Mulan would have been so much better if it didn't have the wiseass dragon.

The snowman was just annoying. I had no problem with the sidekicks from Tangled so it has nothing to do with me being an old fart.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, Meeko and Abu weren't talking animals. And Sebastian and Mushu were badass. The snowman looks pretty annoying to me, but I agree that it's a poor reason to refuse to see the movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
While they're adorable, I'm not too keen on prominent mascot characters unless they serve a purpose.

I was expecting Olaf to be really annoying, but he was honestly one of my favorite parts. It helped that they knew when to shoo him out for the serious scenes. I found him adorable.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate Mushu and Abu. Also the stupid mice in Cinderella and Timon and Pumbaa. I happily bitch about them, so eat me, OP.

I ain't seeing this piece of shit film entirely because of the snowman. It's probably only as annoying as the other irritating talking animals in Disney movies, but the character design is also so fucking butt ugly and out of style with the rest that it's just painful to look at.

And, for the record, I hated these types of characters when I was a kid. If a kid can tell that they're having their intelligence insulted by the ridiculous notion that, to be entertaining to a particular age group, a film has to have a mood-killing comic relief bullshit animal character in there, it says a lot.

I'm fifty and I fucking loved the snowman, he was awesome. And my husband actually liked this movie more than I did.

But, you know, I'd go see Disney movies even if I didn't have the excuse of my kid, because fuck "growing out of them." The animal sidekicks are a feature, not a bug.

:p

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
true. there's this big entitlement for kid's movie- I get when we want to include more diversity, good morales and role models etc, that's how you raise them as well. but stuff like being annoying? or that one scene where her braid went through her arm and shit?
why the fuck are you watching this movie three times to critisize it in minute details.

Meh, the snowman is just one among many reasons I'm not rushing to watch the movie. Not a dealbreaker, though.

Yes, how dare people choose not to see a movie that has content that will annoy them! You'd almost think that people's recreation time and money was limited and they wanted to restrict their use of it to things that they will enjoy!

You also seem to be laboring under the misapprehension that all "talking animal characters" are created equal. You don't see people complaining about Meeko and Abu being annoying, because they don't annoy most people. They are not obnoxious, overbearing characters with stupidly "funny" voices and ridiculous-looking character designs. On the other hand, I hate, detest, abhor, despise, and revile the gargoyles from HoND. They bother me. (Djali the goat, however, does not -- because not obnoxious.) By acting like all "talking animal characters" are the same in terms of annoyance potential, you're essentially asking why people are annoyed by Jar Jar Binks while saying they like Chewbacca, and claiming that nostalgia goggles for the original trilogy is the only difference.

Wait...Disney movies are for kids? D:

[personal profile] writerserenyty 2013-12-08 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen Frozen yet so I can't comment on that, but IMO the best kids movies are the ones that are actually more accurately family movies, in that kids AND adults can love them together. My favorite movie as a kid was Beauty and the Beast, and it's something I can watch as an adult and appreciate. I love Tangled dearly and watch it regularly, even as an adult. I was kind of a precocious kid when it came to media, and I hated movies/tv talking down to me more than anything. Talking animals aren't necessarily a bad thing, but I wasn't a fan of things that were clearly made to try and appeal JUST for kids.

I have no idea how the snowman really fits into the film because I haven't seen it yet (but I do plan to, eventually), but I don't think kids movies are and should be JUST for kids.

Olaf was okay, but I kept wondering if they based him on Jerry Lewis's caricature of himself. TBH, I dislike Jerry Lewis comedies.

It was the songs that made me want to walk out. I got sick of them pretty quick. It seemed like there were a lot more songs than normal, as if Frozen was a Disney musical than a Disney fairy tale.

Seriously?

minor dialogue spoilers(?)

[personal profile] othellia 2013-12-08 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on the animal character for me. I went in dreading Olaf, but I actually rather liked him. He had this sort of undercurrent of existential dread that was rather unique for me in a Disney character. Like yes, there's Eeyore, the resident depressed donkey, but Olaf was totally chipper about his inevitable, unknowing doom.

The line "...oh, I've been impaled" was perhaps my favorite line in the whole film.

When I went to see Frozen with friends last weekend, I was kind of ambivalent about the idea of Olaf. He looked annoying in the promos and, like a previous commenter noted, out of place with the rest of the characters.

But when I actually saw the movie and the reason for his presence and the way he looked was revealed...It made a lot more sense.

And his dialogue is cute, even if he looks like an utter doof.

Secret 3 - Talking animal sidekicks in children's movies

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the animated snowman from the CGI film "Frozen". It is excitedly smiling down at a purple flower in the middle of a snow-y place, surrounded by trees.]

I think people whining non-stop and refusing to see the movie because of this snowman are overreacting and being childish. IT'S A KID'S MOVIE. It's for them to enjoy, not you.

Of course those talking animal characters can be irritating. You don't have to like them. I don't like some of them either. But they're there for the kids that do like them. I absolutely LOVED Meeko when I was little and I still have a Meeko toy that I got when I was 3 or 4. If I'd seen Pocahontas for the first time as an adult I probably wouldn't have liked him much. But I'm still glad he was there because he made child me happy.

Funny how I've never heard anyone bitch about Sebastian, Abu, Mushu - or any of the others from any of the Disney Renaissance movies. Oh, right, because they are the ones most of the complainers enjoyed as children so they're off limits to criticism.

I think the talking sidekick thing can be bad, but I think Olaf was handled just fine. He wasn't in it too much and the filmmakers knew when to dial it back with him.

No comments on Frozen since I've not seen it yet, but I think I like most of the Disney side-kicks, even the newer ones like in Tangled(which are the ones I've seen the most dislike for). The ones that come to mind that I'm not so keen on are the Gargoyles from the Hunchback of Notre Dame, but that's more because the tone of the film shifts away from the darker aspects of the movie and as a adult I find it a bit jarring(but they are there for kids so I don't really mind that much).

Depends on medium

Actually, I think a lot of folks are miffed more about the mis-leading marketing for this film than about Olaf existing. I'm in the UK and I've only seen ONE poster about with Anna in it, nothing featuring Elsa and SEVERAL featuring just Olaf.

I've heard that Frozen is actually really good and that Olaf has a small, amusing part but damn- you'd NEVER know this from the marketing. It's just all Olaf, all the time.

Yeah, I just hate his utterly obnoxious design. The nonhuman sidekicks in Disney's past were all exaggerated, but they they weren't outright lopsided. It makes him stand out in the film like a broken thumb pointing in the wrong direction. I'm kind of an animation snob that way and have been since I was a little tyke, please god you spend all that money and effort you refuse to make this character fucking symmetrical, ugh.

Pocahontas predates Mulan, though. If people are giving the other three films an easier time on sidekick characters because 'those are the ones they enjoyed as children', then they were children for Pocahontas as well.

...Unless your argument is that most children of the time didn't enjoy Pocahontas.
