Uh, PRETTY SURE the article full of quotes from the organization said "men aren't volunteering" not "nobody wants to leave their kids with men." Also, given that there are so many boys in the program WAITING TO BE MATCHED pretty much makes this a bit of a bullshit argument.

Stella_down is most likely saying that the "omg, he's a guy who's involved with children; he must be a pedophile!" thing is why men don't sign up.

Why do you say boys need to have male role models?

(Not trolling, I swear. I'm just curious.)

Not Op and girls do too, actually.

Boys have someone who is 'like them' to be a role model and girls learn to be able to accurately judge and trust men. It's still good for kids to have good adult contact with men and women.

Men and women teach children in different ways and structure their lives differently. Single father's have been shown to have more order in their and their child's daily lives. Men teach language differently than women; Women are more likely to baby talk where men use full sentences. Men allow their kids to do things that expand their boundaries where women tend to be more protective. Women (especially single mothers) take their kids to the doctor more.

That's true--and it's a big problem for guys in education--but I really don't think people signing their sons up for Big Brothers have a problem with their sons' Big Brothers being male. This is a self selecting group.

A bigger problem might be that guys aren't volunteering because they themselves are afraid of looking like pedophiles. What if people start freaking out because they're close but not related? Less likely, but: what if the kid or the kid's parent accuses them of something?

Yeah, it's messed up.

I disagree with Rosin's thesis though (I have to admit I haven't read it; I'm going off the amazon description and similar stuff I've read). I wouldn't say women are 'ahead.' Girls of a certain economic class are just doing better in school, largely because school punishes anyone who isn't good at sitting still for hours at a time. But women excel in education only to be smacked down by culture. The fact that some female teachers are punishing boys for that culture doesn't mean the culture isn't there. I'm worried that we're just building another feminine mystique based on working hard but not being "bitchy" about it.

I so agree with that. Girls are doing better in school than boys, yes, but once they get into higher education or fields they're still more disadvantaged than boys.

but once they get into higher education

Depends entirely on the discipline. I can say we don't seem to be disadvantaged at all in history, aside from the normal it's-hard-to-have-kids-before-tenure issue. Most humanities seem similar.

(anecdotal evidence) My dad's a professor of computer science, and in his university at least they have basically equal numbers of male and female Ph.D students.

True - but that's only if they *stay* in academia. Once you graduate, even if you're in a field that technically falls under "humaniteies" you can have some serious issues.

Depends on the humanities. Philosophy in particular I've heard horror stories about, at least at the graduate level.

My father retired from being a teacher a few years ago and all the male teachers basically always made sure that they were never alone with any student at any time because of the pedophilia/molestation claim risks. (Many of the women did this as well but the risk didn't seem as high for them as it did for the men)

I've worked in schools, and we are straight up fucking taught to do this.
