I cannot shave under my arms because it creates painful bumps for days after. Also, I don't give a rat's round rump what you think about the amount of hair on my body. If I maintain great personal hygiene and smell like soap and happiness, the only way you'll ever know is if I lift my arms while wearing a cami. Or a bathing suit.

Anyway, the only people who've had any say in the amount of hair I do or don't have on my body haven't cared what I do, so long as I stay clean.

So far as other people go, I like a tamed, trimmed look. I don't find beauty in braided pit hair, it's not my thing. Doesn't matter which gender you are.

That reminds me of a story: One of the last times I went swimming, a couple young girls decided to barrage me with questions (do you have a boyfriend! is he your son! [refering to a kid about 15 behind me] where do you work! guess what our names are!). Anyway, I stretched my arms up and one of them gasped mid-word. "Oh my GOSH, you have HAIR!"
"Yes, of course, it's right here," I said, rubbing my head.
"No, THERE!" she pointed at my shoulder.
"Oh, yea. I do."
"You have to shave that."
"No, I don't, sweetheart."
"Well, you SHOULD. My mom does, and you should too!"
"Mm, your mom can do what she likes, and I choose not to shave under my arms. Someday, you can make the choice between them."
"But EVERYONE shaves!"

Sigh. End story time.

You probably scarred them for life.

/sarcasm /has similar policies in regards to body hair /finds the concept of children going up to random strangers a bit unsettling

Yes, the image of my stubbly pits is forever burned into their consciousness... eses...

I found it unsettling that they were firing questions at me having to do their information and my personal life. Even the bee sting redirect didn't work!

I like those stories. I always figure I'm doing good, informing little girls (and adults sometimes) that it's okay to be different and that options are out there.

I remember when I was 10 or 12 and this one camp counselor didn't shave and all the other girls made fun of her, but I was just fascinated. I didn't even know that was a thing I could choose to (not) do! Which seems silly, but it was just so mind blowing at the time. And it took me years to get comfortable with it, but now I don't ever shave and I love my body and I give a lot of the credit for that to that one camp counselor and all the other women out there rocking their body hair and showing me and the world that it's okay.

I love educating the masses, one by one. I like to think the thought will percolate and pop up again when they hit that age.

I had a similar experience with my counselors, and it included things like being totally ok wearing a tanktop with a perfect movie star figure. We get so sucked into what the media tells us, and don't realize it unless someone opens our eyes at a later age. Camp sure seems like a great place for learning you'll figure out, later!

Bummer

If it makes you feel better there were a bunch of school girls on my train, about 15 years or so, and only one of them had shaven legs. It wasn't mentioned, no-one seemed to give a shit. I only really noticed because of this thread. XD

I did hope that when they start shaving its through their own choice and not teasing/bullying.

Oh, it didn't bother me that much. Yea it kinda sucked they were being so judgmental at such a young age, but they'll grow out of it or they won't. (Hopefully they do, spending so much time and energy judging people you don't even know sounds tiring.)

At the same time, I knew I wasn't going to have a meaningful conversation about societal expectations based on media representations of the ideal woman with 9 y/os, so I didn't try. Just said it was my choice, and they'll chew on that over the next few years.

I think it was more shocking than the fact I didn't have a boyfriend ("You HAVE to have a boyfriend, everyone needs a boyfriend!" Emphasis theirs.). So many more opportunities in that little tidbit. -_-;
