would this be gross?

[personal profile] shinyhappypanic 2013-12-05 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
so I live in a dorm with no kitchen anywhere near me. I really want to make some hot chocolate but I don't have a filter pitcher or anything. since I don't have any milk, the most easily available option to obtain water for my cocoa is to use tap water from the bathroom sink. would this be unsanitary/gross? I don't have a problem with tap water but I've never had to use bathroom tap water...

on the one hand I think it's icky, but on the other hand I figured if I boiled the water in the microwave, that cleans the water somehow, right?

lazy and conflicted, please offer your opinions!

Huh. Is bathroom tapwater different from kitchen tapwater? I mean, we bathe ourselves in it/wash our hands with it/brush our teeth with it, right? I think if the bathroom faucet is clean, it should be okay.

I have no idea! the only kitchen here is our dining hall, so I don't really know if it's the same. I guess so but I'm still scared haha.

Yep. It's all the same water. Not a big deal.

It's the same water.

That's always been my view, anyway.

Bathroom tap water is just regular tap water. It's not like it passes through the toilet or anything!

I mean, people brush their teeth with it, so I'd say it's fit for consumption.

Unless the spout or faucet is really gross or something, I see no big with it. I often use our bathroom tap to fill up my water glass if the sink is otherwise in use.

the sinks themselves are usually fairly dirty in one way or another. I've never checked the faucets specifically..hm.

IDK.

I'm not sure whether the water from the bathroom tap would be filtered. I'd assume so... but I'd make sure, just in case.

Are there other people in the dorm who would be able to tell you? Maybe a landlord, someone who owns the building?

I don't think it's filtered because most girls have filter pitchers.

I use and drink bathroom tap water all the time. It's the same water.

I always thought there was a slight difference between the bathroom tap water and the kitchen tap water, but it might be the fixtures. I personally don't like my bathroom sink water so I only drink it if I'm desperate.

I feel the same way about the taste. I wonder if it's psychological because we associate it with the ickyness of bathrooms? or maybe that's just me lol.

It is the same water, it isn't dangerous*...

*as long as the tap water is clean in your area that is.

ooh...I actually have no idea about this! I go to school far away from my home state and came here without any prior knowledge of the area. I have noticed that most girls have pitchers with water filters in to keep in their fridges, but otherwise I dunno.

Not gross at all. The water from the bathroom sink isn't different from the water in the kitchen; the only thing different is the surroundings.

When I was in a certain dorm I had to actually do dishes in the bathroom sink. As long as you make sure it's clean, it's fine.

If people make fun of you, make fun of them right back.

I don't think it would be gross at all. You're boiling it. (I've never thought it was gross to use bathroom tap water for eating or drinking. After all, you brush your teeth with it, right? And I use it to take medicine.)

I think it's the same water as any water, so it should be fine.

it's the same water as in the kitchen

Re: would this be gross?

Yeah, no. The water coming from your bathroom sink is the same water that comes through your kitchen sink. Like someone else said, it doesn't reroute through a shitty toilet on the way there.

You brush your teeth with it, right? It's fine to drink.

I'm surprised there's no water fountain in your dorm, though, to fill water bottles and whatnot.

I somehow read "bathroom tap water" as "bathroom tape worm" and was seriously confused for a minute.

But yeah, like everyone else is saying, it's the same water so it should be fine.

I'm actually pretty curious as to who told you it would be gross in the first place. Like...did your parents tell there's completely different tap water in the kitchen and bathroom or something? Why?

Re: would this be gross?

I feel really bad for saying this, but this is kind of adorable. Also: not an actual problem. I lived in a dorm for 4 years and have spent many months over the years living out of motels for work and it has never once occurred to me not to drink water from the bathroom faucet (and on some occasions, the bathtub faucet when my water bottle wouldn't fit under the tap over the sink). The only problem is when hotels soften their water, because I hate how that tastes and have to go buy bottled water.

Anyway, city tap water is city tap water. If there is a dining hall kitchen or a drinking fountain in your dorm, it has the same water as what is coming out of the pipes in your bathroom.

Do you have one of those Brita pitchers with a built-in filter? I got all my drinking water from the bathroom tap in college. If I needed tea I boiled the filtered water. Those pitchers are pretty cheap iirc.
