If there is no Liefeld in there, I am going to be seriously disappointed.

This is really really improbable-sounding, but I swear to God, I was JUST going to post a secret with almost the exact same content and sentiment, with a screenshot of that exact same godawful ad picture of Powergirl that always pops up on deviantart. Cross my heart and hope to die. I even took a screencap, although I didn't write the secret yet. Seriously, you made me wonder for a second whether I forgot I posted this secret, except then I realized that the secret wasn't made in my style.

Meaning that YES IA SO HARD.

Completely agree. Are there artists there with good anatomy skills?

Yes there are, but they're always accused of drawing "fat" women when they draw women with a waist that can accommodate a complete set of internal organs.

Agreed. I mean, if you like a ridiculous style, go right ahead (though I might not agree with that), but they're not the best people to learn anatomy drawing from.

What bugs me about the women in a lot of comics isn't just that they look silly, but that they look the same. Take Dust, for instance--she's very religious, so she was designed with a very conservative outfit, but a lot of artists have it hug her curves, because to them, hugging curves is what a woman's outfit does. Or Amanda Waller--she had a bulky and imposing look to go with her forceful personality, but when I last cared about DC she was thin, because comic book girls are thin. ( There's a bit more variety in guys--Spidey's a nerd at heart, so he's usually less muscular than Captain America--but I'd still like to see more types.

(For what it's worth, I have the same objection to manga where the main guys are all similar-looking pretty boys.)

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
So many artists are bad at creating varied character designs, OR they don't think that having characters look distinct is very important, OR they aren't willing to sacrifice their idea of beauty (which is extremely narrow, I guess) to make characters look different.

To me it is THE MOST IMPORTANT, so 100% agree with you here.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing that gets me really excited about an artist is when their characters' clothes look realistic. Unless you're wearing something extremely tight like a spandex unitard, your clothes are probably going to slightly obscure the shape of your body. To me, drawing the shapes and folds of fabric correctly is a lot more challenging than just drawing the outline of a body. Amy Reeder is an artist who I think does this well.

One of the reasons I love Love and Rockets (Locas) so much is the female characters all look different. The female wrestlers look like wrestlers, and no one would mistake Maggie for Penny, even when they're wearing the same superhero costume.

Yeah. A friend and I were talking about this project... both agreeing that it'd be cool to flip through, but not enough to want/need/understand the point of it. It seems really overvalued as a resource in its pitch page.

A lot of the how to draw comics/learn anatomy from comic book artists are hilarious because the artists themselves don't ascribe to the same rules.

I have one book where it talks about how a woman's body should be suitable to what she does, assassin/ninjas not having large breasts for example and that made me laugh, and laugh, because no comic artist sticks to that rule. Ever.

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-11-02 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww, but women can look like that, OP...

With photoshop!

/Has seen the "this isn't realistic anatomy" threads on forums turn into a deluge of teenaged virgins screeching "yes it is stop being jealous of hot girls uggos" whilst posting heavily photoshopped pictures of porn stars with gargantuan breast implants as "proof" one too many times

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
lol This so hard. There was that gif recently that showed a model shoot where the woman was thin, but they photoshopped her to be even more slender, elongated her neck, stretched her legs, made her breasts smaller/perkier, and then changed her skin tone a bit. Just, no.

Agreed.

Why are erect nipples so common in comics and manga? Are all the girls bra-less or something.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, wait. Since when are bras supposed to hide erect nipples? Because mine don't, at all - except for this last one I bought that's like padded.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I... I have a burning rage that can only be quenched with fanboy blood.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see much wrong with the PG shot. Sure, it's drawn from a perspective to emphasize her substantial bosom (which eventually became a joke in her own book), but as far as looking like a human being she has all the right bits in the right places. Unlike the bottom, in which ribs are missing and such.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, as someone with naturally big boobs (though not quite as athletic) I'm starting to find it pretty upsetting that everyone insists that her body type is "unnatural".

I honestly have no interest in this because I already have anatomy books from reliable sources.

And it's true, not all comic books and animators are good at anatomy, but I have to say this- just because they draw in a certain style in comic books or animations, it doesn't mean they DON'T KNOW anatomy. There definitely are talented animators who know how to do beautiful realistic work, but you'd have to take a look at their life drawings to know.

And honestly I'm getting a little tired of this "OMG EVERYTHING MUST BE SUPER 100% REALISTIC!!!!" tumblr attitude. I'd actually love it if comics got more exaggerated, but I love super cartoony styles.

In any case, I don't think this is any worse then some of the anatomy tutorials I've seen being spread around deviantart or tumblr. At least most professionals somewhat know what they're talking about, deviantart users on the other hand...

what, you really think that because that kind of body-type is unattainable to some americans, it has no right to be drawn?

think again please; we have that kind of body-type in my country; it actually has a signifier - it is called wasp waist:
