Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I can't see or relate to infants and babies as people. If someone posts pics on FB of their newborn, I only feel a vague revulsion toward it like I would any other ugly animal.

Killing a baby is still murder in my eyes of course, but I wouldn't consider it nearly as bad a thing as if it had been a grown person that had been murdered instead. Still bad, just not as bad. It wasn't a person yet, imo. It had the potential to be, eventually, but not yet.

If given the choice, I would likely choose to save a puppy over a baby out of a fire.

The reason being that puppies are actually cute

What. The. Fuck. Save a dog that will live for maybe 10 years. Or a baby that will live to be 70.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you're saying, but I don't know if I would use that as a standard. What if instead of a dog and a baby, there were two babies, and you knew one was going to live to be ten and the other to be 70? Why is a longer potential life more valuable to you?

I was with you until the last line. I'd save 'em both.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
OP here

I'd save both if given the option. I meant if I had to choose one or the other.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I'd definitely choose to save a puppy - or a dog of any age - rather than a baby.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to be less intimidated/freaked out by babies. I really don't find them cute and the thought of taking care of one scares me. But I try to think that as young human beings, they are a significant population in the world and it's ridiculous to think like that. Newborns are still creepy but I'm trying and finding older ones can be okay.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with your entire comment. At best, babies are boring, and at worst they're disgusting and really off-putting. It's the worst thing in the world because I have a newborn niece, and people keep shoving her at me like I have to like her just because I'm her aunt and she's a baby. Like...no. Talk to me when she's, like, five, and has a personality.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
OP here

"Talk to me when she's, like, five, and has a personality."

Yes. Until a human being has a personality, I have a hard time seeing them as people. I find parents, especially new parents, lose all sense of perspective regarding babies: theirs is special and unique because it's theirs! Look at this new and unique thing that their baby does, which is special because it's theirs!, and they forget there are a hundred million babies that are basically interchangeable with it to everybody else.

Talk to me when she's, like, five, and has a personality.

The problem with that is that babies/kids aren't devoid of personalities one day and instantly gain them the next. You sort of have to put in that leg work from the very day they're born.

I can guarantee you'd have disagreed with yourself when YOU were a baby. And I am both amused and disturbed by the number of people who seem to forget that they once were infants, and depended for their very survival on other people NOT thinking the way they do now.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
OP here

No. I feel the same way about myself as a baby. I'm equal to everyone else. We are the ones who grew up and survived long enough to become people. We have that status now. The ones who are still babies have not. We are realized potential and they are only potential. That's the difference.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Why does it matter that we were once babies? We're not now. And we just don't happen to like them. It definitely doesn't mean we go around killing them, or not saving them (the fire example was a hypothetical used in a lot of situations and frankly I don't think it saving people from a fire would pan out the way most people imagine it). Everybody is good at different things. There are some people who like babies and are suited to taking care of them, and there are some people who would just really rather not hold one or look at videos of them.

And no, we're not stupid, we know how biology works. Also I'm sure there were people around when I was a baby who thought "That thing isn't cute and I wouldn't save it from a burning building." I'm not too shaken up about it.

People like you scare me. This isn't the first time I've heard this, and it just implies a complete lack of empathy and humanity.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Why? Could you elaborate on that?

Assuming you could only save one, is someone who would leave a puppy to die more moral and empathetic and "human"? Why? Could you elaborate on that too?

No, it implies a preference for puppies over babies. There's nothing innately wrong with seeing more value in one helpless creature over another.

The puppy is a baby too. If your logic is as exactly as you're presenting it shouldn't you prefer to save a dog over a baby? ...except that puppy/dog isn't and doesn't have the potential to be a person either. Are you sure you don't just really dislike babies?

Do you have any other ranking systems? Would you save an eighty year old over a twenty year old because they have more of being a person under their belt?

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
OP here

A puppy is a baby too. Since both are babies, I would rescue the puppy since I really like puppies and am mostly neutral on and disinterested in babies.

I would rescue the twenty year old over the eighty year old because they are both already people, and the twenty year old, barring accident and et cetera, has more lifetime ahead of them.

I would rescue the 20 year old, over the baby.
I would rescue the 80 year old, over the baby.
Both the 20 and 80 year old are in a separate category from the baby and the puppy.

So, when does someone become a "person"?

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

It depends on the person.

But, a newborn is all potential. That's kind of the point. And if you don't think babies have personalities then you probably haven't been around them very much.

Yeah, the baby could grow up to be a terrible person, but they deserve the chance to grow and change and learn and make decisions, good or bad, just like every other person, no matter how old they are. Or, at least, that's what I think.
