Harry Potter

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm getting into the series again but I've never read fic for it. I'm open to almost anything, but I want something long and plotty with lots of adventure as well as a good focus on friendship between the characters. Romance is alright as long as it isn't student/teacher romance and isn't the main focus of the plot. The romance can be m/m f/f or m/f, I don't care. No AUs please.

Aw man. Like, the one fandom I read a lot of fic for and your parameters count out most of my recs.

Sorry, I didn't think I was being too picky. Orz

not fingals, but same here... most of what I read for HP was romance, and a lot of it is AU because everything that was written got jossed with each new book, and even now there are people who choose to ignore the epilogue.

:( I'm sorry I wish I had something for you.

I'd like fics that take place in the canon universe for the most part. Some divergences from canon are fine. If the fic ignores the epilogue or a character's death, that is okay with me. I just don't want some generic highschool AU in a school with no magic or something along those lines. And if it makes it any easier, romance recs are fine. Just no student/teacher. Again, I'm sorry if I'm being too difficult.

In that case here is one where Ron is a spy and Draco has amnesia: http://archiveofourown.org/works/54799

Here is one by the same author but not in the same verse, about Ron and Draco and Blaise Zabini opening a pizza place together: http://archiveofourown.org/works/54847 (romance is subtextual only)

Here is some Dudley/Luna (warning for minor character suicide): http://dudley-redeemed.livejournal.com/39673.html

Here is one where Pansy and Ginny are teaching at Hogwarts and Pansy has to get married to get her inheritance, but she's gay, so she and Ginny fake a marriage: http://eloiselovelace.livejournal.com/9201.html

crack_broom on lj is my main source for HP fic

It's not that it's too picky, but a lot of the long plotty fics most people read are romance. I don't think the romance takes center stage in many of them, but it is an important component.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I understand. Admittedly, I read a lot of romance fics, but atm I've been craving something with worldbuilding and adventure. I'll take recs for those fics you mentioned.

Check back here tomorrow because I'm on my phone and it's difficult to gather all my links. (Also, most of these will be Snarry, post-Hogwarts.)

Long, plotty, and I don't recall there being much romance. Enjoy!

Omg, thank you. This fic sounds great!

I haven't kept up with it, but this fic was fairly interesting:

http://archiveofourown.org/works/838184/chapters/1597046

The Horcrux in Harry's head wakes up and begins talking to Harry long before he's ever heard the name Voldemort. Philosopher's Stone AU.

Also this one does have a focus on friendship and has a very canon-y feel to it! (also, complete!)

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9125864/1/This-Bag-of-Stones

also this one seems kind of abandoned, but it was pretty big on friendship

My favourite series is the 'Resonance' series by GreenGecko on fanfiction.net. They are EXTREMELY long and plotty, going AU after I believe the 5th book, include Mentor!Snape in the most believable way possible and without woobifying him, lots of worldbuilding, and minimal romance. Highly recommended.

Oh, this sounds right up my alley. Thank you for the rec.

It's really long, but it's worth it.

Try phoenixsong.net and sugarquill.net - those generally have the sorts of fics I think you're looking for, though SugarQuill has been defunct as a site for years, so a lot of the better fics were written before the last book. They're also only canon pairings. There's also a genfic fest, hp_holidaygen, that's actually posting fics right now.

It's not that you're being picky - it's more that the fandom is spread out, even now when it's so much quieter.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for these sites! I didn't even think of checking out lj for gen Harry Potter comms.

I suppose that is true, but after rereading my posts, I think I came across as a bit picky. Probably could have worded it better too. Since the Harry Potter fandom was so huge and is still fairly big, I thought that maybe there would be a decent amount of plotty, long genfic.

Re: Harry Potter

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well, then I'm picky too because those are exactly my qualifications, and it's embarrassing how long I've been in the HP fandom. :P

Re: Harry Potter

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Knowing that I'm not alone with these qualifications makes me feel better about my request.

Oh, how I wish that I could have gotten into this years ago, back in the early 00's. I didn't gave internet back then though and by the time I did, I had lost interest in the series. How long have you been ibn the fandom?

Re: Harry Potter

(Anonymous) 2013-12-06 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Since 2000. I was in it pretty much right as it was starting to get big.

The Pure and Simple Truth, perhaps? It has some Draco/Harry, but it's primarily gen. Long, too. I wouldn't say it has a lot of adventure though—it's very character-driven. But if that doesn't bother you, it's definitely worth a look.

Re: Harry Potter

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
That works! Character-driven fics are welcome too. Thanks for the rec.

ARGH I CAN'T FIND ANY OF MY BOOKMARKS

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-12-05 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just failing at reccing, sorry. I can't find any of my old saves. Since you've never read any fic, I'd say take a look at painless_j's recs. She stopped reccing back in '08, I think, but there's some good old school stuff there and it's well organized. When I first get into a fandom I love to look at rec lists, so I hope this helps.

'Getting The Hang of Thursdays' (http://www.obscurusbooks.org/html/Hayseed/Thursdays/) is probably my favorite fic, I think, just because I like time loops. It's got a tiny, tiny bit of Snape/Hermione, but that's not what it's about, nor is a romance.

Don't worry about it. Thank you so much for the info and rec!
