Korra crew member vs Tumblr

(Anonymous) 2013-09-24 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
So, someone who works on the show left tumblr recently because he was upset by all the negative comments about Korra he was seeing. (I guess he was searching the Korra tag or something?) This has sort of blown up on tumblr now, with fans saying they have a right to be negative, etc.

I know this is a kind of unpopular opinion, but...I don't ATLA was as great as people think/remember it being. It doesn't surprise me at all that Korra isn't really panning out to be that great. I'm kind of amused that nostalgia goggles are so thick at this point.

For me, it's not that the nostalgia glasses are thick, it's just Korra is such an unlikable lead. It says much that Aang at 12 and on his own was more mature than Korra at 17 and raised with someone always around her. The rest of the characters are one note compared to how complex ATLA was. Take for example Sokka who started off as comic relief but grew to not be just that but a brilliant tactician. What has his equivalent Bolin done? Nothing. He's still the comic relief. He has not grown as a character.

I like LOK. I like Korra as a main character. I rewatched ATLA before season 2 started, and although I think ATLA has a better flow, I still think people judge LOK to harshly.

Korra has been growing as a main character and even tho the whole Mako/Asami/Korra love triangle last season wasn't the best, this season Mako/Korra has been sweet. Mako is a good supporting boyfriend and Korra is learning to control her temper, even if at times she's still uses her fists before thinking. Which isn't bad. A lot of male characters act that way, but because Korra is female, I think people are retaliating against her. It's nice to see a woman who is powerful and has her own agency. She's not subservient and speaks her mind. I think its great to see. Plus, she's only 17 and I think people forget we went all stand up citizens at that age. We acted out and make mistakes. That's being a teen.

Korra's growing and maturing and exploring the world and people in a way her father and Tenzin hadn't allowed before. She's finding her footing in the world and I think that's realistic for a 17 year old girl.

I'm enjoying season 2 :)

I think the people complaining about Korra being so immature didn't do that, though. They complained in the corner (or the internet). I'm not judging, I did that too.

Korra strikes me as a very realistic teenager (if that teenager had magical kung fu powers). Aang was a goddamn monk.

Was he new to tumblr or something? Or the internet in general? Because jeebus what a horrible idea, it's no wonder he left.

I kind of get annoyed with the whole "don't tag your hate/negativity" because fuck all y'all, I'll tag what I want.

I checked out the tagging hate tag on Tumblr and someone was pitching a fit because someone told them off for griping about people tagging hate for Justin Bieber yet tagging hate for another singer themselves

It was Bill Rinaldi, and no, he wasn't new

Uh, no, it has nothing to do with nostalgia goggles. ATLA WAS pretty good, and even if it wasn't a masterpiece, it avoided a lot of the pitfalls that Korra has not been able to climb out of since last season. Just the regular progression of plot and character development was miles above what Korra delivered last season.

That said, last season did not leave a good, solid base for second season, and even though I think this new season could actually show the characters developing, it's frustrating to have to go through the same issues again.

Is ATLA old enough for nostalgia goggles? It only ended six years ago, and a lot of the fandom were already adults since the beginning.

Well I watched ATLA for the first time last year so it's definitely not nostalgia. I like Korra, but it's not as good. Mostly I think they're trying to shove in too much content for a half hour cartoon and everything suffers...

ATLA Actually was pretty good, and *amazingly* good if you compare it to children's shows [which is what it was] in it's day, even more so compared to the normal fare Nick generally runs. I say this without the goggles on, btw - I just recently rewatched the show and I'll admit that it isn't the perfect thing some people make it out to be. But it is very good.

LOK on the hand...the first season, at least, was rushed, the love triangle was thrown in for no apparent reason [and was badly handled on top of it] and Korra...just isn't that likable for a lot of people.

I haven't actually watched all of ATLA (I missed a lot of book one and a chunk of book three), so it's definitely not nostalgia here - and I ADORED Korra when it started (both the show and the character!). My main issue with it is that it started out extraordinarily promising - showing that there are actual issues that arise when part of the population has powers that others don't, a chance for the protagonist to actually grow, likeable characters...

And I'm trying hard not to go, "Well, I'm never watching again!" because we've really only seen fifteen episodes out of what'll eventually be fifty-something, but I do think it's gone downhill compared to the extremely strong beginning. I'm comparing it to its own first book, and even as late as episode eight I was thinking it was awesome. It's really just been lately that it's become a letdown, and especially this book so far.

When I said nostalgia, I meant that I think it's nostalgia goggles that are making ATLA seem like this amazing show, when it was just okay. The first season was awful, the third season was full of filler episodes and that terrible deus ex machina ending it had was just cringe worthy.
