Things that shouldn't confuse you about fandom but really do

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not talking, like, the existence of fandom in general, because that ship has sailed and we own that weirdness now. But I'm sure everyone has a pairing, trend, trope, or kink that they just don't get despite their best efforts, and I'm curious. Please try to avoid being bashy if at all possible.

For me in particular? Wing!fic. I don't understand why this is something people want to begin with, and even setting aside the fact that we can probably blame Supernatural or possibly Good Omens for the trend start, I'm not sure why it shows up in most fandoms. Seriously, what the hell.

Anime rap mashups are the best thing ever. Anime rap mashups are my spirit animal

that said, I don't think they're that confusing. It's basically just "people like both rap and anime". If you want to get more specific you can talk about the popularity of grindhouse cinema and kung-fu movies and things like Shogun Assassin in urban areas. But really, it just comes down to a lot of people who like rap thinking that ninjas and Akira are awesome, which is totally rational because ninjas and Akira are freaking awesome.

Or they're being done ironically, in which case it's just because it's funny.

Crossovers because the works have the same actors.

This obsession people have for really fucked up characters. And I don't mean finding them interesting, because I'm just as interested by them. But I mean people who try to excuse all their actions and make them seem almost entirely free of responsibility. On the flip side, they often vilify the good guys and place all the blame on them.

I just don't get it. They'll find excuses for mass genocide but think the worst crime in the universe is picking on said genocidal douchebag.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
That seems really specific. Is that a real fandom?

Re: Things that shouldn't confuse you about fandom but really do

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's bccause most people have personally experienced being picked on, and most people (in fandom) have not personally experienced being victims of mass genocide.

Ack, I don't get this!

I mean, I love fucked-up characters. But it's generally because... They're fucked-up? And I just want to yell at these people that they are doing it WRONG and COMPLETELY MISSING THE POINT. Why like fucked-up characters if you're just going to turn around and argue that they're not really all that fucked-up?

Ashley Williams from Mass Effect gets a lot of hate for being a racist bible thumper.

One of the people crowing about her being racist was going on how sweet Tali was, when I posted out that Tali was racist towards the Geth and supported wiping them out, he said "there's nothing wrong with hating people who drove you off their planet"

I didn't bother pointing out to him that the only reason the Geth drove the Quarians off their planet was because the quarians tried to commit genocide on the Geth in the first place

Antagonistic romance/ slap slap kiss. Of course, that goes in real life as well, but it's mostly relevant in fandom. Whenever two characters don't like each other, especially if they outright dislike each other, I don't see any sexual tension, I can only see people who don't like each other. I never understood how a guy being annoyed by a girl meant he actually liked her.

I think it comes from the hair-pulling/making fun of them third grade type of 'affection showing'.

When you're little and you don't realize that what you feel is ~like~ or ~affection~, you just know you want their attention, so pulling their hair, making fun of them etc, is how you keep that attention on you.

Now to me, this is different from actual bullying/violence/fuck you I hate you type things.

Vampire AUs. Most of the time, it just seems like it's a costume change and the vampireness doesn't have much to do with actual plot.

Icons that are just screenshots of an actor smiling being included in "icon posts."

Also, icon posts on comms. Half the time people spam with them, and there'll be two icons related to the comm in a mix of 100 fandom icons. Just post your two crappy icons and link to where they can be found.

Any sort of AU that involves taking characters who are aliens/wizards/superheroes/robots/time travellers/magical girls/secret agents/etc. and sticking them in mundane settings (high school AU, coffee shop AU, that sort of thing).

whatever happened to blanket scenarios?

why aren't there a million fics about my favorite female characters huddling together to stay warm while stranded in the mountains?

why so many high school au's and not lumberjack au's or apocalypse au's? or noir au's? I would accept a coffeeshop noir au with like, one lumberjack scene. After the apocalypse.

maybe these things exist and I'm just not looking hard enough

I am getting kinda sick of tumblr's tumblriness, I'm not sure if that's a confusing thing or not? I'm just craving some good meta right now. Sorry, this got derailed.

inb4 noodles tells me I have a lumberjack problem
it's just one example okay, they could also be lighthouse keepers

also

A/B/O. If you want to write archaic gender essentialism, why give it a different name and a duplicative societal layer?

In "Welcome to Night Vale" fandom, regarding Cecil: the third eyes, the tentacles, and the tattoos, singly or in combination. It's great if folks like them, but I do. not. get. them. at. all. (I like the narrative tension of Cecil-as-generic-ordinary-everyman contrasted with the weirdness of Night Vale ... and yet I also like the idea that his appearance depends on who's observing him. I CAN BE INCONSISTENT IF I WANT SO THERE.)

People who think fandom revolves around shipping and fanfic.

the fandom darling is NEVER my darling

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
never ever. how does it work? am I just bizarre?
like flippin' Eliot. I freaking love Eliot Spencer, he's a great character and has great relationships with everyone and he's well-acted and shit, but the huge disproportionate representation of him in Leverage fic has started to make me hate him in pure resentment.

also, why isn't there more genderswap in fandom? like, these two characters' relationship works for me but slash doesn't turn me on, I can't be the only one, why is there not more genderswap PWP?

Does it count if it's something I do that I don't get, not something the fandom does? Because there are a whole bunch of fandom-darling M/M pairings that I don't ship, find pretty blah at best and creepy at worst - but which I ship and ship hard if both characters are rule 63'd into ladies. I have no explanation for this.

I don't really see the appeal of wingfic either but it predates Supernatural by a healthy margin. I remember it being a big thing in Lotrips fandom way back when.

Regina Mills/Emma Swan - I don't think there's much chemistry between them, I don't think Jennifer Morrison really has chemistry with anyone in the show.

In fact I don't really think anyone really has any chemistry with anyone else in the show
