ONLY SEEN GAME OF THRONES, HAVEN'T READ THE BOOKS

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-11-12 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I recall Jaime casually pushing a young boy off a tower in an attempt to kill him.

He may be getting less terrible through good deeds and character growth, but don't pretend he's "better" than Cersei. They are both terrible people in their own ways.

He's better than Cersei because he has good qualities that she lacks.

And in the books she was the one who ordered the massacre of the babies. The show toned that down to make her more sympathetic. That should give you an idea of how horrible she is.

Everyone in Game of Thrones is at least somewhat terrible, or dead, or both.

hm, I can't entirely agree.

It's the ones who do the large, public gestures that get Tarquined. Those that know how to slip in small acts of compassion "under the radar" -- Tyrion, for example, Davos, and Sandor (though I suspect the latter would kill anyone who accused him of compassion) --- at least in the TV series have mananged to survive.

I said at least somewhat terrible, though, and even if people are capable of being compassionate, they also usually have some serious moral flaws or some heinous shit they've done in the past (which we usually overlook when we're stanning for them). As much as I love Tyrion as a character, I think "somewhat terrible" is definitely a fair descriptor, and Sandor is a fairly brutal knight in addition to whatever else he is. The world of ASOIAF tends to require people to make horrible, awful choices - people are torn between untenable alternatives by the vicissitudes of power. You have to be somewhat ruthless.

Davos actually probably is an exception, though. I forgot about him. Which is a shame because he's so awesome.

Oh, and SA - I think there are probably some other exceptions as well, thinking about it - notably Brienne.

You could say Sansa as well, but I'd give it another couple books before I made that call one way or the other.

Point taken.

I suppose it's that the truly terrible are SO far off the normal scale that they do make the "not always completely terrible" ones seem almost saintly in comparison.

Everyone being somewhat terrible (or dead) is what makes Game of Thrones so enjoyable!

At least he wasn't killing people when he was ten--or did you think Cersei's little friend fell into that well all on her own?

I don't remember that bit in the show, but I'd argue that murdering someone as a child is slightly less heinous than killing someone as an adult. Children have less of a grasp on consequences and right and wrong than adults.

It may not have been included in the show--has the show got up to Maggy the Frog yet?

Yeah, this.

Like pretty much all characters in the series, both Jaime and Cersei have their "good" qualities and their "bad" qualities. Some people just chose to ignore one side of things when it doesn't suit their most likely shipping needs.

Character growth IS what is making him better. They start out the same, he's growing into something better and she's getting arguably worse. No one's saying he's not without flaws, but he's got more good qualities than Cersei does at this point, even in just the TV show and disregarding the books.

Ah, and this is a place where book-readers diverge sharply from show-watchers.

The TV show toned down Cersei massively from the books, and it darkened Jaime a bit. (Example: He doesn't kill his cousin in the books. His annoying cousin gets killed by the enemy at a later time and he doesn't feel too sad about it, but it's very different from strangling his cousin to death as he does in the show.)

HAVEN'T READ THE BOOKS

Read the books. He's worlds better than Cersei.
