FB is unnerving

(Anonymous) 2013-10-21 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I just said this on FB so I'm not sure why I'm saying it here, but I find it unnerving how everyone on my friends list is so eager to share fake conspiracies and missing children and do stupid Breast Cancer "awareness" stuff, but when something happens that a share might actually be good for, they're silent.

What kind of thing are you thinking of specifically? Not sure exactly what you mean.

This is...kind of cryptic. I get that conspiracy stuff can be annoying, but what's wrong with spreading the word on missing children? And why is awareness in quotes? I'm kind of confused right now...

nayrt

Well, sometimes the missing children information is inaccurate or outdated. I've seen some that were just plain old fakes. God only knows why someone would do that, but there you go. *shrugs*

As for breast cancer awareness, there's a growing sentiment that breast cancer gets the lion's share of attention compared to other diseases, even ones that affect a greater percentage of the population. And then there's a legitimate dissatisfaction with the pink ribbon campaign (which seems to be more about marketing their "brand" than actually funding cancer research) and bullshit campaigns like "Save the boobies!" that focus on precious, precious ta-tas instead of, you know, lives.

Basically, FB is like the early days of the internet when everyone forwarded crappy chain letters and urban legends incessantly, only it's 2013.

NAYRT but breast cancer awareness is a stupid movement. Everyone's aware it's a thing, and a thing that sucks, for that matter. Liking pink ribbons on Facebook isn't going to save anyone's breasts at this point in time.

Nothing wrong with sharing missing children or cancer awareness. Can you give examples of what you mean?

Well, for example a girl's been found in a Roma camp, and nobody's mentioned it even though there's, you know, actually information. Meanwhile they keep posting urban legends found on snopes about kids who aren't actually missing, and often the posts they're sharing make it... kind of obvious they're fake to begin with.

And there's nothing wrong with breast cancer awareness. It's when people say things like "if you care about breast cancer awareness, post the color of your bra!" That irks me. So my point is that people will share things if everyone else is doing them, but they're hesitant to otherwise.

Gotcha. The bra thing is stupid. I've actually seen posts about the girl kidnapped by the Romani (that's how I first heard about it) and it's been shared. But not as much as other stuff, you're right.

Late but...the thing with breast cancer is that it tends to get the lion's share of attention these days despite everyone knowing it's a [sucky] thing, so spreading "awareness" that it exists [which is generally the most you can say about the vast majority of fb posts that involve it] doesn't do anything, where as dong posts about other - equally, if not more, life threatening diseases - get ignored because they aren't in vogue.

And before the "But they might not know!" - true. But there's still little point to a lot of the posts that are supposedly about breast cancer*.

*I say supposedly since they usually end up reading as "Look how caring I am since I mention supporting getting rid of a disease!" than anything else.

I don't know about unnerving but I find it incredibly annoying when people post photos they've taken of other people doing the wrong thing, and then add a comment like "Look what we saw this bastard do, how sad/bad/wrong, if you see them out and about, be sure to revile them," but not ONCE do they inform the authorities about what happened. Case in point: a friend shared a photo of a person 'walking' their dog from inside their car driving down the road, with license place clearly shown and everything. By the time I saw the photo it was 2 days after the event, and no one had called the RSPCA or anything like that. In fact, when I went to the original poster, all they had was a smug comment about how they'd gone viral. Stuff like THAT is what really gets me angry.

I get tired of the "Go through all these complicated steps so FB can't use your shit/etc etc" crap that shows up now and then, when it's all stuff that's been debunked by snopes more than five years ago and it just comes back every now and then.
