Do/did your parents know you were involved in fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
And how did they react to it?

Re: Do/did your parents know you were involved in fandom

I don't think my parents even know what that would mean outside of stuff like conventions.

My mother died before I got involved in fandom myself, but she was kind of peripherally involved in it herself. She had some LOTR fan publications from the mid-1970s, and she made up Narnia fanfics to keep us entertained on roadtrips.

*cough*

If it wasn't for my Dad's love of ST:TOS, I probably wouldn't love fandom as much as I do.

Christ, no.

I've hidden fandom from my parents since I was... eleven? They wouldn't get it. They'd give me shit about it. If they knew I wrote lesbian smut about that TV show that they're already uncomfortable about me liking they'd stress out.

As far as I'm concerned fandom is necessarily a thing that I keep absolutely secret in real life. I'm not ashamed of fandom, but I'd be shamed for it without a doubt.

They're okay with it, tho my mom isn't fond of fanfiction. She told me once that it was because it changed me.

I was like "no way. 13 years of consistent bullying is what 'changed me'. Fanfiction is what gave me a feeling that I was worth something."

But that was just "an excuse".

They know I've gone to a few conventions and really like certain things.

They're pretty neutral about it, really. They don't really give me trouble about it, but they're not interested it either.

I was in high school and we shared a computer, so I kind of had to tell them. They were fine with it. My Mom even gave me advice when I had a crush on a male online friend. (Who ended up being a jerk and ignoring my IMs for no reason. Go figure. I wonder if he ever thinks about me.)

They see it as the time I'm out for 3 days at a convention. I don't think they realize it's a good portion of what I do on the computer.

Also one time I was collecting writing pieces and my mom says, "Are you going to share your fanfiction?" and I was so shocked I still don't know how she learned about it and what she knows.

They have no idea.

Unless you count that one time when I let them read a humorous fic I wrote (because they kept asking to see some of my writing), and told them it was a parody so I wouldn't have to explain fanfiction. Technically I wasn't lying.

My parents don't care about any interest that don't stem from their own or their involvement on my behalf in something. None of them have ever asked and I get laughed at when I offer an opinion, so I've given up trying. Don't talk to any of them much at all more actually. Getting talked to, but not listened to, so what's the point?

I have mentioned that I write fanfiction. I do not give them my fannish screen name. ;)

It's really sort of too bad that I write anything and everything, including kinky porn, because I suspect my dad would enjoy some of the stuff I've written for Star Trek.

I just bought a FiM tank and my 23rd Monster High doll. They know and don't care.

Yeah, I used to talk about it a lot and I still make references to fandom stuff.

My dad doesn't care, my mom wants to know why I haven't published my fanfic and become a billionaire yet.

Dad has literally an entire bookcase dedicated Perry Rhodan, and growing up I was always watching bad sci-fi with him, and playing Hexen and Doom when he'd get some mates round to lan it.

Mother reads fanfiction, dressed up twice for Harry Potter launches, and my little sister middlename comes from young adult novel (about wizards and etc). Oh and has talked with my brother about the methods of rationality in public (I can never stop cringing).

Both of those just being very brief touches upon their fannishness (they've both gone to the Rocky Horror picture show multiple times etc).

If anything it's pretty amazing I'm not substantial more of a maladjusted otaku then I am, but they've obviously always had no issue with it.

Not really? In middle school they knew I had some penpals from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer board on AOL (lol the 90s) but that was about it. I'm pretty sure they have no idea what fanfiction is or that I've been writing it since I was 11.

My parents have no idea what fandom is but they're very aware of my interests (gaming, tv, etc) and know I spend time exploring them and whatnot. My mother knows I read fan written stories about certain tv shows or movies but doesn't understand what exactly they consist of. (As far as I'm concerned, it can stay that way forever.)

Kind of? I don't think they really get the full extent though I've vaguely tried to explain it a few times. They get most of it though... I believe. We don't talk about it too much.

And... uh, they reacted fine? They've gone with me to conventions and my mom even worked a convention with me. Um, I mean, both are sports fans of varying level so I don't think it bothers them. I think they're just happy I have hobbies.

Dude, they RAISED me in fandom. We've made going to cons a family affair for over 20 years.

My parents know about the fan-art and occasional cosplay that I do but not any fanfic I read(my dad knows what fanfic is but I'm preeeeeeaty sure he doesn't know I read it). Tbh if it wasn't for them not having the internet when they were young I reckon they would have both been in fandom.

my mom has always known; I guess my dad probably did too? I suppose they thought it was weird when I was younger but I'm an adult now and mom, at least, has gotten used to it. Then again, my parents were huge Trekkies in their day so that's probably why it was nbd.

My graduation gift was a trip to a small con, so yeah, they know. :) They're impressed by the work that goes into my pony customs, even if they don't "get" them. They know enough about fanfic to understand me saying things like "I found a really fun prompt to fill" or "Someone put me on their rec list" and recognize that this is a thing to be happy about. I'm open enough about my usernames and ehich sites I use that they could probably find my fic if so inclined, but they have no interest in it, thank God. (I don't write smut and I'm pretty proud of my writing overall, but I'm weirdly shy about people I know IRL reading my stuff.) The only real negative is my dad's frustrating tendency towards "You're so talented; why aren't you finding a way to make money off this?"

I doubt my parents would know what fandom is. We're not very close and I only call them every few weeks, so there is a lot of stuff we never get around to talking about.

They both know, but my mom doesn't really understand what things like fics are.

My dad looked up "slash" on Wikipedia xD He's okay with it, albeit a tad confused about what's the appeal.

My mom knows I'm into fandom, but not much about it. It's not a secret, but I don't go into details either-- more like, "I read a really good fic earlier" when she asks about my day. There wasn't really a specific moment she found out, it just happened gradually.

I have offered to rec her Jane Austen fanfiction before, since she does like what is essentially published fanfiction for P&P, much of which is worse than what you can find online, but she doesn't really use the computer, so.
