Do you think it's that there's more important white dude in canon? Or that non-white non-dudes are just straight unappealing to you?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-31 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
DA, but personally? I just ship white dudes more for reasons I can't explain. That's not to say I haven't written white dude/black dude or white dude/white chick or black dude/white chick, but I always seem to go back to white dude/white dude. There's no rhyme or reason that I can find. :/

I am white. I prefer white characters in my smut. do I only ship and read smut about white characters? No. but I do prefer them.

Why do you think the reverse is nowhere near as true?

Most of the characters I lust after are white, but I don't know if that's because there are more white characters in general?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't need "fixing". You like what you like, and people who give you shit for it are dicks. Ignore them.

I prefer "default" for wherever the story is set, depending on where and when it's set. When characters are "default" you deal with much fewer issues and have less chance of running into cringey racism-as-plot fics, which is a bonus. Which ends up in people going "why are all your slash pairs white?" It's because most of the slash is set in US/UK/other areas where white is "default" because that's where the shows are set. If you look at all my pairings for animanga, it's not like I go slash the two token white characters because they're white when the rest of the cast is japanese or something.

I guess if you're serious about trying to fix the problem (however you define it), I'd try actively searching out shows/books/fan-fic where there ARE no white dudes.

Pick a random female character or POC and have a think about them - make up some head-canons, focus on things you like about them, look for things that you can relate to in the way they behave/think.

The biggest defence for fandom's fixation on slash always seems to be that white dudes are inherently more interesting. Women and POC are always underwritten. That may be the case but it doesn't HAVE to be that way in your head-canon or fics.

Could be because a lot of the time the white dudes are the main or well-written or most developed characters. So it makes sense to me that a lot of people would prefer to ship the white dudes. And then it can set up a routine or like a training of what you like/expect to like, thus automatically looking towards the white dudes to ship.

Which, whatever. Ship what you wanna ship.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
There's nothing you, personally can do to fix it, so don't feel so bad. It's on the show-makers to write/cast interesting characters that aren't white dudes, and just throwing random two-dimensional tokens in doesn't cut it. That isn't your fault.

[personal profile] caecilia 2013-10-30 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
do you WANT to fix it? I could write a persuasive essay on the wonders of shipping ladies if you want but in the end you like what you like? I dunno man, I started out just shipping het, then I discovered slash and...I just ship characters that have chemsitry. Gender only matters so far as "I'm in the mood to read about men today" and race has never been a factor outside of the limits of canon.

Or, most main characters with a personality are white dudes (or aliens), so, there's not too much else to ship unless you want to start head-canoning all over the place.

The only way it will get fixed is if the people making the types of shows that lead to big fandoms start casting attractive men of color in major roles. When the shows are all about white dudes, all the time, that is who people are going to ship.

(Not going to address het because there's already plenty of it, and femslash will just never be as popular when the majority of fandom is attracted to dudes.)

exposure exposure exposure

as a white immigrant that grew up in a primary POC immigrant community being attracted to people not my own skin tone is natural because those were the kind of people I saw when hitting puberty. in fact if the media/books I read weren't so inundated with white males as the standard for male beauty I'd probably have an even stronger reaction to seeing many white in one place/being attracted to white boys. (it feels weird at first but after a couple days I get over the whiteness and it's not an instant "...wait" roadblock when considering attractiveness)

Well I can't speak to the larger problem, but here's a way to lookg at it for yourself!

Do you simply find non-white dudes not as hot as white dudes? Find pictures of non-white dudes that fit your aesthetics, follow tumblrs that will populate your feed with them, develop an aesthetic love of non-white dudes. This includes the ladies too, of course.

Try finding a new story with a pairing you wouldn't usually enjoy. Give it a try (don't go for the really long ones at first, might be overkill).

Try to expand your mind so that you learn to enjoy more than just shipping white dudes, and that starts with consuming more than just white dudes making eyes at each other. Not saying you have to give it up, but just make it an acquired taste.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-31 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
This is tricky, because I think that the "this is racist" response AND the "you like what you like" response are both valid in their own ways. So, first, you're not some broken person, just a product of a society which values whiteness over other races. And you know that, which is farther than a lot of people get, so yay!

The rest is basically a product of a lot of the things other people have said: lesser availability of POC leads and POC who don't fall into two-dimensional or stereotypical characterizations, greater availability of white pairings in fandom, and yeah, probably on some level your own internalized prejudice, because a white standard of beauty has of course influenced the way you view other people even on a purely aesthetic level.

I would say that most of the burden is on the entertainment industry to create characters of color who are just as dynamic and rich as white characters. But what you, specifically, can do is seek out media that depict people of color in more complex ways (not as the good guys every time, just as richly developed people). And that media is hard to find, so you can also find blogs, Tumblrs, etc., that celebrate beautiful POC and unlearn some of those internalized things by overloading the biased part of your brain. Beauty and attraction are sometimes just as much about seeing something as familiar as they are about something exceptional.

And finally, look at this picture over and over, because ajlfj2jls: http://24.media.tumblr.com/882b0e2c7066cda2c3429b9b9d22ab85/tumblr_mt9y5cPlcU1qbmwkbo1_500.jpg

I sympathise with you.

I don't like this culture of "If you don't ship POC you're racist!". It feels like I am being pressured into not liking what I am attracted to.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-31 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's something you need to fix, necessarily. There's nothing wrong with you. The distressing part of the issue, to me, is not that most folks zero in on white dudes as the most appealing, that's what white-dominated societies condition us all to do (it happens to me, and I'm not even white and I grew up in a non-white neighborhood), it's that when it's pointed out, people tip themselves over backwards getting defensive and coming up with weird excuses. Like, it's okay, it's not automatically accusing you of eating babies (although I'm fully aware that some rabid idiots do just that) just that it's a really predictable aspect of fandom. You don't have to justify or change it, it'd just be nice if so many weren't oblivious to it and then clutch their pearls when it's pointed out like somebody's gonna take their white guys away from them.

Eh, there are quite a few men of colour in my fandoms and nobody seems to have any trouble shipping them with the white dudes. Curiously, though, I have noticed that they rarely ship the former with each other for some reason... Huh. For example, in one there's three main dudes: a white guy, a black guy, and a hispanic guy. People ship the white guy with the black guy and the white guy with the hispanic guy all the time, but I've literally never seen the black guy with the hispanic guy. Then again, those two also have far more interactions with the white guy than they do with each other, so less slash fodder to start with.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-31 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Because you grew up in a culture rife with racial assumptions and stereotypes, non-white characters are indelibly tagged as "Other" to you. This creates a greater emotional distance between yourself and them, which is why you have a harder time connecting to them.

This doesn't make you an evil person; it just means you grew up in a racist society, and you still have some baggage from that. (And they're ALL racist societies.)

Well, I have a few questions for you.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-31 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
Do you only ship white dudes? Do you only find white dudes attractive? If the answer is yes to one or both of these questions, you might want to examine why.

Otherwise, I believe a lot of shipping white dudes is a numbers game. The overwhelming majority of most American TV show casts are white men (I think the men part is a little more puzzling than the white part since women make up more than 50 percent of the US population according to the last census, but whatever). And, yes, most of the US population is white, but it’s less than is portrayed in a lot of shows. So, of the prominent characters that are male, maybe 85% percent of them are white. With that, it isn’t really that surprising that most slash ships are white.

But I also think some of it is societal conditioning. There is a certain sort of prized actor attractiveness (you can see this in how a lot of actors have similar features). And it’s not unusual to be attracted to more people of the same race as you.

Plus, there is the fact that interracial relationships are still not all that common.

I don't think shipping white dudes is inherently racist (although I do think that racism can be a contributing factor to the things I mentioned above), but it doesn't hurt to examine why things are the way they are.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-31 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
wtf, what is there to "fix"? you like what you like, and ffs there is nothing wrong with liking white (or any other orientation) dudes. this sjw bullshit has really gone too far, it's just the colour of someone's skin ffs.
