I understand the difference between a puppy and a baby, trust me. It's not hard.

What I was asking was why does picking the baby make one more "human" though? What is innately "human" about choosing the baby? What is innately sociopathic about saving a dog?

Honest to god, I'm not a sociopath. I would never leave a baby to die or intentionally hurt or neglect one in any way. If forced into the situation of leave the baby or leave the puppy, though? I'd leave the baby. That's all.

It's human because you're saving your fellow human. Not that hard.

I didn't say saving a dog is sociopathic. If a dog was in danger, I would save the dog. We're talking about a crazy hypothetical situation where you have to choose between the lives of a baby and a dog. In every case, I would pick the baby.

I don't know enough about psychology to say you're a sociopath, but I find your mindset really creepy and disturbing. You're not going to change my mind.

Sure thing, and you won't change mine, either.

I don't believe in deciding moral weight simply by way of what something is born as, especially if said thing hasn't even had the time to fully become what it will eventually be. A caterpillar is not a butterfly. A tadpole is not a frog.

There are animals who deserve to live far more than some humans, and something simply being human is not enough to make them worth more than every other type of living creature to me.

How about you rescue the baby because someone else loves it more than the puppy or the baby has the potential to love/care for someone else in the future than the dog?

Exactly. If you had a choice between saving a couple's puppy and their baby, they would be much less sad if the puppy died. The fact of the matter is that people love other people more than animals. Nothing is going to change that.

This is assuming things that are not in the scenario.

What if the baby's parents are dead? Who is going to care for it? What if it has no relatives? It'll cost people more to take care of it for 18 years and may not even end up a good person in the end.

What if the baby has no one and was going to die in a year because of a genetic disorder, and the puppy is young, healthy, and has owners that love it and would love it for 10+ more years? What if the dog is the sole companion of a frail 90 year old lady and it's the last remaining part of her family there is? What if the dog died, she'd die of heartbreak too?

You can extend any kind of scenario to this, once you start.

In that case, I would be too busy freaking out about the situation that this malevolent trickster god had put me in to worry about the puppy and the baby.

OP here

Pretty much. I mean if we're going to get into potential, a baby who grows up into one wonderful human being has more potential to do good than a very good dog. On the flip side, one terrible human being has much more potential to destroy things than even a very bad dog. That's why I'd rather leave the "but it could turn out so good/so bad!!" out of the equation.

Jeez, exactly. I was going off the general assumption that babies live longer, are more beloved, and are much more emotionally complex than puppies 99% of the time.

As long as we're sticking some epic bullshit in this, what if the puppy grows up and mauls several people to death?
