He is an egotistical asshat-- actually, that term is far too mild. Um. Egomaniacal doucheface? Same thing, essentially, but yeah. I think it's possible to enjoy a series while still hating the main character, but. All depends on the circumstances. |D;; I wouldn't worry so much about how your friends'll react to you saying you hate him, though-- I mean, I happen to like Light, but his asshattery is kind of freaking hard to ignore. It's actually one of the reasons why I like him-- HE'S INTERESTING IN A SOCIOPATHIC, CRAZY BASTARD KINDA WAY, OKAY D:-- but that could just be me.

For me the inability to get into Death Note was not so much disliking Light - I did, severely - but also that I just wasn't particularly attached to any of the supporting cast either.

Had I just LOVED the other characters I'm sure I would have like it more but Light's asshattery combined with no particular love on my part for the others made the story fall flat for me.

It's not that I think it's a bad manga or anything, it was wasn't for me. (And now every time someone tells me that they love Light and he's so awesome I sort of want to thump my head against a wall. -_-; )

No one else is saying it, so I will: Japan is not the mecca of civilisation. It is not the promised land. It is a country with problems, its citizens hate non-Japanese people with a passion, and they are allowed to display racism against you whenever and however they want, because it's not against the law. You might think you'll be a lot happier there, but if you really need to 'get away from your problems,' then you should seriously consider somewhere else. This is not a flame, I am being absolutely serious. You go there as a tourist and you get the royal treatment. As soon as you go there to live, hell comes crashing down on your shoulders. Consider the UK or Australia.
