Resume advice?

[personal profile] khronos_keeper 2013-10-09 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm tweaking my resume, and I've come across a conundrum. I've had some years of unpaid non-professional work as a laborer on my parents' farm, as well as working as an unofficial assistant to my high school librarian.

Even though they aren't professional, I'm proud of my work, and I think they show that I've been working pretty much my whole life.

Should I keep them on my resume? Take them off? Put them at the end of the work experience section, rather than keep them chronologically at the front?

Help, F!S, what do. :(

I have years of unpaid work as well as a farm laborer and other unofficial work. I put mine under a volunteer section that's separate from professional jobs!

Probably put them last on resume. You can label the years in parenthesis.

Put them in a "volunteer work" section, although if you're out of college then the stuff from high school should probably be off your resume by now.

Keep 'em on and in order if they're remotely relevant to the stuff you're applying for. I had (largely) unpaid experiences doing support volunteer work with LiveJournal and writing/organizing a column on a gaming site for awhile, plus helped develop a GBC game that sadly was never released and thus never got paid. These are the things that got me my current awesome job in web dev, not my years of paid data entry and retail jobs.

If they're not relevant, maybe stick them in a "other experience" section.

If they're not relevant to what you're applying for and you have space, keep them on but at the bottom. If keeping them means everything else is crammed on and shoddy looking, take them off. Because employers will be looking for your total work history (if they look at all) after they look at the things that relate to what they're looking for.

It helps, if you can, to slightly tailor your resume to each place you apply. If the volunteer/non-professional work is relevant to this place, put it in; leave it out if there's no relation to that job.

If you want just one, more general resume, I've heard it recommended* that you list anything you consider significant and say what you learned from it or what your major responsibilities were. I.e., "Librarian's Assistant - bookkeeping and filing".

Or maybe leave it out, and bring it up in the interview.

If you have space to put a volunteer/work experience/intern section I'd put them there, but just remember:

1. Keep your resume to one page only. Every interviewer I've had has said that if it's too long they're not even going to bother to read it.

2. Pertinent info only.

3. References upon request. Don't waste space with every person's info you've ever asked to be a reference.
