ROFLMBO. You should do it. It's quite amusing.

21's OP

(Anonymous) 2007-10-15 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's incredibly tempting. XDDD But I really DO like Fakir/Ahiru and Mytho/Rue,and we've built up stuff towards thoses relationships...so to have them suddenly become gay lovers would be too much. XDD Maybe something in their background, but...in current canon? Probably wouldn't work. Sadly.

37. Also, agreed. He's seriously a work of art. People just hate him on default. I used to hate him too (and Mello, for that matter), but now they're two of my favorites.

37!

[identity profile] rinnia.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I adore Near. He's my favorite manga character of all time. Glad you came around - he needs lots of love to counter all the hate.

For #18

Do you have a BA degree?

Get one. And then get your TESOL/TEFL from a place like this one (http://www.oxfordseminars.ca/Pages/Teach/teach_dates.php) (look! They offer courses in the USA!)

Go teach English in Japan. Some contracts will even pay for your flight and your housing.

18, if you read this, do some research into the company that you are getting into.

That said, to the OP and anyone else: I have episodes if you want them. I'm trying to keep the love alive.

I feel the same way regarding most shoujo and shounen (I guess I'm just not lucky enough to encounter a really, really good one), but for some reason I can't seem to stop myself from reading more of this series. It's not great by any stretch yet it's addicting, like reading a trashy romance novel.

Re: 34

[identity profile] athenaltena.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's a good analogy of it. I think VK just has that effect on people, since someone who works at an anime store near where I live said that people who usually don't like twice at it are waiting for the new volumes on the edge of their seat. Must be something to it.

10. Oh gosh, what happened in the Saiyuki fandom? I never thought wankage could come from that series.

2. Your argument is compelling.

9. Playing successfully against canon is part of the fun of fandom, IMHO.

18. Good luck, honey. I understand.

19. AMEN AND HALLELUJAH, SIGNED, ETC.

30. Moses' relationship to Yahweh makes this a very "hmm, I'd read that" idea rather than "OMG WHAT THE HECK" for me. I wonder if that's what you'd be exploring... do you have a newsletter?

35. Can you reach out to the other members of the project and let them know what's going on with you? Maybe they can help get your creative juices flowing again? I feel like any group project worth its salt would include the feature of writers being there for each other in such situations. If I was writing with/for a group, I'd want to be able to do that for someone.

35 OP

(Anonymous) 2007-10-15 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm the only writer. And you are right, I probably could. I probably will if I ever get the time. But it isn't a lack of creativity (maybe it is, I don't know?) as much of a lack of motivation... if that makes sense.

Like I said, I normally don't like slash, (to the point of near hatred for some pairings), but...dang Fakir and Mytho are hard not to ship. And I seriously DO love Fakir/Ahiru and Mytho/Rue, too, I'm not lying when I say that.

7. While Light is in theory the "bad guy" here, he's in fact as much of a victim to the note as all those people he killed. Not to substantiate any of his actions, or the fact that he is such an overconfident, smug, immature, pretentious bastard (then again how many people were disappointed and bored when he reverted back to nice Light for a short while there?) prone to swimming lessons. His objective was still what most people would feel is an ideal world, even if the ways far from justified the means.

However, it kind of annoys me when people don't take time to understand that Death Note isn't trying to define what good, evil, black, white or justice is. The story was definitely designed to make you think of all those things, though. Not following it at least somewhat objectively -- like you would with a book -- ruins the experience. Point was to illustrate that everyone has their own take on justice, just like everyone has their own take on the characters and the story. It's not saying Light is Right, nor is it claiming he's 100% off track.

Personally, I just enjoyed seeing how easily a fairly “normal” human being with an outlook on life that most people relate to can be ruined by their own actions in a short period of time. There are plenty if characters out there who are popular despite being assholes, but sadly in Death Note we never really get to see a different or more "human" side to any of these because it is such a plot-centric story.

11. Tsuna, Sena, Sora.

37. Don't even get me started on all the unjustified Near-hate. 99% of the time it's either "he's boring" or "he's a cheap L knock-off" which kind of shows how difficult it was for people to understand him. Or maybe they just had a hard time paying attention due to the infamous WALLS OF TEXT. The rushed last arc of Death Note didn't exactly give room for any decent character development, either.

Most of the time you just had to guess your way to what characters went through emotionally (like try to read their minimal body-language) and what happened in-between the big gaps of their appearance in chapters. Just look at Mello. Ohba was only devoted to the plot while Obata was paid to illustrate. This sucks for fans who usually get attached to characters and expect some reward in return for following the story.

(then again how many people were disappointed and bored when he reverted back to nice Light for a short while there?)

Not me! XDD This'll sound odd, but I'm a fangirl of him that way. He seems like a genuinely nice guy. That's what makes Death Note such a tragedy to me--if he hadn't picked up that notebook, he probably would've become an investigator and perhaps TRULY have been the next L and have a normal, uncrazy life.

1. Even though I really think it's fictional, Tolkien's detail was so rich I sometimes imagine the same thing.

3. That's really, really awesome. I'm happy for you!

7. I love the series, and I think happy-not-evil Light is cute, but normal!Light IS an egotistical ass. XDDD I don't think you're really supposed to be rooting for him.

12. That's a ship I haven't heard of! Although I'm not really involved in the fandom. I'm not really a yaoi fangirl, but I'm curious as to why...

I just wanna say one more thing about 18: why Japan? I mean, I get it if you're of Japanese descent and/or have relatives/friends there, then it'd sorta make sense to go, but if not, why? I mean, even if you current life is hell on earth, couldn't you just move to the opposite side of your country? Japan isn't the most wonderful country in the world, even if anime and stuff comes from there.
Oh well, have fun.
(p.s. if you still really wanna live there, maybe you should try and go to college there if you can...)

18

[identity profile] pts.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, honey.

I don't even know what to say to you.

A friend of mine once said that being in Japan was like being in love with a charming, charismatic drunk. The good times are amazing but the bad times are so, so bad, and no matter how much you'll want them to change, they never will. Not for you, and not for me.

I lived in Japan for two years; two of the worst and best years of my life. Everything good you think or imagine about it is roughly true. The downside: Just think of all those times you're never taken seriously or valued where you are. Then multiply that by ten. Then add in the fact that you'll never truly hate it, because it's so, so beautiful, so much beauty everywhere.

I'm glad I'm not there anymore, yet I'm always looking for that opportunity to go back.

Oh Japan. I wish I could quit you.

Re: 18

[identity profile] atelierlune.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I often think of Japan as something like Estella from Dickens' Great Expectations - rich, alluring, graceful, lovely, but unable to love or return love.

Whatever the metaphor, my own personal experience is similar - Japan is infinitely beautiful and exciting but also cold and lonely.

Hate to break it to you, but you're not the only fan. I know of at least two others, besides myself, who love this series like crazy.

I'm not the OP but...

[identity profile] kusanivy.livejournal.com 2007-10-15 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
... I think Gawl fans just tend to be very quiet about it. I've come across quite a few people who love the series but there just doesn't seem to be a very active fandom for it.
