Speaking of phobias

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
What is your weirdest phobia out of the ones that have names? (If we go into ones that don't, we'll be here all night.) And how do you react to it?

For me, it's anthophobia. I've had it ever since I can remember (and I can remember flashes from when I was three). It wavers in intensity; sometimes, like now, I can't even stand to look at or hear the names of the things. So you'll have to look it up if you want to know what it is, sorry ^^; It's really less of a fear than an intense revulsion, but the effect is similar enough for everyone else to label it a phobia.

The way it works for me is: I can't stand to look at them, or images of them, or patterns that vaguely resemble them; when something with them accidentally touches me, I have to get the imaginary "residue" off of me by rubbing the affected part against something else; if I see something especially "triggering", I have to try and get all the air out of my lungs and hold it until I move far enough away from the "tainted" air.

The fuckers are EVERYWHERE.

I was wondering the same, actually >>;;;

Luckily (for certain values of luck), I'm a basement nerd with chronic fatigue. Most days I only leave my room to pee, otherwise I'm either asleep or on the computer.

That honest to god is depressing. I'm sorry.

I don't mean to make light of OP's situation, but when I looked it up the first thing I saw was "anthrophobia, the fear of people." and your comment was pretty funny for a few seconds until I saw that it said "Not to be confused with".

I don't have any phobia with a name (I think? If this has a name please someone tell me). But after years of thinking I had a phobia of flying/heights... it turned out it's just there's a special note/pitch that the airplane turbines make on takeoff. It's not the roar of the engine, it's something more subtle, more background-y... and it used to send me into huge panic attacks. Once I realized it was the sound, I started to control myself better and no longer fear getting into a plane.

It got weirder when I realized it was the same pitch/tune/note/whatever in the crying of babies, though.

Edit: The internet tell me is called "Mysophonia". I don't know whether to be relieved I'm not the only one or what.

Augh, mysophonia is such a pain in the arse. I can't be around people who eat "too loudly" because it drives me crazy. The sound of people kissing sets me off, which makes watching TV fun because it's like they ramp up the sound JUST FOR THOSE SCENES.

Oh god I feel you so much D: And I'm sorry the sounds that trigger you are so commonly found. At least mine are mostly avoidable. (And it's one of the things that deeply convinces me that I'll never ever have kids, because how the fuck can you expect to take care of a baby if their crying makes you want to run as far and quickly as possible instead of, y'know, trying to calm them down?)

I've noticed they DO seem to amp up the volume for kissing scenes in series and movies :( You're not wrong there. Wish I could do more than offer you my sympathies.

I don't really like it when people smack their lips whilst eating, there's a few times when I've been in the vicinity of someone who's very loudly smacking their lips.
One time was on a packed bus, guy was right behind me, eating skittles throughout the journey, I wanted to punch him, the noise was that bad

Kissing scenes on TV yes, it does sound like they ramp up the sound. Isn't it possible to kiss without the loud smacking noises? (I'm reminded of a scene in Eastenders (not that I watch that shite, I was in the room when my father (he's obsessed with the shit) was watching it) where Zoe was kissing someone, fucking annoying)

Globophobia, the fear of balloons popping. I think the term is about fear of balloos as a whole, but I'm okay around balloons. But if someone is getting ready to pop one, I run out so fast.

The only phobia I have is Arachnophobia which isn't even remotely odd.

I did however find out what my two other fears phobia names are out of curiosity. Spectrophobia and kinemortphobia. They aren't phobia's for me however, just things that wig me the fuck out.

Re: Speaking of phobias

I'm not sure I'd call it a "phobia", but I've had a fear of wasps & bees since childhood. When I was seven or eight, I was playing in the garden, and I felt something land on my head. I put my hand up to touch it, and got stung.

Since then I go out of my way to avoid bees, wasps, hornets, anything that can fly and sting. But it doesn't stop me from going outside or doing most everyday things, and it's not like I have a panic attack if I encounter one.

So I wouldn't really consider it a phobia, more a strong fear.

So it's more the idea of the pollen being dispersed in the air that frightens you?

I don't know if this would technically be considered a phobia, since I think it was decided it's a neurological disorder somewhere on the OCD scale (?) butttt certain trigger sounds make me have severe fight or flight responses. Really terrible fear or anger, until I am away from the triggering sounds.

You might want to look up on "Mysophonia". What you've said reminds me of my problem with certain sounds too.

Not diagnosed, but experience suggests I have daemonophobia--the fear of demons and/or demonic possession. Not Hollywood or comic book demons like in Supernatural or Buffy, though; they don't bother me, oddly enough.

But movies or shows where the subject is portrayed with any authenticity in the classic Roman Catholic "this person hasn't just been temporarily hijacked by a more or less humanlike intelligence; something is horribly, unnaturally WRONG with them" sense have been known to trigger delayed panic attacks that have kept me up all night in well-lighted rooms.
