Are you really being accepted by fandom if they consider you the most out there example they can use to demonstrate how openminded they are?

"I think Character is cool, especially when he's a transman! Being a transman makes him so much cooler!"

I get what you're saying, and trans headcanons by actual queer people count for more, but... these people aren't necessarily fighting for you. Isn't tokenism just dehumanizing someone while cheering?

I love queer and trans headcanons. Try not to worry about the backlash (easier said than done, I know). If trans headcanons make you happy then just keep reading about them.

It's good that you've found something that makes you happy. And I can't speak for SNK because I'm not in the fandom and haven't seen the anime but in Night Vale the backlash that I've seen isn't so much that people don't agree with the headcanon. It's more that they were angry about being called transphobic for not having the same headcanon.

Also, there's some nicely drawn comics of trans!Carlos and some cute fic if you're ever interested.

This really. Nightvale is infested with SJW's and SJW type tactics in the fandom. I don't have a problem with Trans!Carlos or say, white carlos/Native American Cecil. I do have a problem with the person who attacks the guy who drew M/M carlos cecil (or, on the other end, called Trans!Carlos artist a homophobe erasing a queer relationship), or "calling out" folks who drew him too white.

I'm trans and I hate most trans headcanons. It seems like most people are trotting them out for progressiveness points, or tacking on labels with no real understanding, or just straight up fetishising the characters. It doesn't necessarily mean they are any more enlightened about actual trans people either, they just tend to be offensive in different ways.

to all of this. it's sad and will likely come to pass in favor of a new trend by this time next year.

[personal profile] gondremark 2013-11-21 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I have seen some good ones, but they're few and far between, because trans people are few and far between (and thus only a few such headcanons will come from people who are actually trans or are otherwise reasonably familiar with the matter). Most the time when Tumblr starts flinging around the word "trans" they're just doing it for easy points and have no idea what they're actually dealing with.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Also agreed. Most of the ones I see are a fantasy portrayal of transness that has no connection to real trans lives or even to the reality of the fandom's canon. Which is fine, fandom is a great place to do ridiculous fantasy things. But then so many people couple that with "look this proves how progressive I am" and I get pissed off.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Add in the fact that almost all of the trans headcanons I've seen are based on gender stereotypes (i.e. "he dresses like a girl, therefore he must be a girl!"), and yeah, it's offensive.

I'm glad you're happy, OP! I just hate when people are like "if you don't believe trans headcanon for x character, that means your're a bigot!"
gondremark: (Default)

[personal profile] gondremark 2013-11-21 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
They say that, and then I say, "but I think that's a stupid headcanon and I'm trans myself".
And they say, "lol, internalised [somethingorother]".

When knowledgeable people headcanon a character as trans, it's usually pretty great. It demonstrates that we're not completely forgotten after all. But when your average Tumblrite does the same, what you end up with is a mish mash of special snowflakes, binders as holy grails, and really lame gender role stereotypes.
When I see the good headcanons I feel all mushy inside.
When I see that bad ones, well, we had a secret about how laughably ridiculous they are day before yesterday.

What's up with this spate of trans secrets, anyway? It's like we're going to discuss trans issues every day no matter what.
Not that I mind, though, you guys for the most part are all understanding and accepting and whatnot and don't make me want to go hide under a rock the way real life does.

"binders as holy grails"
I am picturing this amazing quest for the holy binder with "ooohhh ahhhhh" choirs and it's amusing me a bit too much

(sorry, not much else to say beyond the fact that I agree with you, but tee hee)

Tangential, but I get so baffled by mentions of binders. My brain always goes to the three-ring kind first, and I spend a couple seconds going "Wait, is there extensive paperwork involved with being trans?" before my brain notices the "disambiguation" link in my mental wikipedia and I catch up.

The worst is the people that like using trans guys to write canon mpreg. I know there are trans men who get pregnant but it isn't exactly a fun experience. I know one fic writer who is super progressive and always talking about how there should be more 'queer representation'. All her ideas for trans men characters involve them getting pregnant and everybody going "Oh wow, sex and gender are so flexible, isn't this amazing! Challenge the binary!" Aaaargh.

Here's something else to think about. Being trans is an affliction I would not wish on anybody. It's not the latest edgy, cool, and different thing to be, it's just something that sucks that I have to deal with all the time because fate has a sick sense of humour.
Being trans isn't yay happy different progressive trans! it's I can't afford painful surgeries and expensive medications but I get on with my life as best I can, and my life is actually pretty great despite having to carry this around all the time.

I have a similar feeling toward my disabilities and representations of them. I am very picky about the way disabilities are shown in media and I can understand how trans people would be the same about trans depictions.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
That's just the thing. I think if they actually manage to build a good, believable headcanon, that's all great. But most of the headcanons I saw were more along the "Trans* is the new black" sort of thing. A lot of trans headcanons reek of only being there to push the headcanoneer's ~super progressive~ net persona and earing them SJW brownie points. Yet what they really do most times is actively and happily othering trans people, portraying it as the new, cool in-thing and only throwing in the not-so-great aspects for ~angsty~ reasons.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Used for cheap drama" is the very definition of how I've seen gender issues treated by fandom. That is, how I've seen them treated by the few people who bother taking their trans* headcanons beyond stating them on tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-21 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Not trying to be a debbie downer but sometimes it seems like the characters that get head canoned as trans are because they're not stereotypically girly/manly enough.

It kind of bothers me when people are like 'well Hanji has a masculine personality so she must be a transguy/transgirl'

I don't think her personality would affect her gender.

Well I don't do Tumblr, so I haven't seen the majority of the stuff the backlash is about. All I know is that what of the backlash I've seen (mostly due to secrets here) is more a backlash against people who get upset and bitchy because other people don't agree with their headcanons.

Really most of what I see is the occasional trans or genderqueer fic that comes up. Some I can read and they don't rub me the wrong way. Some I try to read... and it's like they're artificially forcing the character into a gender role. Some... the details about gender identity may be just fine but the way it's written just doesn't work for me.

And I'm not good at identifying why I like or dislike a fic, I only know when I try to read them whether I can keep on reading, stop because of the style, or stop because the handling is wrong.

I do wish there would be more fics in both a style and handling I can read.

Is the wank against the headcanons themselves? No, seriously asking here...

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-11-21 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Because I have seen very little of either trans headcanons themselves or the backlash against them, but of what I have seen, the backlash is mostly against people who start to act as if their headcanon is actually canon or keep trying to press it on others who don't have that headcanon...which is irritating as hell no matter what the headcanon is about.

But like I said, I haven't seen much of this at all, so maybe someone who's seen more of these things can tell me. Have people been lashing out at the trans headcanons themselves or people being assholes about their headcanons?

You "know how people are"? What do you even mean with that?

And way to make assumptions about the people that have backlash against the "X has to be trans* or you're a transphobe!" trend. Some of us are transgendered ourselves. Just because the trend makes YOU happy doesn't mean it makes all of us happy. I for one am sick of the transphobic and gender essentialist trans* headcanons people come up with and then claim everyone (including trans* people) are transphobic if they don't accept.

huh, I'm trans and I'm on the complete opposite side of the fence

I would rather the fandom types were entirely unaware of our existence rather than trot us out as quirky ~unique~ "progressive" headcanons, and I'm going to sideeye any non-trans person who parades trans headcanons around everywhere
