Then make a comm/tumblr/whatever to discuss your love of OCs? If you are discussing in a general fandom area people are going to want to talk about canon characters and plots.

But they're talking OCs that exist in canon worlds, too.

Yes. But on F!S (when discussing secrets), it is an open discussion between people who like/love/hate OCs.

There have been plenty of threads in General Chat with people discussing their favorite OCs they have written/read.

But in terms of a posted secret, anyone can talk about their opinion on OCs, and the fact of the matter is people who like OCs seem to be a minority.

You can try to make a safe space.

People will still seek it out and complain about the fact OCs exist.

Yes but that is every place on the internet ever. Get used to it.

OP

First of all , I want to say that your comment really made me think. I'm not being sarcastic here.

I'm starting to think maybe if I want to discuss the world building and such of a particular fandom I spin my query / topic starter around 'discussing how the world works and world building and ,make the focus of the thread on world rather than character. I do realize people are less enthusiastic about a character they don't know but perhaps they would be more engaged in a topic discussing something like "The wizard community of [country that isn't America or Europe]"

I think that would be a wonderful way to go about something like that. It would not only encourage people talking about the world, but I expect people that are only interested in canon would be happy to talk about it!

I don't care terribly much for OCs in SPN, but I would love to discuss the world outside of Dean, Sam, and Castiel. What other hunters think of all the crap that has happened. What angels think of everything. But I would be terribly bored talking about OC Bob in SPN.

I wouldn't cry if spirk writers got tied up and used as target practice by that nice Klingon cruiser crew who meet every month for Chinese and language practice. All with nerf guns and roleplay just to be clear.

I understand what all of those words mean. But have no idea what they mean together.

Ok, the bullet point list.

* People who develop, write about, and roleplay original characters in the expanded universes are fandom.
* People who create fan crafts are fandom.
* People who watch/read/play the source materials are fandom.
* People who write criticism of the source materials are fandom.

If you don't want to hear any of that and just want to talk about fanfic about "canon" characters, you, not me, you, need to go to your fanfic-only spaces.

Okay. I have no idea what that has to do with the Star Trek thing above...

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-09-22 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Star Trek has a long tradition of an expanded universe, including a largely fan-created culture of people researching, developing, and roleplaying OC spacecraft crews.

My comment was that we should perhaps imagine feeding the spirk shippers, who may or may not have done much of a close reading of the various sources, to the Klingons, whose absurdly rich fan culture is pulled from trying to reconcile universe lore scattered across multiple TV series and movies spanning multiple decades.
