Last night when I was closing a department of our store I was doing recovery in our seasonal aisle. A mother with a cute, doe-eyed five year old daughter were trying to pick out the little girl's Halloween costume. We have a very small selection, about half of one side of an aisle and it's pretty exclusively "boy" costumes. The selection for girls is *literally* four princess dresses, cheap wigs and hair spray, and miscellaneous princess/fairy accessories.

The little girl selected a Spiderman costume and as I was working I kept hearing the mother try and convince the little girl to get another costume, her reasoning being that it came with a coupon for a free toy. I felt a little exasperated as I'd witnessed mothers pressure their reluctant daughters into choosing one of the four princess dresses all day. But when I glanced over the mother was holding up a slightly more expensive version of the Spiderman costume. Mom, trying to entice her daughter, repeated this one came with a free action figure and pointed out it had muscles sewn in.

The little girl, decidedly unimpressed, informed her mother "I don't want that one, if I wear that one no one will see my muscles."

I pulled Miss Spiderman an action figure with damaged packaging from the back for that one. :D

Not really a cute story, all of the little girls I know are being something other than the stereotypical princess, which I think is pretty awesome. One, who's about 7, decided she wanted to be a "half raccoon-half human"...her mom has no idea where she came up with that one, lol.

Awww that's adorable.

I usually had cute handmade costumes. My grandmother made me a Wizard of Oz dress, an Alice in Wonderland dress, and Belle's ballgown. Then I grew out of dresses and decided I was going to be a construction worker several years in a row because then it meant I'd get new workboots!

That is adorable. One year, when we were kids, my little sister was determined to dress up for Wolverine, fake muscles and all. I'm pretty sure my Mom still has the photos somewhere.

I gave you a very quiet squeal, so to not wake my roommate. This is adorable -- especially the "my muscles" part! And you rock for doing that.

Earlier today when I was waiting for the tram to come there was a mother with three children (What appeared to be twins boys and a younger one still in a stroller). And the twins were active, running around and playfighting. Their mother tried to reel them in a bit as they were very close to the street, but didn't really succeed.

But then the twins started playing Harry Potter by running around, pointing and yelling "Wingardium Leviosa!" and so followed by just yelling "Fire!" or "Lightning!" and stuff like that. So when one of them yelled "Water!" I said, "You know, if you want to cast a water spell you can just say Aguamenti." And they just stopped and stared at me in wonder before they started to ask me about more spells until the tram came.

Afterwards their mother thanked me for calming them down a bit, 'cause she was scared that they could fall down in the street or something. I just thought it was really sweet and I was happy to share some of my knowledge about HP. :)

I love the look kids get when you share knowledge about something they love and think adults don't care about. It's like you get to be someone's rockstar for a little bit. <3

This one's not as interesting as yours (adorbs btw), but I was babysitting the other night, met a girl of age 4 and guessed her age, then played a game with her: "See if you can guess my age!" After a brief moment of thought she said, "Sixty!!!" My co-babysitter and I lol'd.

(By the way, how often *does* it happen that moms try to convince their daughters to go the princess route? ugh. that would make me so mad. I'd have a hard time not getting myself in trouble)

Pretty much any time a girl strayed from the girl's selection she'd eventually get ushered back by a parent. In a couple of cases complete strangers (only middle aged or elderly women though) would chide other people's kids to pick something "prettier" or warned that they wouldn't want people to think they were boys.

I'm actually really bothered by our selection for girls because when we ordered the head of the department straight up told me we maximize profits by ordering large amounts of generic, default girl costumes (we were told not to order any Black Widow or She-Hulk costumes even though we've been selling those action figures and coloring books really well recently), because they will get sold. But if we don't have a wide range of selection for boys parents will take them elsewhere. So we need three different versions of Spiderman made available, but girls only need different color options for their princess dress because parents will coax them into settling for them.

I haven't been able to get out to the stables to see my horse much lately because of health and school, so the other day when I finally made it out there I found that Sharif and his buddy Butch had been put out in the front pasture that runs parallel to the driveway. As soon as Sharif saw me pull in, he trotted up to the fence and then cantered after my car all the way down to the other end of the driveway. It was so cute and sweet and I so wish I hadn't forgotten my camera that day. ♥

Cutest thing to happen to me recently:
I was wearing pince nez; a small boy sitting opposite me on the buss stared intently at me for a minute before whispering urgently to his dad, "That woman is DOING MAGIC."

So in my second year of teaching afterschool English, I started the first class by asking the 5th grade class what THEY thought the class rules should be--the idea being, if they agree on a rule, it's easier to get them to abide by it later. Well, the kids gave some standard things, "No hitting," "Speak English"--and some troll things, "Always eat candy," etc--before my favourite smart-ass spoke up.

"All right, what do you think one of the rules should be?"

"Teacher is Queen," he said, completely seriously.

GOD BLESS YOU YOU ADORABLE BRAT. And, honestly, whatever the official rules are that's the only one that really ends up being in effect.

I took my seven year old cousin to a family fun day type thing run by the charity I volunteer for, with stalls and games and shows, a few weeks ago. He was a bit overwhelmed by it all and by the number of people there approaching us to talk to me, especially without his big sister there (she was away at a camp for the weekend).

One of my colleagues came over to talk and to try and encourage him to enter a contest she was running, where you had to guess the name of the stuffed animal to win it, but he was having NONE of it. No smiles, no interest, nothing, and we just shrugged it off and went on with our day. He warmed up pretty quickly after that, so I guess he just needed some time to get used to his surroundings.

Anyway, the next day he sent me a text on his mom's phone telling me that he was sorry for being in a bad mood and could I say sorry to the "nice old lady" for him?

I saw her today for the first time since then and she was so touched by that and it just made me very proud of him.
