Things you can't enjoy anymore because they're problematic

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Every once in a while we have a thread about things we still love even though they're problematic, and I have a lot. But there are also some things I found out I couldn't stomach when I revisited them. What are some of yours? Not things you reluctantly gave up for social justice, but things that you're just not able to enjoy anymore even if you wish you could?

I watched the first ep again recently and the weird queer baiting threw me off it real quick. I'm just so fucking over queer baiting that I don't even have words for how much it irritates me.

I'm like this for half of Sherlock and all of River Song's plotline in Doctor Who. The similarities between Moffat's Irene Adler and River Song are incredible, and I can't stand either of them.

Hasn't happened yet.

But I've definitely found stuff that sucks after rewatching it.

It was never a favorite, but I just can't handle Dear Enemy anymore. (It was written in the '20s, when eugenics were trendy.)

Nothin'. Really, can't think of anything.

I know there are definitely things but I'm drawing a complete blank at the moment. Hm.

Old Britcoms, the general homophobia, transphobia and occasional brownface just do a number on my ability to watch all that old stuff. Then again, I hear it isn't just confined to old Britcoms if the buzz around something called Mrs Brown's Boys" or "Little Britain" is anything to go by.

I haven't noticed the Basement Warriors "problems" with Sherlock or Doctor Who though.

Elementary's ableism and humor derived from mental health jokes are just not funny anymore. I get I'm supposed to see it as superior to Sherlock, but all I see are the same innuendos that come out of Big Bang Theory, only without any intended in-group humor.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I only watched a few episodes, years ago), but wasn't Little Britain supposed to be so-awful-it's-funny? R-rated Monty Python or something like that?

I don't watch Elementary but all I seem to see about the show is praising it for it's inclusiveness and excellent diverse cast writing blah blah blah. Are there a lot of ableism and the like jokes peppered throughout? Has Tumblr been lying to me all this time? *gasp*

Wait, what? Do you have an example? I'm not saying I doubt you, I just can't remember any off the top of my head and my google-fu has failed me.

I don't know about the material itself being problematic, but I really really can't listen to Megadeth anymore, thank you so much Dave Mustaine you crazy fucking neocon. I don't know what happened to him.

Doctor Who. It's gotten to the point where even some things I like about the show have been driven into the ground with such problematic twists to it that I have a hard time re-watching the stuff that's actually just fine.

Hey BRTTWW *waves for attention*

Teen Wolf and Glee are the most recent shows that I got fed up with, but I'm sure there have been other things.

Supernatural. I've just read too much meta and criticism of it at this point.

There isn't anything but that's probably because I don't care about "problematic" and roll my eyes at anyone who uses the term. Don't like something, don't watch. If it doesn't conform to your ideals for what media should be, don't watch it. When you do and you whine about such and such being problematic and the ~ism in this or that, you're just pissing on the actual fans who want to talk about what they enjoyed. Almost like if they were a fandom or something...

you are silly

Definitely the Mercy Thompson urban fantasy series. I adored the first two books despite the niggling issues I noticed from the start, but after the third book, I was conflicted, after the fourth, I was horrified, and after I found a detailed criticism of the series that broke down everything I'd tried to ignore from the start, I was completely fucking done. I can't even pick up the first two I liked so much again. I consider myself lucky I can enjoy the author's writing in unassociated universes.

Nothing. I don't stop watching something just because sjws think I should. But then again I also don't weep uncontrollably and hate myself just because I'm white either.

H. P. Lovecraft. Once I saw all the Yellow/Jewish Menace stereotypes behind his lush descriptions in Kadath, I couldn't unsee them.

Way too late, I finally quit Glee. The biphobic jokes they dumped on Demi Lovato were the last straw.

Do childhood things that handled social issues count? Because I loved The Baby-Sitter's Club as a kid, but when I remember how Ann M Martin dealt with certain things, such as disabilities and racism... it kind of dampens the prospect of handing them down to kids in my family. :/ And I feel like that's true for a lot of childhood/teenage favorites, because they do seem to handle the tough stuff really terribly.

Coupling. I thought it was making fun of the "women are like this, men are like that" kind of comedy. It's not.

Brekke and F'nor from Pern. I completely missed the rape when I was a kid, and I thought they had the best relationship. They were one of my favorite couples in the book. I thought F'nor sounded like the greatest guy and I identified a lot with Brekke. It was such a downer when the rape was first pointed out to me. I still get a little depressed everytime I think about it (and angry because it seems so OOC for F'nor even now).

Pern in general has a lot of problems that all few past me when I was a kid but the only one that really has sapped my enjoyment is Brekke and F'nor. I just want to un-see this and go back to when I didn't realize she was actually saying no. :(

Doug

I rewatched some episodes a while back and...ugh.

My childhood is shattered. But as for problematic? Nothing. If I enjoy it, I enjoy it, regardless of problematic things.
