vent about tumblr

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I love Tumblr but I have to admit some of the people on it piss me off. Especially the fandom people who are all "YES we ruined another non fandom post" and "OMG DON'T YOU KNOW THIS IS FROM X, DELETE YOUR TUMBLR AND DIE" and the slacktivism. Oh dear GOD the slacktivism.

I once saw a girl on her OWN BLOG start a text post about how she hated people saying "male tears" because she's known guys who've been through things like rape and abuse and eating disorders. and she got a bunch of angry people attacking her for "derailing" (if anything they were the ones derailing it.) and saying "blah blah you're probably lying but something something "men's own fault". " (the girl wasn't even saying it was any side's 'fault' just "dude....dismissing and mocking someone's experiences because of their gender is shitty" .

Also I remember one person passively aggressively saying "I'm sorry male victims of abuse that your stories are used by MRA's you deserve better" (though from this crowd anyone who disagrees is "OMG MRA". I couldn't help but roll my eyes because from the crowd who says "lol ____ tears" that doesn't mean much"

Don't get me wrong I believe in feminism and I believe in equality. But it's embarrassing to see people being so spiteful about it.

Never heard "male tears" before, but "manpain" makes me fucking rage, and I'm not even male (in sex or gender).

It's usually in the form of 'white tears'

Re: vent about tumblr

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-10-16 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? Granted I haven't seen it used for a while but I thought it referred to that hokey feeling tragic backstory male protagonists are given to make them seem brooding, brow furrowing, and deep. Sort of what writers are trying to accomplish when they fridge women and whatnot.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree also I felt kinda "ick" when I saw an oft reblogged statement by someone on tumblr that "hating men has no consequences I could be the worst misandrist in the world and it would make me nothing but an unpleasant party guest whereas hating women is harmful".

I mean I know that right now in a way it's true and it IS like that, but....at the same time I find it idiotic and in a way irresponsible to say "my hate has no consequences". Because hate may start out seeming that way....but if it is fostered enough and encouraged it grows.

Besides...hate doesn't solve a damn thing. If we're actually going to get PAST sexism...we need to get past "men versus women" because that is the ROOT of sexism. It's idiotic to think you're "fighting sexism" by hating the other sex.

That said I do not deny that things are still very difficult for women in the world and there's a lot of issues to be fought.

I've never seen the phrase "male tears" before. I'm a little confused about it.

The thing about Tumblr is you have to learn to limit your circle, block people freely, and ignore a large percentage of the user base. And not to take any of it seriously.

Okay I actually don't get the whole fandom ruins posts things (Not the blog, the blog is hilarious). No one can ruin a post because if you don't like what someone says about something they reblogged you just... reblog it without their contribution. How is the original post "ruined"? It's still available for comment-free reblogs.

You have to realize that there are ton of people on tumblr who want to be "tumblr famous." But rather than hone a talent like writing, drawing, singing, crafting or what not, they use their blogs as pseudo-political soap boxes in order to gain followers. And the biggest way to gain followers is to be obnoxious and militant. And that works on the both sides of the spectrum. The radical far right and the radical far left. So, you have people trolling tumblr looking for posts like the girl's above post to use to bring in followers and likes to their tumblr by crucifying said posts. Sad thing is, it works. It always works. So other people see this and do the same thing. And so on and so forth. You wind up with a whole army of "tumblr activists" who say they are activists but when ever you ask them anything are quick to spit out, "It's not my job to educate you," because in a way they are right. They aren't there to educate people. They are there to collect followers like Pokemon.

I once saw someone on Tumblr ranting about how offensive and hurtful it is for Westerners to use words like 'kawaii', which lose all of their deep, culturally important nuances when removed from Japanese things like gothic lolita fashion.

...You know, gothic lolita fashion, which is massively influenced by old European clothing styles.

I couldn't believe how many reblogs that pile of steaming idiocy got.

Some of those people make me think that they'd rather ignore the fact that there are abused/raped/body dysphoric men out there because then those issues stop being things that are ~unique to women~. It forces them to admit men suffer from the patriarchy too, which they don't want to do because it "derails" from the men vs. women dichotomy their whole stance is built on.

damn, just unfollow and follow better people. I mostly follow blogs which are content based (instead of personal blogs), or follow the personal content tags + a few people I like.

It's what you make out of it, although it takes some effort, yes.

Honestly, I'm too lazy for tumblr. I used to keep up with it well enough for my fandom, but there's so many whingy personal posts, Loki fans, over the top SJW bullshit and 'ppl whO THInk its cool to type lieK DIS' that it gets tiring. I really ought to work on pruning my following list, but that requires me to last on Tumblr for more than like 5 minutes - which is usually when I get bored/tired of it and close my app.

Also, I can barely go on the site on my computer so no Tumblr Savior or whatever else for me. I'm stuck with my iPhone app.

Apparently tumblr's teen user base grew 19% last month:

There are plenty of sane mature people with good taste on tumblr, just be careful who you follow....

My dash has lately been clogged with people complaining about queer allies apparently not being allies in the correct way and how they should all just sit down and shut up or whatever. And while I can see where some people who call themselves allies can be annoying (like during Coming Out Week with people being like "Tee hee, I'm coming out as an ally" yeah, no) I also find myself thinking that, y'know, if you're in the minority you kinda need allies from the majority and you know what's not a great way to get allies? Constantly telling the ones you have to shut up and that they're doing it wrong. Maybe spend less time sniping at your allies and more focusing on, say, the people who are actually against you instead? And I can't help but wonder if somewhere there are actual real-world activists ( as opposed to your usual Tumblr slacktavists) who are reading this stuff and facepalming "Please stop driving away the people who agree with us, thanks, you're not exactly helping here."

If this post had been made a few months back I would have complained about Confusedtree but he's not even there anymore. And I'm still not completely over how that ended up going down. I mean, I was hoping people would get tired of his shitty jokes and holier-than-thou attitude and he'd fade away, not that he would end up being a sexual harasser.

People on tumblr are so quick to dogpile on every single person, man. I'll see a tumblr post where someone made an ass of themselves or something and when I go to their tumblr they had to abandon their tumblr bc they were likely getting all sorts of hate.
Not to mention their sense of blind mobbing on shit that many times turns out to be completely wrong.

Welcome to tumblr. Where every single white person alive is evil and are out to get all non-whites, where straight, cis-gendered women can attack other women for being straight and cisgendered, and where labels are like badges that make your page prettier

I'm only beginning to spend most of my time on Tumblr and it's kind of thrilling for me to be able to see the female-majority version of an assholish internet community. I've mostly been exposed to the male-majority version - you know, like Reddit or Cracked - so the contrast is kind of fascinating to me.
