But Pertwee!

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? A Pertwee had something to do with Sherlock Holmes? Where? When? How????

Will watch nearly anything to support the Pertwee family.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Sean Pertwee played Lestrade in the season opener of Elementary.

I'm so glad someone else came here to say this.

I tried so hard to like Elementary but it just didn't happen. :( And that sucks because I need some new shows now.

I liked him ok.

But I'm kind of annoyed that both Elementary and Sherlock have a thin Mycroft but feel the need to say he USED to be fat. Uh, why? I kinda feel like they should either have him be fat, or just have him be thin, without the "Oh, but he used to be fat" thing. Neither of the shows is close enough to canon that they need to make reference to what Mycroft looked like in canon.

Well, in the case of Elementary it was a clue that Mycroft was/is (I didn't actually really catch that, is he still sick or was he sick?) sick, so it's not like the mention is completely pointless.

Except the way it was done, it kind of felt like they had him be sick to explain his weight loss. I don't even recall his illness playing any part in his relationship with Sherlock or anything...

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely think it would have been great for either of the modern adaptations to make Mycroft fat. However, I'm actually more interested in either adaptation stating unequivocally that Mycroft is the smarter brother, but just lazy. That's something (as well as the fatness) Ritchie's otherwise terrible movies got right, at least.

However, I also love that Elementary's Mycroft wasn't in the secret service (as far as we know). I know it's a well established ACD fanon thing that Mycroft actually worked for the government, but I love the idea in Elementary that he a restaurant empire owner and skilled chef, and that he set up that atmospheric dinner for Watson, because it emphasises that his character is sensually hedonistic in a way that is completely different to Sherlock. But at the same time we know that Sherlock is an addict, so Mycroft's indulgence actually is a point of similarity between the brothers. And I think if you don't bring that across in Mycroft you can't believe their sibling relationship, which is a balance Sherlock BBC's Mycroft, though otherwise a great character, doesn't quite achieve. That's also why Elementary got it right when they made Mycroft be thin because of an illness he couldn't control rather than deliberate dieting. Mycroft? Diet? Pffft.

Your footnotes was redundant, because I'd say that ANY room you put them in automatically becomes a sexy room.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
A sign will even appear on the door saying "SEXY ROOM."

I retract my redundant footnote immediately and humbly accept your correction. Mmmm, sexy room

I marathoned it a couple of weeks ago to pass time when I was sick, and I'm very glad I did.

If you have free time, definitely do it! :)

I did not expect to enjoy it, but very much did. I recommend it, but I do offer the usual "the pilot is kinda shaky; give it a bit" caveat.

I LOVED broken, drunken, famewhore Gareth Lestrade. Miserable Lestrade was what I was hoping Sherlock series 3 would bring. But, I wouldn't mind if Greg Lestrade spent some time locked in a sexy room.

(Thanks, Elementary anons for the episode suggestions - that was some entertaining TV)

Rupert Graves is the only reason I even tried to watch Sherlock. He was enough for me to make it through ASiP, but sadly no further.

I will have to give Elementary a shot because I would love to see a Mycroft that is believable as both Sherlock's brother AND a Holmes. Every adaptation I've ever seen only pulls off one of those two things :(

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the idea of Elementary, and I love Lucy Liu, but I refuse to watch it until the show is completely done and I know Sherlock and Watson never, ever get together. But I love Lestrade in Sherlock. I don't know who plays him in Elementary, but he'd have some pretty big shoes to fill in my heart. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I have to agree, if only because this is the one incarnation where I see absolutely no UST between Holmes and Watson. Love, yes. Affection in massive amounts, yes. But no sexual tension.

Which I guess is odd because I find both of them to be very sexy.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
The potential get-together is one of two reasons I never bothered with Elementary. The instant they said 'female Watson' I figured that's where it was going to go and I'm oh so tired of that because it happens in every damn show with a male-female duo. I know the writers say it won't happen, but hooking up the leads is the go-to when the ratings start to dip (an inevitability as a show ages and they run out of ideas) so I'd be shocked if the series ends without so much as a temporary hook-up.

If by some miracle it does, I might give it a try if I can overcome my other aversion to it: Sherlock Holmes set in America. Even if he himself is still British, it just doesn't seem right. To me, Sherlock Holmes doesn't fit in the American landscape any more than Supernatural would be the same if it were set in the UK. Sherlock Holmes in London is a British icon. Setting Sherlock Holmes in America seems like it would make him just another detective in yet another cop show set in, big surprise, NYC, although with a cooler accent and a more-recognizable name. It just feels off to me. Even having a few eps of Dr Who set here felt weird; and that guy goes to other planets so it makes sense he could show up in the US from time to time. Still seemed weird.

I certainly don't dislike Mark Gatiss as Mycroft, but I definitely enjoyed Elementary's version more too. I was delighted by the Holmes brothers last scene together, and I think they make a more interesting (and fun) pair of siblings as a whole; the dynamic has a lot of potential! I hope the show takes advantage of that because I'd love to see Mycroft back in future episodes.

(NGL though, I DO like Sherlock's Lestrade better as well. Maybe this is me being shallow, idk, but I didn't hate Elementary's take on him either, so I say that's a win.)

They felt like brothers? Oh, damn, that would be a good reason to check out this show again. I'm still pissed they sunk my headcanon about Mycroft, but if the "sibling-chemistry" is right, then I may have my final reason to like this show. I haven't got a show with really believable siblings since Numb3rs.
