What Does Your Family Call You

(Anonymous) 2013-10-13 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
A while back I asked what everyone called their parents and grandparents and that was pretty fun. This time I wanna know what your parents call you. Not that I'm asking to hear anything overly personal like your real name, but I'm curious as to what pet names are common in your family.

I'm Russian Jewish, so aside from ending my sister and my first names with -atchka and -leh, my mother calls us "kissa" (kitty) or "ketzseleh" (kitten), because she really loves cats. Sometimes when she's talking to our actual cat in Russian I have no idea which one of us she's talking to.

My father calls us both "Momeleh", which is Yiddish for "little mother", and a common term of endearment. Our grandmother has a different Yiddish accent, so she calls us "Mameleh".

So what about you? Are you a "sweetheart" or a "tiny scoundrel" or "half-pint" or what have you?

"Sweetie", "sweetie-pie" and sometimes "honey-bunny" but that's usually in a certain "I'm at the end of my rope" tone of voice.

Everyone calls me by the first letter in my name. My dad also calls me "little rat" a lot because I'm constantly pulling tricks on him and generally being a dick.

When we were little, my dad would call us a 'dickens', meaning mischievous. Occasionally he'd call me 'little Hilda', because i looked like his mother, Hilda.

Otherwise, just our names.

Some endearing names my family call me are "pumpkin" and "munchkin." But usually just my first name.

These days they pretend I don't exist - so nothing. But they used to call me by a shorter nickname very closely related to my name.

No pet names. But Ash (short version of my name) and Captain Floppy (I got a big feet for a girl) from my siblings.

Nobody in my family calls each other pet names. We just don't, and I'm not comfortable when other people call me them either, especially if they are younger than 40 and/or I don't know them well. My mom called me "honey" once and it was when I was in the hospital.

My mother doesn't use any pet names or anything like that. It's not really her style. My father uses a lot of different nonsense names, though.

My Dad calls me sausage, cabbage, turnip, sprout or sproglet. Mum calls me chickpea ... Lots of food names, not sure what I should take from that.

My mum calls me either by my real nickname or 'little monster', 'nail to my coffin', 'fatty' and other kinds of more or less endearing names... depending on the situation and how much we aggravated each other today. (also, fun fact, I have always had a perfectly average figure... go figure the frequent fatty remarks).

When I was little the matriarch of my neighborhood started calling me Mighty Mite (Might?) and it amused everyone else so it caught on. I've been told secondhand it was because as a toddler I was precociously determined to help the adults with work they thought too difficult for me and in the habit of policing the playground against the older kids but I was never told the story of exactly when and why she started calling me that from anyone who was there.

Just my first name, usually shortened into a sort of nickname. My uncle occasionally calls me munchkin.

My mum calls me "Mouseduck" and my Grandmother calls me "Sparrowleg" (they both sound cuter in my native language). The rest of the family just shortens my name.

Everyone in my family calls me Renate, except the youngest ones who tends to call me 'nate because the Re sound is hard to do when you are just learning to talk.

My little brother called me Dadda* when he was a little boy, he went by Diddy though that was a bit more logical as his first name starts with a D, he still does to a degree, but he is a teenager now and he is too cool for pet names.

Pet names are really not that widespread in Norway, especially not in families, except for the youngest ones, so I assume people called me RenateMor* and/or RenateMin* because those are the two common ones... Oh and LilleMor*.

*how on earth he got Dadda out of Renate is the big question
*Mother, in Norwegian, but it takes on a slightly different meaning when you add it to the end of a childs name
*Mine, and again same as with mother, not exactly the same as in English.
*Little Mother and again translating something directly from Norwegian to English changes some of the meaning.

My parents just call me by my name.

My relatives have some variation, whether my old nickname, squirt, or with my Oma, my name in German.

My parents, brothers, etc. call me by my name. No nicknames or anything. My dad calls me "chick" or "chicky" sometimes, but it's not really something that happens often.

My dad will call me all sorts of cutesy names like "my angel" and stuff or just a shortened version of my name which I haaaated as a teenager because I just thought it was super cheesy (I still do, but I've come to terms with the fact that my dad is just an enormously cheesy person).

My mom calls me "Missy" and she used to call me "hun" when I was younger, and will also often refer to me by a nickname which basically means "stinky" in Thai because when I was little, I hated having to wash my hair.

I don't really go by any shorted forms of my name (Rebecca). One that's actually started fairly recently is a few of my friends occasionally calling me R, because I always just sign emails -R. It is kind of odd hearing that aloud, but in a text or email it seems much more normal (like, "I'll carpool with Jess and R.") I don't really know how much I like it aloud... I guess I've just never had a real nickname before.

I did have a friend who used to call me Turtle (from my last name) sometimes and I always got so irritated when she did it, haha! We had characters we played together so I was also Sharon for a few years and she was Jewel. I have a mug I decorated at her sister's birthday party that I keep change in now that says "SHARON" and it confuses people to this day!

We're Southern, so there's a good scattering of the occasional endearment (Sweetheart, sweetie, honey, sugar) but mostly just our names. ALTHOUGH...my Mom often gets confused somewhere between thinking the word and having it actually come out her mouth, so I've been called by all my siblings' names...and the cat's name...and my aunt's name...lol. "Sandy...John...Rasc--argh, hey, YOU!" XD

My mother calls me "mein Schatz mein Spatz mein Spiegelei, did you" (my dear, my sparrow, my egg yolk) when she wants to remind me of something.
It rhyms in my language, so it's pretty cute.
Otherwise just sparrow or dear.

My family usually shortens my name to "Dani", mom usually calls me "gorda" ("fatty") - I had been stick-thin all my life (until this year), it's just an usual pet name in Spanish. Amusingly enough, Dad calls me "mi flaca" ("my thin one"). Both pet names are common in Latin America and don't mean a thing regarding the actual size of the person.

One of my grannies calls me "mi perrita" ("my puppy-dog"). Chileans are VERY prone to animal-related nicknames and slang.

Last time my mom was angry with me, which was yesterday, she called me "perra de porquería" (which would amount to "dirt-made bitch"). *le sigh*

Pumpkin or Wheezie from my parents, Twinkie from my brother (think Moe from Calvin and Hobbes). XD

My bowling balls are actually engraved like that, one Twinkie, one Wheezie.

Wheezie comes from being an asthmatic with the middle name Louise. XD
