The only way it will get fixed is if the people making the types of shows that lead to big fandoms start casting attractive men of color in major roles. When the shows are all about white dudes, all the time, that is who people are going to ship.

(Not going to address het because there's already plenty of it, and femslash will just never be as popular when the majority of fandom is attracted to dudes.)

Even if you cast attractive men of color in major roles, that's no guarantee that people will ship it.

IIRC, didn't Scrubs have a thing in fandom where no one at all shipped JD and Turk despite the fact that this is by far the most obvious ship in the show?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, people didn't ship that? That's hard for me to wrap my brain around.

By far the favored pairing was JD/Cox. Yeah, it made no sense to me either. :\

da

I think that might have been because Turk and JD themselves canonically stated multiple times, and explicitly, that it was only a friendship. A deep friendship, but a friendship.

Some people find it harder to ship when characters have canonically explicitly stated they aren't gay, than when it's left up to subtext and possibility. And "not gay" like "I've actually given this a lot of thought and not gay but I do love you just not like that," and not "IM NOT GAY!!" sounding like a knee-jerk protest either.

I say that as someone who DOES ship it. Their canon bromance is so good soemtimes I almost feel bad.

Can we think of some examples of main ships featuring pocs?

People shipped the hell out of Mohinder/Sylar in Heroes. That's the only one I can think of.

There was also a Matt/Mohinder contingent, as I recall.

I'd consider Sulu/Chekov (aka Chulu) a main ship in Star Trek fandom, and it's interracial (w/the Asian dude pegged as the top no less!). As an Asian female, this ship suits my tastes very well ~

every anime and manga ever? entirety of non-western fandom? you ask that like its difficult

I know this is pretty much ancient history in internet times, but both main slash ships for the show Homicide were interracial.

I don't know how "main" these are, but peopled shipped Janeway/Chakotay on Voyager and Fred/Gunn on Angel. Zoe/Wash was a popular relationship on Firefly, although I'm not sure how much fandom felt the need to expand on it.

Abed/Troy on Community! Even most non-slashers I know like or at least see it!

(Anonymous) 2013-10-31 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Het or slash?

I don't actually know of any major slash ships with POCs (I'm aware of some smaller ones). But for het, there's Ichabbie in Sleepy Hollow and Olitz in Scandal. And Arwen in Merlin was pretty huge too, although it was always overshadowed by Arthur/Merlin.

The podcast series Welcome to Night Vale has Carlos, who's canonically not White, and Cecil, who's race/ethnicity has not been stated and thus could be a POC. And they're a couple in canon, too. (-:

Reid/Morgan is the most popular ship (afaik) for Criminal Minds.

I was surprised to discover Daryl/Glenn (from The Walking Dead) is hugely popular on Ao3.

Here are some slash ships

(Anonymous) 2013-10-31 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Brian/Dom from The Fast and the Furious
Chakotay/Tom and Harry/Tom from Star Trek: Voyager (I actually had a thing for Tuvok/Tom, but that was much less popular)
Warrick/Nick from CSI (at one point anyway)
Wes/Travis from Common Law
Elliot/Hardison from Leverage
Ryan/Esposito from Castle
G/Sam seem to be the main slash pairing from NCIS:LA
Morgan/Reid from Criminal Minds

I sort of remember Data/Geordi from Star Trek: The Next Generation being fairly popular, but that was a while ago.

I don't think they're a big pairing but I love them so
Kenzi/Hale Lost Girl

Boyd/Erica Teen Wolf (before Jeff Davis decided to be an idiot and get rid of the character with the most potential)

Anyone from the Avatar series if animation counts

Uhura/Kirk - Uhura/Spock - Uhura/Bones Star Trek
jain: Cougar Alvarez aiming a handgun. Text: "The quiet one" (losers cougar the quiet one)

[personal profile] jain 2013-10-31 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Cougar/Jensen, Jolene/Pooch, Clay/Roque, and Aisha/Clay, all from The Losers. The fandom's interesting in that the white dude/white dude relationship--Clay/Jensen--has barely any fic for it (and this despite the fact that the white dudes in question are played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Chris Evans).

I never watched the show, but I got the impression that in Psych fandom the interracial main duo wad not the most popular slash pairing, either.

This. There was a "Sleepy Hollow" post making the rounds that had someone complaining there were no men for her to ship Ichabod with. Actually there are three: John Cho, Orlando Jones and the guy that's playing Luke - but none of them are white dudes.

(And I guarantee you that fandom will throw itself all over Ichabod/James Frain as soon as he shows up, regardless of how small his role might be).

And as a survivor of the "Merlin" fandom I can attest that there was infinitely less Elyan-related fic (him being the only black knight) then there was for any of the other white dudes.

I think a lot of it also has to do with the character's role within the story; in my experience people LOVE to ship rivals/enemies/characters with bad feeling towards each other in canon far more than best friends, and POCs are often relegated to 'the best friend' while the rival/archnemesis is another white guy.
