Fandom and phobias

(Anonymous) 2013-11-14 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Has fandom ever either helped you with something you are scared of, or made you more scared of something? Or both even!

For example:

Playing Skyrim has helped me with my arachnophobia. I've gotten way less scared of spiders in real life after all those Frostbite Spiders.

On the other hand, playing the new Assassin's Creed game (and I don't consider this spoilery, but perhaps slight gameplay spoiler, idk) and the underwater places in it has made me more scared of sharks than Jaws ever did. I've had three nightmares about sharks since I've started playing it :( (I can't really call this a phobia yet, but still..)

I'm really interested how this happened.

Pokémon gave me a childhood fear of fire breathing lion beasts and one eyed alphabet soup letters, but I think that's it.

This is a bit indirect but... if I wasn't in fandom I never would have discovered this comm, and if I hadn't discovered this comm I would not have had my arachnophobia cured by cuteanimalpics's lovely photo posts.

Haha. I hate bugs in GENERAL and spiders aren't even the kind I fear most (I AIN'T TALKING ABOUT IT), but I do think video games have helped me a bit in that regard. A LITTLE bit. I still run screaming from them on occasion.

As for AssCreed, YES. I actually just got to the diving sections, and was SO excited to finally be able to fully (or almost, anyway) upgrade my ship, then I actually played it and...there is so much fucking fear. I can manage it but omfg the potential for drowning (Sonic's drowning theme has scarred me for life and made me even more afraid of playing games that involve underwater travel) and then the sharks + music on top of that make it so nerve-wracking. Oh how I wish the (majority of) elite ship upgrades weren't in these damned underwater wrecks. :(

The comment below made me realize I've never been scared scaling building and the like in Assassin's Creed despite my intense fear of heights. Wouldn't say it's helped me in the real world, though.

It's not exactly phobia-level, but the constant use of heartbeat noises for frightening or tense scenes and for 'OMG your health bar is low you're gonna die' indicators in the video games I play is starting to make me feel tense whenever anything draws my attention to my own heartbeat or pulse. I keep half-expecting some kind of jump scare.

Ico gave me a fear of heights.

Basically there's this point where you're up on top of the castle, and you have to walk out on this beam and climb down a chain hanging from it, and start swinging on the chain to give yourself momentum to jump from the chain into a window.

I pressed the wrong button and instead of jumping, let go of the chain.

Camera panned to show the forest way, way below as Ico fell, turning into a speck and then disappearing... and it was still another several horrifying seconds until the screen turned red to indicate I had died.

DDDDDDDD:

(I used to be that obnoxious kid who would go out on the glass-bottomed observation decks in tall buildings and jump up and down to make other people nervous. :P)

Actually, yes a fandom worked helped me, and quite recently too. I was terrified of getting some tests done, but bizarrely a few of the characters in a fic I was reading were getting the same tests done. It was an extraordinarily good fic, and the tests were imminent in the source material.

But yeah. They actually helped me feel a lot better at having to do them by myself.

Tomb Raider taught me that I really hate being trapped underground or underwater (or both!), even via a cartoon avatar. Really. Really really hate those things.
