I can guarantee you'd have disagreed with yourself when YOU were a baby. And I am both amused and disturbed by the number of people who seem to forget that they once were infants, and depended for their very survival on other people NOT thinking the way they do now.

OP here

No. I feel the same way about myself as a baby. I'm equal to everyone else. We are the ones who grew up and survived long enough to become people. We have that status now. The ones who are still babies have not. We are realized potential and they are only potential. That's the difference.

What, you think you've somehow earned greater consideration because you had the sheer luck NOT to fall into the care of people like you? Like it takes some kind of superior skill and cunning to not be left in a burning house by someone who'd rather save the dog at age one? Whatever man, I can't even begin to express how fucked up that is.

No, and I don't know where you're getting that from. There's nothing about "earning," either. Nobody "earns" things. They grow and develop. Everyone does this, given enough time and good health.

I believe all people are equal. I just don't consider a newborn baby a person yet. I consider you greater than babies, for sheer factor of you being able to have this conversation with me.

Do you believe that not being a person is a horrible thing? Even if I don't consider a baby a person, they are still a living animal and I would respect them as much as I do any other animal. I certainly don't abuse animals and I treat them well, because they are other living things like me. They aren't people, however.

So what if your a low functioning cognitively impaired person? Does that mean they aren't people? Curious

OP here

Depends on how low.

Uh

Why does it matter that we were once babies? We're not now. And we just don't happen to like them. It definitely doesn't mean we go around killing them, or not saving them (the fire example was a hypothetical used in a lot of situations and frankly I don't think it saving people from a fire would pan out the way most people imagine it). Everybody is good at different things. There are some people who like babies and are suited to taking care of them, and there are some people who would just really rather not hold one or look at videos of them.

And no, we're not stupid, we know how biology works. Also I'm sure there were people around when I was a baby who thought "That thing isn't cute and I wouldn't save it from a burning building." I'm not too shaken up about it.

OP here

I don't understand the immediate assumption that "I don't care about babies" = "omg abuser" either. I'm not going to hurt a baby. I'm not going to neglect a baby. Just because I can firmly say that I'd rescue my best friend from a fire than my coworker, doesn't mean I'm going to abuse or neglect my coworker, or even hate her! She simply has a lower priority ranking than my best friend.

You do have a point, but you should recognize how saying stuff about how you'll recuse a puppy over a baby sounds crazypants.

OP here

Why do you think I posted this anon in the unpopular opinions thread?

It makes sense to me, but of course I understand that people are going to get mad over it. I have noticed that humans have the tendency to put other human beings above all and everything else, simply because they are also human beings and nothing more, you know. Species loyalty runs deep in people :)

AYRT - So, the OP has agreed with me twice in this thread and I just wanna throw it out there that I don't agree with them on the babies not being people thing. A kitten is a baby cat. A puppy is a baby dog. How is a baby person not a person? Not being able to recognize them as such sounds more like a flaw of the OP's, not in babies, but I'm not an expert. Anyway. I honestly have no fucking clue what I would do in the fire situation. Probably grab the baby and try to chase the dog out or coax it to come with me? But it depends on how close I was to either, and if I myself am capable of getting out, and whether or not the dog already instinctively escaped. Hell maybe the dog decided to save the baby and leave me to burn. I'm not a dog person any more than I am a baby person, and dogs can probably tell that. See? This is why I don't like the fire scenario in arguments.

Not OP

I think OP is saying that there is a difference between "human" and "person." A baby human is obviously a human, but "person" implies something more than belonging to a particular species. An AI that was capable of sufficiently sophisticated learning and reasoning and had attained self-awareness might be considered a "person." OP is saying that they don't see babies as having achieved personhood yet; it's not a "failure to recognize" anything.

As an aside, I don't know whether I agree with the OP on that score or not; I think personhood is a fuzzy concept.
