I'm not exactly face blind, but I have a problem telling people apart in a lot of historical fiction/fantasy when there are too many white guys with similar clothes and hair. I had issues with Boardwalk Empire at first too, except for Steve Buschemi (glad I got over it, though; it's a really good show). I didn't have that problem with The Wire, except maybe in the beginning of the fourth season where there are a lot of children who get introduced at once, and you should give it a shot because it's one of the best shows ever. It's got a cast of approximately two billion but they all look quite different.

Yeah, having just rewatched the pilot and actually knowing who everyone was, The Wire is really hard for remembering characters. It's almost literally a cast of thousands, and character names are used in passing so often that it took me a whole season to be able to name most of them.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to give it a real shot, too, but my problem with it was all the swearing. I have absolutely no problem with swearing, but when it's ever few words it just gets annoying. Plus I'm really not into shows/films about cops and gangs and drugs.

My mom is obsessed with it though, and we own all the seasons, so I'll try to give it another chance.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, me too.

no as bad as you, or I learned some tricks to get around it but I still don't want to watch any videos.

Secret 6 - The Wire, face blindness

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-16 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a promotional image of the HBO TV show "The Wire". It has the tagline "Rules change. The game remains the same." It shows two men inside a car. The one in the driver seed is looking out the window. The window is partially rolled up, showing the reflection of the car in the next lane, traveling in the opposite direction. It shows two other men looking back at him. No one looks happy at all.]

I've heard so many good things about this, but I don't think I can even watch it because of my face blindness. I already had to drop Boardwalk Empire because I just couldn't tell who was on the screen at any given time and I HATE IT.

At least I still have animation.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That's all right, the show is pretty overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's a very good show, but I was honestly disappointed when I finally watched it because everyone seems to agree that it's THE best show ever made. And it isn't. It's good, but not more. And before someone says "maybe it's just not your kind of show", I don't think so, considering that I love both Oz and The Shield.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE Oz and The Shield, too! But I couldn't get into The Wire at all. And I was really looking forward to it because it had some people I really like, too );

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
>I don't think so, considering that I love both Oz and The Shield.
And? I love both shows, and OZ is my third favorite show ever, but they are completely different from The Wire. They aren't even in the same tier. So yes, The Wire is probably not your kind of show.

Anyways, you shouldn't judge a show based on your personal opinion . If so many critics consider The Wire a masterpiece and one of the best shows ever, then you have to accept it. Would you think that Shakespeare, Joyce or Velazquez are overrated just because you didn't like them?

ginainthekingsroad: Aldo Raine- It's not delivery, it's Bongerno! (Basterds- Bongerno)

I can completely understand that. Even face blindness aside, The Wire is very, very bad at giving characters' names. They'll say a character's name once fleetingly and then not say it again for up to a season and half. Not joking. I could follow very easily which main group a character was in, but it always would take like 6 episodes before I got their names down. I wanted a book of headshots so could follow it better.

I hate it when shows/films don't really differentiate in the cast. I like war movies, but, they're hell. It's lke 8 dudes with a crew cut. If you're lucky one of them's black or has glasses. But otherwise they pretty much look identical to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
+1

In animation they have a concept called "casting for contrast" - your characters should be easy to recognize in a lineup (and in the case of cartoons, by silhouette only). They should be different enough from the other cast members that there's no mistaking them. Wish more live action shows adhered to it.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Faceblindness is why I dropped House. Not being able to reliably tell Chase and Wilson apart made it really hard to follow the character dynamics sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I finished season 4 some weeks ago and I still can't distinguish between Michael and Dukie. They look so alike.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The Wire is the best show on television. Ever.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
And yet HBO subscriptions actually dropped every year right after they announced they were renewing it for another season. They actually lost money on the show because it was expensive to produce and it drove viewers away instead of drawing them in.

Watch with a buddy? That's what I do. Which makes Orphan Black unexpectedly hilarious.
Me: "Oh, is she a clone too?"
Friend: "Yes."
Me, later: "Oh, wait, is she actually another clone too?"
Friend: "Yes, that's what the last 15 minutes have been all about!"
Me: "How was I supposed to know? Her hair is so different!"

Have you read You Don't Look Like Anyone I Know by Heather Sellers. Kind of OT, but I've heard the book is quite good and I met the author. She's very sweet and thankfully since I was an intern I had a nametag.

I have that problem too but I still liked The Wire. I may not have the problem as badly as you. I can eventually recognize characters, it just takes me a long time. Names are much harder to remember, though. There are shows I've been watching for seasons that I still don't know important character names for.

I'm horrible with faces too, OP. I tend to focus on haircuts/clothing/hands a lot, and even moreso when characters look similar to begin with.

I was watching an Australian movie called Bait a few months ago, and it really took me about half an hour in to realize there were two main guys, that it wasn't one guy with two girlfriends. XD

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand how this would be a pain. Is it possible to try recognizing the characters by their voices alone and by reading synopses before watching each episode? I'm horrible with voices but even now I can recreate the voices of the characters (the main cast at least) in my head because their voices are so easily recognizable.

I've linked to this before, best Wire fanart: The Wire lineup (McNulty is the one with his pants down)

I'm not good with faces - I tell people apart by hair/glasses, and have been known not to recognize friends when they wear their contacts.

Omg, that art's amazing!

I could've really used that poster when I was getting into the show - I'm partly faceblind, too. Now I can keep the characters apart easy but it took a while because there are just so freaking many.

(Shame the picture is missing Namond and Randy...)

I love this thread! It's kind of nice to know I'm not alone. I did know that already, but...

I always try to watch films/TV with someone else, so that each time a new character comes on screen they can tell me whether we've already been introduced to that character or not. Unless it's someone with really distinctive features, of course, but there aren't nearly enough of them!
