Re: As someone who religiously warns for OCs

Let's say you see a fic tagged "Character A" and the summary sounds interesting. Great, right?

But then you click and find that it's actually a fic about "Character B" instead and you don't even care about that character, so it's not really something you want to read.

Would you like for that fic to be properly tagged or do you think it's ok that the author is misleading readers?

Because THAT is the issue with untagged OC fics. Some readers do overreact, though, but it's annoying when a fandom is full of OC fics and no one brothers to tag them.

It'd be kinda annoying yeah

But I don't see why it's rage inducing. I look through it, maybe look ahead and then go "oh" and leave.

Sorta like how I'm intensely annoyed by character bashing. When I go into a tag and see bashing I'ms just like "...oh...ugh" and click out.

But that's just me, *shrug*

When it's one fic it doesn't matter.

When it's two it's a minor annoyance.

When it's three it start getting tiring.

When it's fifteen (number taken from the latest 25 fic in a specific fandom that I'm into that in the last month has had more OC centric fics than canon character centric fics) then it's so frustrating that I can't decide if I want to give up on this fandom or scream to people to at least tag their fic.
No one is telling them to stop writing. Just, please, tag it. It's not much to ask, isn't it?

Just a minor correction

"No one is telling them to stop writing."

Actually...yes...I see plenty of people saying "stop writing it" "just write original fic" "nobody cares"

From my experience OC writers get told not to write ALL THE TIME. (and it's annoying as hell getting a bunch of people saying "Nobody cares about your shitty fic, whenever I see them I backbutton in disgust" rather than "I'm not really interested in that please tag it".

I agree, people should tag and it's good manners just like tagging anything else.

But ...yeah I just had to point that out. If I got a dollar for every time I've seen some variant of "nobody cares about your shitty Mary Sue" in these conversations well I wouldn't need a job.

(It'd be lovely if we could have conversations about OCs that aren't arguments over "good versus bad" one day)

Yes, agreed.

I backspace and find a fic I want to read because I don't fancy myself a fandom vigilante who is concerned about the integrity of every story in fandom.

get off your high horse already.

So... do you also think it's ok to "misstag" the fandoms to get more readers and oh, I see this all the time on AO3 under the excuse of "multifandom drabble collection" that doesn't include one or more of the tagged fandoms?

DA

That's annoying. :(

On a slightly different but somewhat related note, this reminds me of someone I ran into in fandom years ago who was deeply aggrieved that fandom expected her to label her fic for pairings. She argued that labeling for pairings was completely ridiculous and just made people skip over fic that they might otherwise have read and enjoyed. I think it was that she liked to sneak unpopular pairings into her fic once the reader was invested, and knew that she wouldn't get the readers if she labeled for the pairing up front.
