Re: Things you can't enjoy anymore because they're problematic

Definitely the Mercy Thompson urban fantasy series. I adored the first two books despite the niggling issues I noticed from the start, but after the third book, I was conflicted, after the fourth, I was horrified, and after I found a detailed criticism of the series that broke down everything I'd tried to ignore from the start, I was completely fucking done. I can't even pick up the first two I liked so much again. I consider myself lucky I can enjoy the author's writing in unassociated universes.

Would you mind linking to that detailed criticism? There are parts of the series that are very problematic. But there are other parts I found progressive and refreshing. It kind of balanced out for me. I want to be sure I'm not missing something.

Here you go: http://yourekilling.us/?p=164

They've got reviews running through book six, and while each one presents some positives, there's a lot of negatives that I missed the first time around that, in retrospect, seem glaring. (It's also a great blog focused on reviewing a ton of urban fantasy and YA with a feminist - but not SJW - perspective.)

I actually had many more problems with her Alpha and Omega verse than the Mercy Thompson verse. I'll have to read that criticism and see what I've missed.

I've got my issues with those books, too, but by the time I read them, I was already on my way to being disillusioned with the entire 'verse, so their problems were less dismaying. Although it did solidify my tooth-grinding hatred for Bran.

Ah, for me, I already had some problems with the verse but they weren't deal breaking, but then I got into that one and it made it like 10x worse and I couldn't deal with it. Even after reading the critiques, I think the Mercy Thompson series will likely remain in my "problematic but still enjoy it overall" pile of things I read/watch. But it was an interesting read, thanks. :)
