Re: Sentinal/Guide

(Anonymous) 2013-11-22 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's basically a premise taken from the TV show "The Sentinel" Which was pretty popular about ten to fifteen years back. The premise there was, that every tribe in ancient times, had a sentinel, a kind of watchmen, that developed superior senses to protect the tribe and sense danger before it appeared.

These sentinels also needed to be taught or calmed down and basically had a 'guide' attached to them that taught them how to use their oversensitive senses without going into overload and give them something to focus on. Guide and Sentinel therefore developped a bond, which may also have been spiritual.

As I haven't actually read this trope in any other fandoms, this may be kind of hit and miss. In the original the characters also had a 'spirit animal' (a jaguar for the sentinel and a wolf for the guide though this may just be for these particular characters as they are the only ones we get to see during the show)

In the show itself the sentinel also brought his guide back from the dead.

(Also, a recommendation for anybody who likes goofy 90s buddy cop shows with a twist and some unusually good cast diversity, also really slashy, almost not subtexty subtext there)

Re: The rules of American football

The object is to score more points than the opponents. The main way of scoring points is by running the ball into the zone at one end of the field - this is called a touchdown and it's worth 7 points. The game is divided up into a number of different plays. Each play begins with both sides lining up at a certain point. The side with the ball (the offense) snaps the ball and tries to move it forward, until they're either tackled, they lose the ball, they go out of bounds, or they score a touchdown. So the goal is to keep running these plays until you get in the endzone.

Now, the thing to keep in mind is that if you run 4 plays, and you don't advance the ball at least 10 yards over those 4 plays, you lose the ball for not being good enough. So what you have to do is you keep doing plays and hopefully getting enough yards to run more plays, until you get in the end zone and score. And the other side tries to stop you from moving forward. And it goes from there.

Re: What are dog daemons?

[personal profile] queerwolf 2013-11-22 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
They're from the book series His Dark Materials. Golden Compass is the first one and is a movie you may have heard of.

Basically each person has a physical animal or daemon that's always with them that represents their soul. These animals can talk to the person and they're seen by everyone. The constantly change form when the person is a child and finally "decide" on a permanent shape as an adult. The animal reflects the kind of person they are.

gah, I can't find a good picture of one, but what bugs me about those boobs even more than the balloonishness is that the nipples look like those orange end caps from Tinker Toys

Re: Self Publishing

(Anonymous) 2013-11-22 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I say, if you can make money off of it as well as build an audience, more power to the self publisher.

Self publishing these days isn't the same twenty years ago or ten years ago or even five years ago. These days, people don't care where a story comes from. A self published book is just as good as a big house publishing book once it is read on a tablet.

Pretty much this. Dogs are awesome, and they embody many traits that are valued in humans, such as the ones you listed.

Re: PLANET POSITIONS

(Anonymous) 2013-11-22 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm confused by this question. Are you asking why the planets all orbit in a single flat plane - like a plate or Saturn's rings - around the sun instead of from any random direction - like those drawings of electrons and protons orbiting an atom?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2013-11-22 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Look, believing in Heaven is kind of like believing in Santa Claus. It doesn't make a whole lot of logical sense, but it brings comfort and joy to people's lives, so as long as they aren't using this belief to justify things with terrible real-world effects, leave them alone about it.

(Yes, yes, Heaven is a lot harder to discredit than Santa Claus, I know. It is unobservable.)

Re: Self Publishing

(Anonymous) 2013-11-22 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly what you said. I do know writers who I suspect might have self-published without an objective editor, and if that's the case, then really it's too bad because I think what they wrote could've been so much better. But it can also be done as a means to avoid the politics that can be present in publishing, or as you said, get a head start (though I'm not sure if the self publishing would hurt credibility later on).

Re: PLANET POSITIONS

(Anonymous) 2013-11-22 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Because the point of that particular chart was to show the order they go in, or perhaps their relative sizes. This is just my guess. I'd have to see what you were actually talking about, because I have seen several diagrams that show the planets in different points in their rotation.

Re: Self Publishing

(Anonymous) 2013-11-22 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's "cheating" at all. That's kind of ridiculous and sounds like someone with some jealousy going on. Self publishing has come a long way and I think it's a pretty legit way to go for some genres or authors.

And yeah, the quality varies, but just because some people self publish shit books doesn't mean all self published books are shit.

Yes! I felt the same way about the office though, I had to give each one about 8 episodes before I started enjoying them.

stole from the internet, I think this is hwhat you are talking about

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-11-22 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
The solar system formed from a spinning disc of space dust and gas. This gas and dust had enough gravity to hold it together in the first place, and then as mass started to collect near the center, it formed the Sun and started nuclear fusion. The Sun is rotating for the same reason that the planets orbit it - the original angular momentum of the dust disc remains in the Sun. As figure skaters spin faster and faster when they pull their arms closer to their bodies, so the Sun started spinning faster and faster as the material of the dust disc compressed smaller and smaller.

The same is true as to why the planets rotate. As bands of dust began to collect and form planets, they spun faster and faster as they collected the angular momentum of the particles of dust.

The planets are not all exactly on the same plane. The Earth's plane is known as the ecliptic, and the Moon and planets all stray off of it by varying amounts over the years when you look at them.

If you look at a 3-d graphic of the solar system (this one looks good, http://www.syix.com/elmer/Cool%20Stuff%202/Solar_System_Scope.htm ) from an "edge-on" perspective, you'll see that different planets' orbital planes are on different tilts, or "inclinations" to use the official term.

Planets like Uranus and Venus with peculiar rotations are thought to have been hit by other objects in their past, altering their rotation.

Aside from the excellent points about the personalities of dogs that have already been made, do you really think all soldiers and servants are likely to be personality clones? There are tons of them; there's bound to be a ton of personality variation among them as well.
