Mulan would have been so much better if it didn't have the wiseass dragon.

But that's Eddie Murphy you're talking about!

Eddie Murphy!

Well, I liked the dragon, anyway.

Yeah, it seems like a lot of people agree on that, so actually yeah, people do complain about the other mandatory obnoxious characters...

Aww, I like Mushu if only for the fact that it's one of Eddie Murphy's last shining stars before his never-ending slew of poor comedy life choices.

That was about his only funny line in the whole movie.

I love Mushu. He was funny. I thought him and Mulan made a good pair.

*Mulan wouldn't have had a plot if it didn't have the wiseass dragon.

I'm pretty sure the talking dragon wasn't in the original legend.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because Disney movies are all about the realism.

Point is, the dragon wasn't needed for the story, because the original legend didn't have him. Learn2read etc. etc.

Look, I see why a lot of people say Mushu is annoying and everything, but the thing is he is a) important to the plot (as in makes sure Mulan does go sucessfully undercover as a man) and he has b) his very own emotional storyarc (that somehow mirrors Mulan's and therefore contributes to hers to).

What I am trying to say here, is that while annoying to some people he does fill a purpose in the movie beyond comic relief. And I think, a lot of the time a problem with annoying sidekicks is, that they don't.

(I haven't seen Frozen though, so I can't comment on the role of the snowman.)

Except Olaf WAS important to the plot. He was kind of an obvious plot device. Which is good, because for teh younger kids who may not ave gotten some of the more complicated aspects of the film, he was kind of straight forward "hi!! i resentment the happy childhood and hey!! people who you love are worth melting for!! huh huh? get it? love? melting?"

Besides, I thought he was way more toned down than Maximus was (as much as i liked that horse) and Louis from PatF. I found Louis VERY annoying. And he was NO WHERE NEAR as all over the place as the gargoyles from Hunchback.

It's very subjective for each and every person, but to me, he was one of the more tame Disney sidekicks.
