not ragging on you, just curious about exceptions to rules and stuff. :P

(Not saying I couldn't, because it seems straightforward enough. I just... Never needed to do it.)

How do you feel about women who lack these skills?

Just to really blow your mind, I'm a woman and I suck at cooking and have no clue how to sew - I screwed up fixing a button on my pants. I just...fail at sewing. My husband takes care of all that. He's genius at sewing and mending and cooking, while I take care of the accounts and a lot of the house stuff (we share the yardwork).

I don't care about assigned gender roles, but I don't think it's a bad thing to have someone around that can help you out with things that you fail at, and in return you help them out with their fail topics. It's a partnership, afterall.

Re: It's that time again (non-fandom confessions)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I feel that way, too. I could at least boil water and was sewing up minor tears in my clothes when I was in grade school. Of course, supplies were in the house for me to learn with, so I imagine I would have been boned if my guardian hadn't been able to do shit, either. But if adults around you could sew and cook and clean for you and you've ever observed them doing it, and you're still mystified by laundry and cooking instructions by the time you hit adulthood (and you're mentally and physically capable of comprehending these things, of course) then I really don't know what the hell happened. Hell, you don't even need the parent if you have decent internet access, Google, people!

Re: It's that time again (non-fandom confessions)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, but I feel the same way about women who never learn these basic life skills. I make allowances for differences in lifestyle, of course re: things like car maintenance, child care, etc., but everyone wears clothes and eats food, so basic cooking and cleaning skills are a must.

I also look down on people who can't judge when they should go to a professional and when they should just DIY, so they hire a professional for every little thing. I get that some things just aren't worth your time, even if you can do them yourself, and one perk of having plenty of money is being able to outsource stuff you don't feel like doing, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about people like my friend who thought she wasn't heating healthy enough so she up and made an appointment to consult with a nutritionist. She had no specific dietary issues and wasn't told to go by her doctor. I applaud her desire to improve her diet, but I would have started with Google and the library and then, if I still had questions, moved on to talking to my doctor during my next regular checkup before I ever walked into a nutritionist's office. Then there's my co-workers who make fun of me for doing my own tax returns and keep insisting I'd save so much money if I got a professional to do it. My taxes are incredibly simple and the one time I did go to a tax preparer, she really didn't do anything different than I'd been doing already. Also, the fee was in no way worth the time savings. It only takes me about half an hour to do my taxes once I have all of the documents assembled. Unless you are going to do my taxes for, like, $10, it is not worth it.

I kind of agree. It used to be considered manly to be able to do those things, in fact. I was in (Boy) Scouts, and there were badges for sewing and cooking, and we all had to learn how to sew patches onto our sashes at the very least.

Now if I get a tiny hole in a favourite shirt or lose a button off a favourite pair of jeans? I don't have to wastefully get rid of it and spend hard cash (that I could be using on entertainments, investments, etc.) on new clothing. I can mend it. And it takes all of five minutes (or less) so the "better things to do with my time" arguments come from people who not only don't know how to do this shit, but don't even know anything about doing this shit. "I have the money to make other people do it for me, and choose to squander that money rather than do it myself and save that money for the future/things I enjoy" is hardly the epitome of rational masculinity. It's rather the opposite.

I can't sew for shit, so no. I can't do those either. And I'm no "master chef." I throw shit into pot and hit the stove buttons.

And I'm a girl. Gonna judge me, too? Or is it ONLY the males? Cause oh no!! How dare a guy not learn that!! *rolls eyes*

Everyone learns what they want to learn, regardless of gender. You;re being rather unfair.

And from my experience, males tend to learn that on their own when they no longer have parents around to feed them. Same goes for us women.
