Tie-in Recommendations?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by the thread above. What are some of your favorite tie-ins, f!s?

Mine, all Star Trek:

How Much for Just the Planet?
The Wounded Sky
My Enemy, My Ally

All of the Warcraft novels by Christie Golden. Especially Arthas and Rise of the Horde.

Christie Golden is another good tie-in writer! I think it's a science of being able to accurately convey preexistant characters. (basically a good fanfic writer, lol) Her Voyager novels are my favourite.

Star Trek:
All Diane Duane's tie-ins (you mentioned Wounded Sky and MEMA...philosophically she gets a bit weird but her characterization is top notch)
Uhura's Song (the biggest published Mary Sue of all time, but fun fun worldbuilding!)
Ishmael (very distinct in setting and tone but dammit I love the OCS and how Spock is characterized)
Vulcan's Forge (at least I think that's the one that bounced between kid-Spock and adult Spock, and it's got great Spock/McCoy friendship stuff!)
Best Destiny (Carey's prose isn't my fave and this is a different characterization of young Kirk, but I really like the story)
Janus Gate Series (yesss give me all the time travel goodness!)

Star Wars:
Timothy Zahn's books
Aaron Allston's books
Jedi Apprentice Series
Junior Jedi Knights series

I'd second Zahn and Allston's books for Star Wars and also add in Stackpole's X-Wing series.

I think the Deus Ex Human Revolution book (The Icarus Effect) may just be my favourite tie-in. It's well-written, avoids being a direct adaptation of the game (it centers around completely different characters, some of them younger versions of their DX1 selves who didn't appear in DXHR), expands quite a bit on the backstory (and also has a lot more ties with the original Deus Ex, which DXHR sort of glossed over) and apparently has been made more legitimate by that new game The Fall being a sequel.

(Kind of wish The Fall would come to Android or PC, though...)

I haven't read many Star Trek novels but there was one called The Joy Machine that I really liked.

There's a Transformers tie-in comic miniseries from the movie continuity, it's called Sector Seven and it's supposedly all about how Sector Seven formed and their eatly history. But in reality, it's basically half "Bonnie and Clyde got help from a robot!!" and half "Jetfire constantly shows up to kick the shit out of things like the badass he is." Best comic ever.

Star Trek TOS

The Covenant of the Crown
Yesterday's Son
Tears of the Singers
Uhura's Song
Dweller's in the Crucible (this is actually a pretty bad book, but I love it)
Time for Yesterday
The Kobayashi Maru

Yay someone else who loves Uhura's Song! I think I would have been harsher on it had I first read it as an adult, but I've been reading it since I was wee and I love it completely.

And I really want a tail.

~You can't spoil stew with a tail-kinker or two~

and I just loved the focus on Uhura, and darling baby Chekov, and Kirk actually being comfortable and kind with a kid, and Spock...oh, Spock. And Dr. Awesome McSassypants! And the worldbuilding! And spears with knapped stone points, yes yes yes.

I really liked Dr. Awesome Sassypants too. That's just a damn fun book.

I tend to like most of the TOS Pocket Books tie ins, though. :)
