That's all right, the show is pretty overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's a very good show, but I was honestly disappointed when I finally watched it because everyone seems to agree that it's THE best show ever made. And it isn't. It's good, but not more. And before someone says "maybe it's just not your kind of show", I don't think so, considering that I love both Oz and The Shield.

I LOVE Oz and The Shield, too! But I couldn't get into The Wire at all. And I was really looking forward to it because it had some people I really like, too );

And? I love both shows, and OZ is my third favorite show ever, but they are completely different from The Wire. They aren't even in the same tier. So yes, The Wire is probably not your kind of show.

Anyways, you shouldn't judge a show based on your personal opinion . If so many critics consider The Wire a masterpiece and one of the best shows ever, then you have to accept it. Would you think that Shakespeare, Joyce or Velazquez are overrated just because you didn't like them?

They are similar when it comes to having very large casts and lots of morally grey characters, because what people usually say when you don't like The Wire is "oh you just don't like it because it doesn't have one main character and everybody is more or less horrible and everybody can die". Also ... I liked The Wire? I found it interesting to watch, it just wasn't as great as I expected.

I never said The Wire was not a good show. It's a very good show. It is NOT the best show ever made. I can think of several shows that are simply better. Similarily, I'd never say Joyce is not a great author. I would, however, disagree if anyone called Joyce the greatest author who ever lived.

That "oh you just don't like it because it doesn't have one main character and everybody is more or less horrible and everybody can die" sounds so childish. Nor criticzing you but the people who says things like that, just to be clear.

I assume that most people don't like The Wire because it's a complex show that doesn't give a shit about the viewer, so it's the viewer the one that needs to get into the story and not the story sponfeeding the viewer like most media does. I remember when I started watching a season for the first time, during the first episodes I didnt understand what the hell was going on and who the characters were. It was confusing.

It's pretty hard to get into The Wire, but I also needed a few opisodes to get into Oz. Except once I did get into Oz, I was really interested in everything that was happening, in every single character. And on The Wire there are just always storylines that I don't give a shit about, characters that are bland and uninteresting, and then I wish I'd either get DIFFERENT characters or more about the actually complex/interesting characters. I suppose the disadvantage of the show not giving a shit about the viewer is that, while it's extremely interesting at times, it's also fairly dull at others.

If we are discussing best show ever made, then the only two options are The Wire or The Sopranos. I won't accept any other answer.

Disagree on both accounts. Although tbh I wish people would just stop calling any show the best show ever because the result is that anyone who gets into a show expecting "the best show ever" usually ends up disappointed. I can think of several shows I would have enjoyed a lot more if I hadn't started watching them with the expectation that they'd be ~the best show ever~.

As long as you don't care about getting to know the characters and don't mind that half the scenes don't have any context until later in the episode or maybe even not until another 6 episodes.

Getting to know the characters? What does that entail for you? And the second part of your sentence is part of why the show is so great.

I think they're using that second part as a pacing complaint. I like The Wire, but it's not for everyone. I certainly found the pacing unsatisfying in many of the seasons- too slow at first, too rushed at the end of an arc.
