As someone who religiously warns for OCs

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

I mean I understand warning to avoid trouble. But I don't like how some flip out over OC fics.

I think fandom is a bit silly about it. While I've seen some people write horrible OCs. I've seen people be big drama queens about happening upon a fic.

I mean seriously. So you stumbled upon a bad OC. I don't see how this warrants cussing out the author and telling them to take the story down "NOWNOWNOWNOW". Or leaving some ambiguous bizarre ramble to express your dislike. (one person left someone a review that was nothing but a grossly worded description of a sweaty basement dweller chanting something on a fic that was standard 13 year old suefic fare.)

I just I get giving critique but there's a lot of people who are big fucking babies about reading what they don't like.

(also, except in extreme cases where someone is deliberately attacking people or being racist or offensive in their fics (or writing edgy shit that triggers people) ordering someone to take down a fic because you don't like it is just as bratty as shrieking at people who give you good advice.)

If it a minor OC, no problem. But a story about an OC? No thanks. Warn me for that. If I wanted to read about original characters, I'd read actual novels.

Gotcha. I always warn. *thumbs up*

I have no interest in fanfiction with OCs as the main (I read non-fanfiction for good OCs), but if the story summary doesn't wave a red flag to warn me away, I usually don't have to read far before I know the story's not for me.

(And hey, if they do keep my interest, I'll certainly keep reading. It rarely happens, but I admit the potential.)

I hate people that demand a fic be taken down unless its a troll fic or plagiarizing or some such. Bratty is the perfect word for them.

Re: As someone who religiously warns for OCs

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I had someone do that in a convo here. was talking about a fic of mine in a conversation about OC fics which was in an original setting and heavily based on character development for the main canons but had OCs as part of the setting. They picked a fight with me and kept saying stuff about how the fic was OBVIOUSLY shit. I apologized for talking about it believing I had mad some social mistake or came off egotistical.

They were like "well delete your stupid fic to prove it". At that point I was just like "No. I apologized for bothering you, not for writing a fic I enjoyed.

They called me butthurt and then left.

Re: As someone who religiously warns for OCs

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That's pretty shitty of them. Sorry that people suck. :(

I saw a similar convo on Tumblr once, there's this big fanfic in my fandom that's popular yet hated at the same time. Personally I think it's OOC and it sucks after reading all 50 chapters, and someone went on a mini-rant about it. I agreed with them (they went back and forth with the author for a while), up until the point where they said the author should delete it. The author had already apologized for OOCness and stuff like abuse, but she refused to delete it. Which, as much as I disliked it, I'd never ask someone to do.

JFC, this.

The amount of offense people take over OCs is ridiculous to the point of satire worth hilarity.

and the people defending their precious litle snowflake OCs are not?

DA

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Pft I'm not angry. I just don't see why an OC warrants a torrent of hate and jeering, when badly written canons are kind of frequent in fanfic.

Your comment is a perfect example. Someone commented on ridiculous anger over something you hate? You just have to rush in and make a derisive patronizing comment about it. "You're just mad because you're defensive surely that's it."

Why is it pathetic that people speak in favor of OCs and retort when people are rude to them about what they write.

Maybe i'm just a fiction writing nerd who's a bit annoyed that the important skill of learning to create ones OWN characters is pushed aside and labeled as "something stupid suethors do". I guess some fanfiction writers love to play in someone else's sandbox but get personally affronted at the thought of adding something of their own.

Either because

a.) I don't like to read it so no one should write it.
b.) It was done badly a lot before, so it shouldn't be done
or
c. ) BUT THAT"S NOT THE RIGHT WAY TO DO FANFICTION.

I mean really I agree with the idea of warnings. But it would be really nice if people could advocate it without slipping in a snide "you stupid shitty Mary Sue."

Some people who write OCs are probably defensive because almost all they ever get is jeering sneering and snide remarks , or faux-concerned "just write original fic so you don't get flamed sweetie" . But no. It's not all right for them to get upset about that or they're just"speshul snowflakes" or "butthurt whiners". Sometimes they're considered butthurt for asking for critique without the razor sharp remarks.

Some people don't like OCs. Congratulations. We get it. We know it because it gets reinforced. We don't need to have it beaten into our head every time someone brings up OCs.

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to be in a community where you're reminded constantly that you're not wanted unless you can produce something of amazing skill and sometimes not even then. Or told all the time when you have an idea, "keep it to yourself" sometimes even "if you like writing that chop off your fingers so you never touch a keyboard again". You can watch other people talk about and rec fics but know that if you talk about yours you'll get told repeatedly that it's shit and you should just take it down.

tl;dr :Nobody's asking you to love OCs (well nobody here). I've never expected that of any of my friends. When one friend of mine told me how she didn't like OCs because of bad experiences I fully sympathized having seen quite a few bad OCs with annoying creators myself. All I've asked of people is , for God's sake don't be a dick about it. I know it's unpopular. I know it.

For every annoying 13 year old with a sue , there's about five people who just want to write what they love without being sneered at or yelled at, or cussed out.

If I wrote an OC someone didn't like and whines about it I'd tell them to fuck right off. Because no one cares about your opinion. I say that as someone who is used to professional critique.

I see far more whining about those "horrible" OCs than I see anyone getting defensive of their OCs.

Re: As someone who religiously warns for OCs

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
If you warn that an OC is one of the maincharacters, you're less likely to have people getting angry with you. Because those people know up front and skip over.

But trying to sneak it in without warning? Damn right people are going to get annoyed. This is my relaxing time. I WANT TO READ SOMETHING I LIKE. I am no longer in highschool and I'm not an editor or anything similar. I don't want to read something I'm not looking for and if someone tries to trick me into reading about an OC by not tagging for them, damn right I will make a snarky comment about OC's and backspace the hell out of there. Because you just wasted my time because you didn't have the decency to list OC in the main character area. So all you've done is piss us both off

"This is my relaxing time. I WANT TO READ SOMETHING I LIKE. "

Okay uh...I understand annoyance toward this but...that much anger. I mean dude, you can always just close the tab or back button out. I mean I never got people flying into a fucking rage because the story went a way they didn't like.

I have backbuttoned out of several stories that had unwarned character bashing. I dislike character bashing intensely. But when I see it slipped in? "blegh" I close it and find something else more pleasant. I don't feel like I'm ENTITLED to make a snarky comment because I was "tricked" into reading something I hate.(I did once comment bluntly on the OOCness of one bashfic, but that was just because everyone was praising it as a 'deep awesome fic') Yeah it's your time but....no one's making you read it. and if you choose to go another chapter of a fic you hate then...well that's your choice.

Is this concept that hard, really?

You are a moron. Did you not see that they said that it was their time by not fucking tagging for the shitty-shitty shit-crap OC and Self Insert Mary Sue then the author has wasted their time five seconds or five minutes it matters not. Damn right everyone is entitled to hatebomb that writer off the internet. They can go steal time off someone else.

Funny how OCs are something you MUST WARN PEOPLE ABOUT OR ELSE and if you don't people have every right to be a bitch to you

But if someone had a character they HATED and through a complete hissy fit because that character had a part in the story and was not tagged , most people would just be "geez who pissed in your cheerios?"

But if someone forgets to tag OC or doesn't know that it's a thing (Maybe they're new) than that's a crime against nature.

I'm not objecting that people should warn. But the reactions i'm seeing about people feeling entitled to be jerks rather than calmly inform them that it's good manners to tag for OC, and the "HATEBOMB THEM OFF THE INTERNET" reactions.

It's just a bit ridiculous. Are we this pissy and imamture, fandom?

I don't know where you're getting "hatebomb" from "I will make a snarky comment about OC's and backspace the hell out of there (about OC fics I've been tricked into reading)".
I'm just annoyed about untagged OCs*, you're throwing a tantrum with words like "pissy", "immature" and "hatebomb" - because I know what I want to read and get annoyed at wasting my time because someone didn't tag properly?

If you don't tag an OC as the main character in fanfiction, you cannot be surprised people will be annoyed about it and probably make a snarky comment. People (generally) do not go into fanfic for OC's.

Is it really so hard for you to understand that when it comes to something fun in my free time, goddamn yes I want to read something I like and not be surprised with main!character!OC? o_O

*untagged characters I hate being main characters will also piss me off. just tag your main characters. Yes I'm going to be annoyed if I want to read about Pepper Potts' Amazing Adventure, it's advertised as such and instead I get the monologues of Captain America.

But... not having OCs doesn't mean you'll automatically like a fic, and you don't automatically like all the OC-less fics you read, right? The way you find that out whether or not you like something is by reading it. The very millisecond you decide you don't like it, you can stop reading.

So... exact same method for determining whether or not you like/dislike a fic, regardless of OC content. How is that time wasted?

Let's say you see a fic tagged "Character A" and the summary sounds interesting. Great, right?

But then you click and find that it's actually a fic about "Character B" instead and you don't even care about that character, so it's not really something you want to read.

Would you like for that fic to be properly tagged or do you think it's ok that the author is misleading readers?

Because THAT is the issue with untagged OC fics. Some readers do overreact, though, but it's annoying when a fandom is full of OC fics and no one brothers to tag them.

Re: As someone who religiously warns for OCs

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
It'd be kinda annoying yeah

But I don't see why it's rage inducing. I look through it, maybe look ahead and then go "oh" and leave.

Sorta like how I'm intensely annoyed by character bashing. When I go into a tag and see bashing I'ms just like "...oh...ugh" and click out.

But that's just me, *shrug*

Okay, I'll admit. My problem with OCs mostly stems from people ignoring the "No OCs" bit on rp ads to try to hassle me into doing a canon character to their mary-sue oc in a wish fulfillment rp for them.

So, when someone doesn't warn for OCs I get a pretty strong feeling of "oh god, forced into this" that backs me hit the back button fast enough I'd swear I leave skid marks.

That said, I don't bitch at the authors about it - I just leave and don't look back.
