I've never really noticed if female characters lose out in the whole male protags v female protags thing. I mean, I'm pretty sure half the media I own have female protags. What exactly would make you so sick about male characters?

I'm starting to feel that way now and then. It doesn't stop me reading/watching them, and enjoying them, but I sometimes have that kneejerk reaction of 'oh, yet another story about men' when I hear about a new film or series or book.

I'm totally on this bandwagon. I think it really stuck with me lately because I went to several movies in a row and the previews were 'white guy does this! white guy does that! white guy drives a car! white guy! white guy! white guy!" Granted, that was a conflation of "why are all of these fucking stories about dudes" and "why are all of these fucking stories about white dudes", but for fuck's sake, let someone else do something. I don't know that I care who, just someone else. I do not give a fuck about seeing another white dude do something. Usually I have no problem identifying with a character in some way, even if it's just wanting to be that badass, but I'm so over it. So very over it.

Also, Ron Howard. That movie 'Rush' you made? Will Ferrell already made it. It was called Talladega Nights and it was awesome.

And a pre-emptive fuck off to all the assholes who are going to find their way to this thread to tell you to "just watch something else!" or "cry moar" or whatever other bullshit.

To be honest, sometimes, I feel the same way about straight people. I'm usually fine, but some days it's just tiring how practically all media is about them.

In some genres/media types female protagonists are everywhere - particularly YA books - so as everyone above is saying, if you're interested in those, you're golden. Just read the back.

But.... if you're interested in other genres, or media like video games.... ...yeah let's just say I feel you. While we're at it I'd just like a dude who wasn't a grizzled 30-something dark-haired white guy.

I know what you mean. It makes it really hard sometimes to find tv shows and movies to watch and books to read. Like I don't mind stories about guys, but damn...there's such thing as overkill.
Also ignore the "cry moar" or "watch other stuff then" responses. Because you might lose some brain cells otherwise.

I feel like this is similar to when I got sick of eating Mac N' Cheese. I didn't eat it for a long time and it used to be my favorite. Then after a couple of years I tried it again and it was great.

So, uh, I would just say remove yourself as best you can from the stuff that annoys you. Hopefully some distance will ease everything out.

I'm sick of stories about boring people! If the protagonist is interesting, why the fuck would I care how their junk is configured? :P

If the story and characters are interesting I don't really care about the protagonists gender, but at the same time more female protagonists is always a positive thing. And there should be more female protagonists in general, especially in certain types of media, but I won't go out of my way to avoid playing as, reading about or watching a male protagonist either.

Still, if you're tired of them, you're tired of them; I hope you find some books to fit your criteria. (I would recommend some but these days I mostly read fanfiction. That said, the first book that comes to mind is Inkheart, which is the first book in a YA trilogy (which I never finished, btw...oops), but if you want rec's you should ask general comments tomorrow!)

I had the same problem after starting to read books again. After 30 books I really got annoyed at the same old wiener stories, the same old coming of age books with Nice Guys who get the girls, the fantasy books ripe with shitty tropes etc etc.
I swallowed those because there were other things to like about the books (why would I read them otherwise), but it really was too much!

So I started to look out for female authors in particular. It's really not that easy, at least at my library. I take books from the shelf and the ratio is slanted as fuck.
If I would just go by books that look interesting without giving it any thought, I would get a ratio of 7-1.

And those are just books which are written by female authors, which doesn't necessarily mean female protagonist. If you want to read something by a non Western female author or POC, just anything non standard, the range is even smaller. I found two books of that sort in my library and I don't have the time or the money to get my books somewhere else.
(although there's probably eBooks online somewhere? but I want to read in my own language)

And if somebody wants to look for those books by female authors?
Tough luck. In almost all magazines ~70% of all book reviews are written about books by male authors (the number vary, but it's never less than 50% if it's not the focus in particular and reaches up to 86%).

Meanwhile if I would still be satisfied by a male perspective alone, I could read hundreds of books in the same library, get the reviews of the few books that seem interesting enough to buy etc etc.
And yeah, I suck it up and read them.
It's a lot of work to "just read something else". It just started as a taste for some variety, but the more I notice it the more annoyed I get.

Eh, I can kinda see that. It hasn't been bothering me with books, but at the beginning of every new TV season in particular I sometimes find myself getting kinda tired of TV shows starring bland white guys. Like, it's not even that they are starring white guys that bugs me but that half the time they're the blandest, most interchangeable white guys ever. If the show's gotta star a white guy it would be nice if the lead was at least charismatic or interesting in some way, instead of Bland Inoffensive White Guy Hero #3120 and sometimes it just feels like there's way too much of that.

Then read a real book! For chrissake, fanfiction is wish fulfillment. Wish fulfillment for a fandom pull of women. Of course it's all about attractive dudes. Don't get me wrong, you'll find the rare bit of diamond among the coal, but the reality is that you're looking in the wrong place.

Pick up a real book if you want character variety and genuine story quality.
