Someone posted a secret a couple days ago talking about how he/she wishes they were more conservative because not being 100% completely liberal has caused her problems.

I have also seen fandom people attack others because they don't actually support [SLASH COUPLE]. This makes them homophobic assholes. Or if you don't like a certain female character, you are totally a misogynist. I have seen people who have been ran off Tumblr for simply stating an opinion. And instead of ignoring it (or trying to calmly talk about it), they are sent horrible hate mail until they have to delete their blogs.

Being liberal does not make you more open minded.

AGREED SO HARD OMG

I see so many people who think being liberal makes them open-minded, who claim to be open minded and progressive ..but then they'll send someone hate-mail for disagreeing with them and tell someone "fuck off and drink bleach" for presenting a different perspective or telling them their opinion about X cause is misinformed, or telling them that they're speaking over someone who's a member of some group.

They'll trigger someone with a disorder or put them on a black list of supposed "rape apologists" or they'll post their address and tell people to reblog because that person is TOTALLY a danger to everyone after an argument with them.

You know what's a true test of how open minded you are? If you can take someone voicing a different opinion without cussing them out and shutting them down with "check your privilege" (because surely anyone doesn't agree with you MUST be privileged amirite?)

This is the fucking worst. Especially since they usually post these addresses based off of IP addresses (doxxing). It is like they don't understand how IP addresses work.

"or they'll post their address and tell people to reblog because that person is TOTALLY a danger to everyone after an argument with them."

I saw a post on Tumblr a while back where they got a LOT of people trying to take down a guy. He was an independent lawyer, and they were spamming his yelp page and telling anyone who would listen shit about how he was a terrible person. This is from an incorrect IP address search of someone who said the equivalent of "lol rape" in someone's ask box.

This is when I kind of lost a lot of faith in the tumblr community as a whole.

Yes. Some folks just don't seem to realize that being tolerant does not meant being tolerant exclusively towards social groups they like.

Hmm, I've honestly never seen this. I've seen people delete their blogs before, but they were generally bad people. One of them was a guy who admitted to raping someone, and another was a white guy who continued to use n-word even after people told him to stop. He deleted his blog, and one of my friends took his url and he started whining and offering to buy the url from my friend for $300. Another was a guy who was sexually harassing young girls. I don't really feel like it was much of a loss?

I think people get kind of melodramatic about people deleting their tumblrs. No one is forced to delete their tumblr, and it's not that big of a deal if you do.

I don't like a canon slash ship in one of my fandoms, and I ship the main character with a female character he has shown attraction to instead. A lot of people don't like the couple, and I've seen people flat-out bash it all the time, but I've never received hate specifically geared toward me for shipping it or running a blog for the ship.

Then again, I'm not in large fandoms filled with notoriously douchey people, so things could be different elsewhere.

Trust me, the other sort exist too.

[personal profile] fleshisyummy 2013-11-11 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, like I said, it might happen in larger fandoms, but I'm not really all that involved in those. I have to admit that I'm generally not all that sympathetic toward the people "run off of tumblr." They're usually pretty nasty people for what I've seen.

I'm also kind of curious what people seem to think "hate" is. I've been pretty blunt and terse with people before, but I've never wished harm on anyone.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-11 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
How about this.

A girl admits that she doesn't really see a popular ship (ie she doesn't see those two people together. nothing about their orientation just "I don't see it" ) She gets a whole flood of people telling her she's horrible she is probably unloved and pathetic and she should die . Like just a whole bunch of ugly comments like this and "HDU" comments for stating an opinion.

I've seen this go down.

Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Yes , people DO wish harm. Just because you don't doesn't mean others do.

All I said that I've never seen this in any of my fandoms, and that the people I've seen that have deleted their blogs weren't all that sympathetic.

In any case, yeah, that's pretty horrible that happened, but kaijinscendre made this seem like it's a pretty frequent/common thing which it doesn't seem to be in all situations/fandoms.

I'm kind of curious what fandoms these are because whenever I see ship hate get tagged, people at most just tell the person to "fuck off" from what I've seen.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-11 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
well I've seen it in some parts of sherlock fandom. Some parts of doctor who fandom.

Also I've seen people who were in fandom (like in general) making disgusting statements about what they considered "hipster blogs" . Like saying they should be killed.

Confirmation Bias.

Just because that's all you've seen doesn't mean it's the only situation that exists.

Also it's not dramatic to want to quit if people are saying horrible things to you. Not everyone who gets bullied on Tumblr deserves it.
fleshisyummy: (Default)

[personal profile] fleshisyummy 2013-11-11 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Uhhhhh, I never said it didn't happen. I just said I personally have never seen it.

I never said it was dramatic to quit. I just said it's dramatic when people act like deleting your tumblr is like the ~worst possible thing that could happen~ lol.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-11 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's not the worst thing that can happen, but it is pretty fucking shitty to have an inbox full of anon hate and feel so harassed that you don't want to bother anymore.

Mean things said on line actually affect people.

It's not the fact that deleting the tumblr is the worst but the fact that a person just couldn't take a barrage of hate and decided to quit.
fleshisyummy: (Default)

[personal profile] fleshisyummy 2013-11-11 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I agree with you there. I definitely thing it's horrible if people have to deal with undeserved hate (which I've seen but not in a fandom context).

However, I do kind of laugh at the people who are all, "You made this guy delete his tumblr blog!! You're horrible and ruined his life!!" when the dude in question flat-out admitted to sexually harassing people and raping another person. He's probably an example of probably one of the worst people ever who ended up deleting his tumblr blog, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-11 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Ah okay....That second example is...yeaaaah.

making someone delete their blog isn't anything compared to rape.

I can see where you're coming from there.

I apologize for being so angry.

+1,000,000 to this.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-11 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Or if you don't like a certain female character, you are totally a misogynist.

Well, let's not kid ourselves--fandom in general is HORRIBLY misogynistic. Female characters are scrutinized and ripped apart to a disgusting degree. I have to say, whenever someone goes off about how they "hate" a female character who's written as being nuanced and flawed (egs., Ginny, Betty Draper) like all human beings, yes, my default assumption is that they're misogynistic. (Someone like Umbridge, however, is a different story--she is obviously written as a villain.)

Being liberal does not make you more open minded.

I definitely agree and I'm pretty liberal.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-11 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought people generally hated Ginny because she's not nuanced and doesn't have flaws. Unlike say, Hermione or Luna, who are pretty popular. Is someone who hates Ginny but likes those characters a misogynist?

DA

(Anonymous) 2013-11-11 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
But she does if you read the books carefully and disregard Harry's bias. Reading carefully you see a lot of flaws about it her, recklessness, a hot temper, the tendency to be catty sometimes (she was called out for that one too, remember Fluer? Ginny was horribly catty about Fluer.)

I will say that maybe she wan't written perfectly. But she DOES have flaws
