Self-censoring swearing?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Why is this a thing? I thought even BSG fans thought "frick" was dumb.

I do that sometimes, but only on the Internet, in places where there's obviously no reason to do so. Because I think that's funny.

Because people are fucking dumb.

It's not a magical spell, the shape of the words isn't what's offensive, it's the term itself and everything that encapsulates which you're still saying jesus christ.

People have different backgrounds and a few backgrounds take swearing as a thing you shouldn't do.

People who don't curse ever sound really uptight though.

I used to never ever curse, but now I swear like a sailor (and then some). My non-cursing days were just the calm before the storm. :)

I didn't for the longest time either. I do occasionally now, but overall I'm fairly mild and pretty good about holding my tongue in a setting where I shouldn't.

My long time friends still sometimes give me trouble give me trouble when I do curse because they're used to me not.

What made you make the switch over, anon? :o

Oops, late reply - just came back and saw this now. I don't even know what happened - I like to blame my sister, because she came home for a visit with f-bombs, and then I picked them up, and started using them as adjectives, adverbs, etc. etc. And then online fandom - and that just compounded the problem and introduced to me the concept of compound swear words. ;)

I think that when I was a young adult, I was very "good", and yes people were surprised when I said the word "frick". The older I got, the more comfortable I got in my own skin, and with expressing myself. That doesn't mean you need swears to express yourself, though - I think sometimes it's just a quick easy shortcut.

That being said, MOST of my swearing takes place in the car, where you're kind of in a bubble and you can trash-talk without offending anyone. I don't let out f-bombs in a professional situation, with the exception of being with close confidants and in the midst of a really stressful situation.

Whew! Long-winded reply, but you made me think there.

I don't think your friends should be giving you grief about it, unless it's taking place in an inappropriate setting (and yes, I know that's subjective, too). People change! We get older, we get fatter, we may or may not get wiser, and some of us just get saltier. ;)

I self censor when I am around children or in a professional setting.

For where I grew up, if you swore, then you sounded like you had no class, i.e. breeding. One of the worst things you could do (and remain within the boundaries of "polite company") is swear in the wrong context.

Even saying something like "fricking" in front of your grandparents is seen as a no-no.

Basically the substitutes make it okay to say in polite company without being judged as hard as full out swearing. Saying, "I was waiting in that line for 10 fricking minutes" is more okay than saying, "I was waiting in that line for 10 fucking minutes."

It goes back to the earlier settlers. idk, but it feels pretty bad to have a whole room of people go :O at you for having said "fuck".

I just like to have some variety so sometimes I say fuck sometimes I say frick and sometimes I say flim-flam doo wop dee wop, life's too short.

"flim-flam doo wop dee wop"

For me, sometimes it feels appropriate. Even though I don't see anything wrong with swearing, I don't feel comfortable cursing like a sailor around my niece or nephew. It just depends on the situation, but I understand why people do it, and why others might not like to.

(Though, ngl, I'm not very good at self-censoring. It's difficult.)

I like my vast swearing vocabulary, and I don't feel all situations warrant a fuck. "Frick" is a perfectly good alternative for less fucked up situations.

I self-censor when I'm around children, when I'm around friends I know are uncomfortable with it, because it doesn't really hurt me, or when I don't know who might be listening, and be uncomfortable with it.

Or depending on my mood, really, as I tend to think of censored words as sillier? Like, no one can take frick-frack seriously, let's be real. I also feel like censored words are calmer? Like "fuck yes!" or "godfuckingdammit" are really strong emotions, while "oh my goodness (gracious is optional)!" and "oh gosh" are calmer?

I don't swear around my mother if i can possible help it, and i know she appreciates that. I didn't swear in front of my dad, either, even though he did sometimes. I generally say 'god's teeth' in front of my mom, if i swear at all.

I generally don't swear in front of kids just because i don't want some annoying parent leaping down my throat, and i try not to swear in front of 'grandma/pa' types when i'm out and about.

Like - complaining about bad service at a restaurant? I would never, ever swear at all, because it's just tacky and makes you sound like a jerk.

At home and with friends and online, though, i cuss like a sailor.

I sensor myself at work and on other people's journals. In my own home and journal I swear when I feel like it. But not that often anyway. Nice to save some words for special occasions.

I just don't swear much in general, I guess? Though I also self-censor heavily depending on context, either in professional settings or in front of kids (mostly to avoid irate parents). That said, I never try to use substitutes like 'frick', I just speak without swearwords altogether.

Re: Self-censoring swearing?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
It's not always censoring.

I've just never been in the habit of swearing much because... why should I? When I do swear, it's usually reserved for really serious situations. Depending on my audience, I will occasionally use it for emphasis, but that's less a matter of me freely expressing myself and more of me trying to speak the "language" of the folks I'm talking to so they will understand. I don't have a problem with swearing and I don't get uncomfortable when other people swear a lot, but it's not as if profuse, casual swearing is some kind of normal, baseline way of speaking that people who don't swear so much are actively trying to avoid.

The language I use depends on how I want other people to think of me. I usually avoid expletives all around when I talk, instead of saying things like fricking or shite. I do like some SFW euphemisms, though. Dag-nabbit is always fun.

Dag-nabbit is such a funny phrase. I love it, but I don't use it often. I go straight for the expletives.
