Re: Holiday season is upon us

I hate this fucking season. I hate just about everything about it.

It's impossible to ruin Christmas, it comes pre-ruined. It's a holiday where you get terrible gifts that you're obliged to fake gratitude for while at the same time nobody ever actually appreciates the gifts you go to the trouble of buying with your limited funds, you're expected to make appearances at family/work/friend gatherings that nobody else really wants to go to except the overly-sentimental, everything is fucking closed for two days unless you like Chinese food (and even those places sometimes close nowadays too) there are exactly three things on TV: Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, and yule log video loops, and everyone turns into an asshole for a month before the holiday even starts.

But the season also has baked goods to eat, and sweaters to wear, and alcohol to drink, and Fairytale of New York (the best Christmas song). It's not all bad.

Baked goods make me fat(ter), I can wear sweaters any old time during the winter, I don't drink alcohol, and I'd love to never hear that song again.

So yeah, it is all bad.

I cede my grinch crown gracefully. :)

eta: because you made me realize that as much as I hate Christmas I am under no obligation to celebrate it or even pretend to tolerate it.

Wow. You need better friends if *no gift* you've ever gotten has ever been good. Or appreciated.

Re: Holiday season is upon us

[personal profile] dethtoll 2013-12-01 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, admittedly, that's hyperbole, but I do have a pattern of people opening my gifts and saying "oh this is great!" in as wooden a manner as possible and then chucking it aside to immediately forget about.

It's mostly my family, though. If I even get a gift, it's a gift card to something they know I don't fucking use, like iTunes or Bass Pro Shop or the fucking Jelly of the Month Club.

Heee.
Sorry. Jelly of the month club sounds kinda...fun.

But, yeah, it sucks when your family doesn't know enough or care enough to actually find you something you enjoy.

Or some people just have really fucking ignorant families?

Admittedly I am fucking LUCKY. Despite being thirty (and my brother being thirty-one), we still do the whole ~Christmas morning~ thing at my parent's house, complete with stockings and "presents from Santa", and since we exchange wishlists I've never gotten a gift that I looked at and went, "Oh... thanks."

And I KNOW I'm lucky. My best friend has a dickweed for a dad and her and her poor mum spend most of the day coddling his sensibilities while he gives no gifts but expects everything and generally acts like a petulant child.

It's different when you're a kid and you don't have to buy stuff for people. But as soon as you're expected to get gifts for others -- hell, as soon as you're expected to drive around, or go shopping, or do anything -- you start to realize just how shitty and ingrateful people really are. Fuck this season.

That stinks. Reminds me of "Grandma presents" though. My Grandmother on my Dad's side of the family always insisted on getting a list from all the grandkids. We could never figure out why because it was exceptionally rare for anyone to actually get anything off the list they had given her.

All the granddaughters also got the exact same set of garish red and pink lipsticks from Avon every year. I forgot what she used to get for the boys.

I hated it when she was alive, but I miss it now.

Don't blow your load before the kinkmeme is up. No one will remember to prompt dethtoll/hater!anon if you don't space it out a little.

I am so with you man. I hate everything Christmas, for all the same reasons you outlined.

and you can't escape it. It's in every commercial, it invades even the least christmasy TV program, it's visible everywhere you go. You can't even run your daily errands without having store ads screaming about you for being a terrible friend for not buying everyone this this this and this for christmas, even though you're all "but I'm just here to get toothpaste and some batteries!" And heaven forbid you should have to mail something or get some banking done.

and as for Starbucks, they can kiss my ass because the local drive-through coffee shop will put mint in my mocha any day of the year.

I'm so with you. I actually like actual-Christmas, but it's buried so deep under an avalanche of mindless commercialism and bad drivers and delayed postal service and horrible horrible fucking godawful music that by the time December 25 finally arrives I'm just like AT LAST, LET THIS TORTURED EXISTENCE END.

Re: Holiday season is upon us

(Anonymous) 2013-12-02 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
daaaamn, you pulled the short straw. sorry dude.

in defense of Christmas (lol), it is at least nominally a family holiday, so if your family is rife with ick that can ruin the season regardless of the holiday itself.

although it's gonna be overexposed no mater where you are. (fortunately, my hometown is full of rednecks and rocket scientists and neither goes in too much for Christmas brouhaha)

Re: Holiday season is upon us

(Anonymous) 2013-12-02 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think the main problem is your attitude, not the season or the gifts or the other people.

Thank you for that analysis Dr. Phil, but I think I'm allowed to be irritated by one holiday out of the year.

Can't help it. They're called family. :/

Oh I see. I'm not going to say that explains a lot, but... Well yeah.

Have you thought about blowing them off and spending time with other people?
